I've never been that close myself, and I'd imagine that the view actually isn't all that great. Would I be better served looking for seats a few rows back?

If he's one of those idiots who will stay up and turn around to wave when the puck is at his end of the ice, and he knows he'll be on camera, please do not get the seats right on the glass.
Honest answer: Seats on the glass are a cool novelty to be close to the action. That lasts about 1 period. If he's a serious fan, he'd much rather be back further/higher to actually see gameplay develop.
