While Ken Burns is known for his various works on war-time America and other pockets of U.S. history, one of his lesser-known but equally impressive works is Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. It aired as a two-parter on PBS almost a decade ago, and it's available in various formats, including through Netflix. In fact, someone still has the whole thing on youtube (Part I is here, and Part II is here.)

Hey, hey --

The NHL season for 2013 is chugging along, and it seems like teams are slowly shaking off the rust (and the summer hamburgers) and getting back into game form.

Just checking in with some Tuesday links for NHL and the hockey world in general.

Deals on NHL 13, etc.

The NHL 13 roster update just dropped, and there have been a good deal of changes to mull over. The new blood for this shortened season has been shuffled onto their NHL rosters, and below is a breakdown of who is on which team as well as their overall ratings. A few of these guys have been on and off these teams before, but a good portion of these guys have been down in the minors until now.

As usual, these ratings ... Read More

With 2K seemingly having procured the rights to make WWE games from here on out, it's safe to wonder what this will mean for the philosophy and feature set of these new products. It seemed until recently that EA was commonly thought of as the de facto choice for the vacant WWE license, but you have to wonder if they didn't push that hard given that they already have two fighting games under their purview (Fight Night and UFC).

Just checking in with some Friday links for you folks, covering some news for NHL 13 as well as the the full spread of the fighting world. Check 'em out below.

NHL 13

* ESPN and EA finished their season simulation (while the lockout was underway), and there were some surprising results. I thought the Stanley Cup winner was interesting, considering what I had mentioned about this last week. Check out the full breakdown here.

As hockey fans gear up for the strange 48-game season that's about to take place, GMs and coaches are scrambling to piece together line-ups from the slew of injuries, buyouts, reassignments, waiver claims and trades. When EA updates their rosters at the start of this new "season," several teams are going to look a lot different than they did just a few months ago.

Honestly, every team has ... Read More

The main event for this weekend's UFC card will feature a pivotal middleweight bout, as Michael “The Count” Bisping will try and get past the constant striking threat of Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort. Belfort is certainly the favorite on the feet, and he has excellent BJJ. Bisping will need to use his usual mix of cardio, clinch work and solid jabs to elude Belfort and survive the first two rounds so that he can tire Belfort out. Either way, it's a compelling match-up.

All this said, ... Read More

While NHL 13 provided a stellar hockey product, it still had a few issues that I think could be addressed in NHL 14. I was glad to see that "True Performance Skating" made such a difference, but hey, I'm still expecting great things in the next product.

These are the three things I would focus on:

1) Overhaul the Defensive Controls

We've definitely had total control given to shooting ... Read More

Just checking in with a few links and details from around the web for NHL 13.

EA/ESPN continues their simulation of the missed season with week 14. Crazy seeing Washington and Vancouver atop the standings, as well as Phoenix doing so well and Pittsburgh stinking out the joint.

I'll definitely be talking about this topic with more detail in the future, but it recently just jumped out at me how the big three fighting franchises are really in a state of limbo at this point.

With THQ's financial state very much on the brink, it seems even more likely that many of their assets will be sold off. Of course, they already pre-emptively sold the UFC licence to EA, but that title ... Read More

For the real world and the gaming world, there's a great deal of uncertainty about where certain players will fall now that the NHL lockout has ended. Lots of players are shuffling in from around the world (Switzerland, Sweden, KHL), although some players, like "magic hands" Kyle Wellwood, are probably trying to shed a few pounds about now.

Still, the option that teams now have ... Read More

Olympic videogames are kind of an odd breed, as they usually have to serve many masters. To start with, they're usually made for multiple consoles, nerfing the overall quality of the presentation and horsepower behind the game. Additionally, they feature tons of events, meaning the game usually ends up being a jack of all trades and a master of none when it comes to fun factor in said events. Finally, the games are usually handled by developers that are, charitably, not at the head of the class. ... Read More

It's kind of baffling to me why MLB: The Show has always struggled in the area of online play. For such a standout franchise, it seems almost inconceivable that the developers at SCE San Diego can't get this last piece of the baseball puzzle right. There's no question that the gameplay is fantastic in the series, and the audio/visual presentation is always extremely good. The online space actually has some pretty good features (on ...
