Now that we know a lot more about the Xbox One, there are certain realities that are setting in for the future of sports games. Without a doubt, there are aspects of the new system worth getting excited about. It'll be awesome to be able to switch between tasks quickly, and the speedy system boot-up and resume features will mean that players will be able to get in and out of games that much faster. I think it's awesome for ... Read More

With Microsoft officially unveiling its new Xbox One console today, we can finally start gearing up for both of the new systems. Even the industry at large seemed ready, as developers have already started letting the press releases fly now that they are free to talk about the existence of both the PS4 and Xbox One. Surprisingly, EA Sports, and sports content in general, played a big part in the reveal of the new system. ... Read More

EA has released a new trailer for NHL 14, and it previews the new one-touch dekes that will be available in this year's game as well as the revised "True Performance Skating" features. These features had been talked about a little before now, but this video provides a first glimpse into what they will actually look like.

As is the norm with most EA sizzle videos from the developers these days, they start by ... Read More

For hockey games, there are plenty of features that are introduced, iterated and improved on for each release, but one small detail that often gets overlooked is the referees. In some ways, the aesthetic implementation of refs and linesmen is of minimal concern, as the developers have bigger fish to fry in terms of gameplay systems and new modes. However, I think whole concept of referees and linesmen in hockey games needs ... Read More

In the deluge of financial information that EA revealed this week, it was noted that there won't be a UFC product until after March of 2014. I'd say this is a bit of surprise, as EA's fighting products have been lurking in the shadows for a while now. This means that the earliest we're likely to see a UFC product from EA is the summer of 2014, but it is conceivable that it could be pushed to the fall. Still, the spring/summer seems ... Read More

With EA releasing a new trailer today that demonstrates some of the new collision physics hitting and player impact, it's easier to get a sense of what they have in mind for this feature. Since the act of hitting has been moved exclusively to the left thumbstick, there seems to be a simplification of the process, where now users can just aim their skater without worrying about timing the right stick to lift the player's arms ... The Stanley Cup playoffs get going tonight, with Minnesota vs. Chicago, Los Angeles vs. St. Lous, and Detroit vs. Anaheim. It'll be an all-west night of action, and I think LA and St. Louis might end up being the most compelling game tonight.

Officially, these are my picks for the playoffs:

- Chicago defeats Minnesota in 6 games
- Anaheim defeats Detroit in 7 ... Read More

After posting our article with David Littman talking about NHL 14, several OS users (as well as posters on reddit) were rightfully concerned about the impact of simplified deking. In addition, there is probably reason to be wary of the new hitting system, which does sound like it will have more impact but with less skill required to actually initiate a hit. All of these changes are being touted as new features as well as improvements ... Read More

Since the UFC seems to be experimenting with their "Ultimate Fighter" television show with each new iteration, I wonder if it might be worth experimenting with it in the gaming world. The career modes in most of the recent UFC games from THQ have been pretty stale, with the same basic calendar and training management that doesn't really factor in a lot of the emotion of working your way into and through the UFC.

EA has announced some of the new features for NHL 14 on their website, and you can also find a new trailer on that page as well. As usual, the development team has focused on five or six items that they want to improve for the new version, and they provided some context for each change.

With 2K announcing that The Rock will be on the cover of WWE 14, it got me thinking about the role of covers in the sports game business. Obviously, there is some fan interaction and input by having cover votes and the like, but in this day and age of sports, can one person really embody all that is good and desirable about the sport?

With the WWE choosing The Rock as their cover athlete, it sends a ... Read More

After reading about Ring Kings, a project boxing management sim that is looking for funding on Kickstarter (interview with devs forthcoming), it got me thinking about indie games and how the fighting game space can leverage crowd-sourcing to fill the gaps left by the current crop of AAA products.

Ring Kings looks to fill the gap left by the Fight Night series by providing a deep simulation management ... Read More

With the NHL 13 rosters looking to be heavily re-jigged thanks to the impending trade deadline, it's always fun to think about all of the time, effort, money and talent that gets thrown around in early April during the NHL season. GMs like to think they can win over fans with some last ditch effort to show that their franchise is "trying" to get over the hump and become a contender. Then you have other ... Read More

While playing NHL '94 recently (to pay tribute to its 20th anniversary), I was reminded how that was the one year where EA removed fighting from the game. Some of the decisions that year were at the behest of the NHL, including the removal of blood on injuries, but it's interesting to note that version of EA's product is remembered more fondly than any NHL game of the '90s. With that in mind, it begs the question: do hockey games still need to include fighting at all?

Kind of interesting to see 2K get cracking on the WWE license right away, but not in the way you might think. Since they scooped up the license from THQ, they've clearly been anxious to cash in on the love that WWE '13 has received, especially since they announced WWE '14 almost immediately, which shows that a product probably didn't even exist other than on ...
