One of the most underrated movies of the 90s. Very inventive mixture of several different genres. The sequence in the hospital at the end where he uses intercutting flashbacks that parallel the present action is absolutely brilliant.

Don't forget that Jackson already had Heavenly Creatures, for which he received an Oscar nomination. Also, he acquired the rights to LOTR, so he was choosing the studio, not the other way around.
