When it comes to the car-collecting and car-upgrading games, you really only have two main players: Forza and Gran Turismo. So as a long-time racing fan, it was with great excitement that I cracked open the case of Forza Motorsport 3. The question is are you ready for Forza 3?

I’m not exaggerating when I say that Forza could be the biggest, most ambitious car-collecting game ever created -- I use my words carefully here. And Forza 3 is, without a doubt, first and foremost a garage-expanding, car-collecting beast of a game. The racing comes secondary, but if you’re looking forward to your next Forza fix, you already know this.

I have logged 123 races in my time allotted for review; I have 30 cars in the garage after various career rewards and purchases; I have driven over 600 miles in classes F all the way through R -- and I am only 6.2 percent of the way through the career mode at level 24.

It’s that big.

Codemasters is a company that has been experiencing a methodical transformation over the past few years. In a time long past (all of three years ago), the company was releasing some of the most realistic and hardcore simulations on consoles.

Dirt 2 takes what made Dirt successful and improves upon it in almost every way. However, some of the omissions that were made to strip down some of the events that were potentially too long or dull for the casual racing fan may put off a true rally fan.

Xbox gamers haven’t had a hard time uncovering decent motorcycle racing games over the past few years. The MotoGP series was one of the first to grace the fledgling Xbox Live service, and it provided me with many hours of fun online competition.

As subsequent releases came down the pipeline, less about the titles felt fresh and new to me. Each new version of MotoGP felt familiar, and I found myself losing interest earlier than expected. Couple that with the fact that THQ changed the developers of the MotoGP series, which some would say affected the quality level, and you have the perfect time for Superbike World Championship (SBK) to move in and challenge for a spot in the marketplace.

The original Skate burst onto the scene in 2007. In one amazing effort, EA’s Black Box development studio introduced intuitive dual-analog controls that became second nature within minutes, and sent the long-running Tony Hawk series into an extended hiatus.

There were high expectations for Skate 2, and for the most part, it has lived up to those expectations. There are some head-scratching design decisions that were included in the sequel, but overall, Skate 2 is the new standard all future skateboarding games will be compared to.

Have you ever started playing a game that you really did not expect much from, and then found yourself completely captivated by it? Stranger still, when you really ask yourself WHY you like it so much, you cannot seem to put your finger on exactly what makes it so great to you?

That’s the scenario I find myself in with Baja: Edge of Control.

I was not expecting to like it. I had heard the word of mouth on the Internet and from friends that it was mediocre at best. Even through the first hour or so, I was prepared to plod through a game that I was not particularly enthused about.

A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed Midnight Club Los Angeles on the Xbox 360. Since the game was released on virtually every platform, I was also tasked with taking a look at the PSP version. I was curious how a game like Midnight Club LA would translate to the small screen of the PSP, and I wanted to see if it could maintain the sense of speed of its big brother without taking a huge frame rate hit -- like DUB Edition did.

The results are both good and bad. LA Remix does indeed move quickly and look good, and the frame rate doesn’t tend to sink into the toilet during a race. The game even includes the same vehicle roster and fairly well-rendered vehicle models that were in the 360 version. However, the differences between the PSP and 360 versions start to appear when you actually get on the road and progress a little through the game.

A lot of street-racing games seem to be going the "open world" route lately. You have Test Drive Unlimited available, where you can tool around a realistic Hawaii location for hours on end. You have other titles like Burnout Paradise, where you can fly around an open city and lay waste to rush hour traffic. The "original" street racing game, Need For Speed, has seen numerous changes over the years, but Need for Speed Underground 2 is still one of my favorite racers.

Now, into this already crowded genre comes Midnight Club Los Angeles. The question is whether there’s enough here that’s different enough to keep you playing it. The answer will vary, depending on your tastes.

We have posted our first impressions of MotoGP 08.

Quote:
"I certainly wasn’t expecting much going into my first sit-down with MotoGP 08 last night. THQ no longer had the reins in the series, and Capcom had taken over as the developer of the only MotoGP title on the market. After a long string of fun races in the THQ titles, the little I knew about the Capcom product on PS2 was that it was generally considered less than stellar."

With MotoGP 08 hitting store shelves tomorrow, resident racing expert Terry Crouch has penned an article called Tips for New Motorbike Riders.

Quote:
"The first thing to come to grips with is the fact that in most current motorcycle sims, the rider and the bike are modeled independently, which leads many newer players to feel a slight disconnect. When you come up to a corner in a car, for example, you simply turn the wheel and your car goes around the corner, simple enough."

"Pure is the latest ATV entry on the 360, and it comes from Black Rock Studio and Disney Interactive. The game revolves around stringing together long sequences of tricks and catching a massive amount of completely over-the-top air in some seriously gorgeous environments."

In a quick break from the NBA 2K9 coverage, Terry Crouch checks in this morning with a look at how to become a better online racer by using good etiquette and a sensible approach to racing. Check out his thoughts in his article, Becoming a Better Online Racer.

Quote:
"Online racing is a complicated mess of unwritten rules and gentlemen’s agreements. There’s no other way to say it. If you race online, you may or may not already know this.

If you don’t, hopefully this article will help you become a better racer, and make the other drivers around you want to race with you more."

We have posted our review of NFL Head Coach 09.

Quote:
"You don’t control the players. A football game where you don’t control the action on the field seems rather unconventional to most gamers, but there is actually a large market for players who would rather coach than play. While not quite on the same level as PC-based text simulations, NFLHC is deeper and more engrossing than any console sports simulation that has come before it. If you’ve ever wanted to look over depth charts, assess salary cap situations, develop young players, and find draft-day steals, Head Coach is for you."

We have posted what is the most comprehensive and in-depth review you will find on Madden NFL 09, written by OS veteran Terry Crouch. Check out his thoughts on the game and be sure to add your own by reading the Madden NFL 09 Review!

Quote:
"In terms of sports game sales in the United States, there is Madden, and then there is everything else. Every year a new version is released, and routinely it outsells practically everything else sports wise in America. Every year people debate the quality of Madden on Internet forums and around water coolers across the country. Madden is more than a game to many people, and the frenzied mobs that either condemn or curse the game annually are evidence to this. So when you’re asked to review Madden for Operation Sports, you can be assured of two things: that you’ll be told you are the biggest idiot on the planet for your opinion, and that Madden is "arcade" while NFL 2K is/was 'sim'."

Terry Crouch is back in The High Groove this week with a look at iRacing and its effect on sim-racing. Check out this weeks The High Groove to read his thoughts!

Quote:
"A lot of questions have swirled around iRacing since it was first announced several years ago. Dave Kaemmer, the lead designer behind many of Papyrus Racing’s finest titles (most notably Grand Prix Legends and NASCAR Racing 2003 Season) partnered with John Henry, who is the principal owner of the Boston Red Sox and Roush Fenway Racing, to create a new breed of racing simulation. The results are unprecedented in the world of sim-racing. The question is: is it so innovative and so far beyond its time that it’s tough to comprehend -- or has it just attained a level of arrogance that no other simulation has approached?"

Terry Crouch is back this week to save racing fans from the massive amount of NCAA Football 09 info we have bombarded our readers with. This week on The High Groove, Crouch looks at how racing games can take their online modes to the next level. Check out his article, League Racing Needs a Little Love.

Quote:
"What better way is there to compete against other people than league racing, which scores your performance in not only the race you’re in, but also other races across a defined schedule? This is the essence of league racing online, yet for some reason, it’s been completely ignored for years."
