Ok, we're ready to go. Had one salary cap violation and 1 roster size violation. Here we go with the 1970 season!

300 Home Runs for Estrada
Tuesday, April 28th, 1970: Cleveland left fielder Claudio Estrada blasted himself into an elite group of baseball players. Today he joined the exclusive 300 home run club in the Naps 3-1 loss to the Ann Arbor Wolverines.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone. I was happy to move on. Now I can go and have some fun. It is a weight lifted off my shoulders," Estrada told the press. He admitted just how much pressure he had been feeling. "Especially every time you'd get out of the hotel, everybody would say, 'Hey, when are you going to hit it?'"

In his milestone game, Estrada went 2 for 4 with 1 run batted in and 1 run scored.

Lifetime Estrada has played in 1314 games, batted .267 with 300 home runs and 1353 base hits.

Same goes for the Aztecs. I've got a young pitcher, Arai, which should help my always poor rotation, but other than that there isn't much to be excited about.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Friday, May 1st, 1970: Armando Durán was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 23-year-old first baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 27 games Durán batted .330 for Portland, slapping 31 hits in 94 at-bats with 7 home runs, drove in 20 runs and scored 18 times.

Very impressive for the 4th pitcher taken in the '63 draft. The guys taken ahead of him haven't come close to that kind of production. We'll see how the rest of the season goes.

Indianapolis Dazed, Rodríguez Gets No-Hitter
Tuesday, May 12th, 1970: Juan Rodríguez relied on excellent pitch selection and pinpoint control to hold Indianapolis hitless in his 1-0 win.

"I stayed ahead of batters," he said after the game, "and was able to get a lot of quick outs. My defense deserves a lot of credit too. They had to be on their toes and they saved me several times."

The 25-year-old starter rung up 9 strikeouts and 2 walks in whipping the Clowns.

"When a guy is throwing strikes the way he was and is locating well, it is going to be a long day for any club," the Indianapolis skipper said.

On his stats sheet this season Rodríguez shows a 6-2 record, 10 starts, 64.2 innings, 54 strikeouts and a 1.81 ERA.

Danny Barry Gets Hit Number 2000
Sunday, May 17th, 1970: Danny Barry started out as a baby-faced rookie many seasons ago. Yesterday at Field of the Surf the Virginia Beach veteran joined the league's 2000-hit club. Barry achieved that milestone with a 2-for-4 day in the Surf 7-5 win over the Cleveland Naps.

He spoke to reporters in the clubhouse after the game and said, "Looking at the list of all the great players who have done this is humbling. It is a great honor to be among them."

Barry has a career .333 average with 2000 hits, including 276 doubles, 30 triples and 313 homers, collected 1162 RBIs, scored 1016 runs and compiled a .384 OBP.

Well CRAP. There goes my season. I f'ed up my rotation because the stupid game crashed on me while setting up everything last night. The second time through, I apparently didn't reset my rotation size.

Butler at His Best, Whips Bishops
Saturday, May 30th, 1970: According to Chandler Butler of the Washington Freedom, "There are three important elements in pitching success: location, location, and location." He told his pitching philosophy to sportswriters in the postgame interview after his 10-0 victory over London.

He blanked them on a 1-hitter, allowed 2 walks and had 9 strikeouts. "I really felt comfortable the whole game," Butler said.

His manager echoed his comments, saying, "He hit his spots time and time again."

This year Butler has posted a record of 5 wins and 4 losses with a 2.85 ERA. He has appeared in 12 games and struck out 54 in 82 innings.

Argh....the thing that pisses me the most off is, I distinctly remember resetting the size the first time through, but the second I was in such a rush that I completely forgot.

He collected 5 wins and no losses with 30 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 1.34 ERA in 40.1 innings of work.

This season Morales has compiled a 9-1 mark, 1.69 ERA and made 10 starts.

I fixed it for you just now. I'll usually try to fix things like that if I catch them. (like once someone accidently had a 1-man rotation woops). Sometimes I just don't catch them until after the season though.

Things like this are what drive me crazy about the game. If my ML rotation has 4 guys in it, then it should go with a 4 man rotation. I shouldn't have to worry about whether I set that stupid pulldown.

May's Top Rookie Named by RL
Monday, June 1st, 1970: Youngster Armando Durán emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Portland deserved the honor, batting .301 with 5 home runs and 12 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Durán enjoy the limelight.

