Back in the day when I used to play a lot of Strat-o-Matic hockey, I ended up liking a bunch of players simply based on that game and learned a ton about a wide variety of players that I was never familiar with. If this game is as good as Strat-O, you should get a good feel of how each player plays the game, which should increase your interest in the sport.

By all accounts the game has a much better flow and much better detail that Strat which I play but have some issues with. I've kinda been leaning the way of getting more modern players for the exact reasons you outline.
