I would personally stay with the big boys and order from them vs. buy from Amazon or BestBuy.
Dell has alot of refurbished stuff.
I have bought desktops but will not buy a laptop from them.
If you go into the forums/reddit, many people return laptops because of heat issues (and some have tried putting special paste on them), unsatisfactory keyboards or, most important to me, unsatisfactory monitors.
There is a higher chance that refurbished laptops have something messed up.
For desktops, I don't really care if there is a dent in the case.
One more thing: your son may be able to get you some student discounts from major manufacturers.