Durán is hitting .315 this year with 12 home runs, 32 RBIs and 32 runs scored. He has 62 hits in 197 at-bats, 19 walks and a .383 on-base percentage. Durán has played in 54 games.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Monday, June 1st, 1970: Austin Veeck earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Boston left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Veeck hit .253 with 1 home run, 7 RBIs and 7 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

This season in 51 games, Veeck has hit at a .239 clip with 38 hits, 1 home run, 16 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Pérez on a Rampage, Hits for Cycle
Monday, June 1st, 1970: At Bishops Ballpark today Pedro Pérez led London to a 9-5 victory over the Aztecs by hitting for the cycle, one of baseball's most difficult feats.

The Bishops left fielder told reporters after the game, "Most people think the triple is the hardest one to get, but today, it was the homer... because the ball wasn't carrying. When I took it deep, I expected the ball to die on the warning track. Seeing the umpire give me the signal to circle the bases was sweet."

In addition to going 4-4, Pérez chalked up 4 runs batted in and scored 2 runs in an exceptional performance.

P. Pérez singled in the 1st, hit a two-run triple in the 2nd, hit a two-run home run off A. Bleasdale in the 4th and doubled in the 7th.

This season Pérez is swinging the bat at a .258 rate with 41 hits in 159 at-bats. To date he has hit 7 home runs, scored 23 runs and driven in 23.

Wolverines Chill Zaragoza's Hot Streak
Friday, June 5th, 1970: It was the best of both worlds for the Ann Arbor Wolverines today at Lions Ballpark as they defeated the Spring Lions 4-2 and also ended Manuel Zaragoza's 22-game hitting streak. The 27-year-old Spring right fielder failed to get a hit in 3 at-bats.

"Nothing personal against Manuel, we just wanted to win the game," said the victorious Wolverines skipper. "We did a great job keeping him off-balance and guessing."

When asked by reporters about his streak coming to an end, Zaragoza frowned and said, "I won't lie and say that I'm not disappointed about my streak ending, but I would feel much better about things if we had won the game."

Batting .333 to date, Zaragoza has 10 home runs and 43 RBIs.

Cook Pops 3 Out of the Park Against Wolverines
Monday, June 15th, 1970: Ryan Cook was in a home run mode today at Ann Arbor Grounds. The Cleveland second baseman massacred Wolverines pitching, cracking out three home runs and going 4-4 with 4 RBIs and scoring 4 runs. But this sensational performance didn't really matter. Ann Arbor won the ballgame 13-12 despite the three homers.

"I wish a big 'W' had come with this," he said. "It's great to hit three homers, but the bottom line is whether you win or lose."

Nonetheless, Cook will now have a place in the league record book.

"I guess when you're hot, you're hot," he said. "I'm not going up there trying to hit home runs. I put the good part of the bat on it and luckily three of them went out today."

R. Cook hit a solo-shot off F. Castro in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off F. Castro in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off F. Castro in the 4th, walked in a run in the 5th, walked in the 7th and doubled in the 8th.

In 71 games this season Cook has batted at a .338 pace with 99 hits and 12 home runs.

It's called Baseball Superstars. It looks different but similar if that makes any sense.

Lions Morales No-Hits Grocers
Saturday, June 20th, 1970: It's a rare thing to pitch a no-hitter in baseball. It's done by the great and the not-so-great. There are times when an average pitcher will briefly be glorified by this achievement. It is not an honor reserved totally for the great pitchers. Today at Lions Ballpark, Mauro Morales of the Lions reveled in the glory of a no-hitter. Today he was the best he could be. He held Portland hitless and beat them 4-0.

One of the Grocers told reporters after the game, "Everything was working for him. When that happens, everything is going your way. He was in command."

Morales rung up 8 strikeouts, issued no walks and faced only 28 hitters in his historic outing.

After the game in the Spring locker room, he spoke to reporters. "I really got nervous in the last inning. I knew I had a chance at a no-hitter. It was hard to stay calm and concentrate. Thank goodness for my catcher. He told me to just concentrate on hitting his glove. He would do all of the thinking."

In 15 starts this year Morales has posted 10 wins while suffering 5 losses. He has pitched 116.2 innings, allowed 76 hits, struck out 113 and has a 2.47 ERA.
