B1G Commish Delaney Wants Power to Fire Coaches

http://chronicle.com/blogs/players/j...-coaches/30771

Im not real comfortable with this. But it sounds like there would have to be a serious issue for the commish to step in. Then again, it may prevent situations like PsU. Then agian, maybe not.

Do you think it is a good idea for a conference commish to have the power to fire coaches?

Just moves the corruption up a level.

Not sure how it would have made a difference in the Penn State case. Paterno was fired just a few days after the Sandusky arrest.

Don't like the idea of one person with that much power. As rowech said ther is enough corruption and this would likely just lead to more, including pushing schools to try harder to hush things up.

Yeah, right - move that power up to an already legendarily corrupt conference leadership (not just B1G but conferences in general) which would be even less transparent to every day fans.

Next proposal - install artificial "smoke-filled room" at Big Ten HQ.

Why? They've already been blowing smoke up our asses for years now.

In many cases the coach is a state employee, I don't think the commissioner should have the power to fire any government employee.

Probably a face saving move aimed at preventing some sort of punitive action by the NCAA that might jeopardize B1G if PSU gets some sort of year-long suspension.

This is Delany spouting off extreme scenarios so when he and the Big Ten Presidents pussy out and slap Penn State on the wrist, they can talk about how they had included these absurdities on the table.

It's how he does everything. In the last year he did the "We'll never agree to a playoff" and "We want home games for semifinals in the playoff we swore never to agree to" and almost tripped over himself backtracking.
