I would definitely argue that in "Moulin Rouge" the actors feel much more like they are actually singing the songs than on Glee (However, my wife is sitting next to me saying I'm completely wrong). Certainly older musicals such as Bye Bye Birdie, West Side Story and Wizard of Oz are not overproduced to where you feel like they are lip synching to a radio version of a song. Glee feels much more like a music video than a musical to me.

. In "Moulin Rouge!" you basically had modern music production. However, a lot of the songs were mash ups, so maybe that's why it felt like they were more singing the songs.

And in modern musicals, the showtunes definitely have high production values (see "Wicked" or "Jersey Boys" or "Avenue Q" or, even, "Spamalot").

If you're talking stage musicals I definitely can't get behind you -- they may have high production values, but it doesn't look like a music video as Glee does.

Just watched the first 2 episodes on hulu. It's an alright show, though not as good as I expected it would be, based on word-of-mouth. I'm not sure it's a compelling enough general plot to have legs, either, but we'll see. I've got it set to record on my DVR for the next couple episodes, I have a feeling I'll lose interest.

Are they lip-sync'ing in the show (I assume they are). If they are, they should teach those kids what shapes peoples' mouths make when they're actually singing. They're really off.

But it's like when they're lip-sync'ing, they're saying the words as opposed to singing. I can't describe it, but when you hear certain sounds, you expect the mouth to look a certain way...more "rounded" is what I can come up with...

The singing is fine (though I'm actually kind of tired of it), but it's like their lip sync's are them saying the words instead of singing. It's a total nitpick, but kept driving me bonkers.

Anyway, for me, I estimate that unless things turn around with the show in general, I'll be bored with it in 2-3 more episodes, with or without mouths moving in more intuitive ways.

They aren't developing any story lines. I wish they'd slow down and narrow the focus instead of coming up with so many different sub-plots.

Well, I think this episode was a focus on the other major characters we introduced episode. This was a Mercedes and Kurt focused episode. That and we saw the loyalty of Finn to Will.

And we saw a new side of Quinn at the end as well.

And the whole Accafellas. And Josh Grobin. And his father. And the choreographer.

It' not that any of them are bad, but they're blowing through ideas at a really fast pace. I already felt like the dialogue wasn't equal to the first two episodes. Can they sustain this volume of plot for a whole season?

Acafellas is over (obviously). So is Grobin. The father was there to kind of cement the theme of confidence, which I'm sure will carry over into the Glee club. The choregrapher is also a one shot.

So I'm not sure I'd necessarily consider them "sub-plots", but more of a one episode deal (which is different, IMO).

Also you need a few things in there to change things up because a straight march to Regionals (which undoubtedly be the season finale) may get boring.

The syncing was bad for the big music-video song, but other than that it was fun. I think they're developing characters and stories well so far. The head cheerleader is not totally with that cheerleader training person, The main guy's wife is noticing that OCD girl has a thing for her husband, The gay guy and black girl have developed a nice friendship (he came out to her so I assume he must trust her). Digging a deeper hole for the pregnancy. There might have been more, but those are the plot/character points I can remember.

More plot driven and less music than last week. I think some of the "overproduced" crowd would have liked this episode actually.

The football team dancing to Beyonce at the game was HILARIOUS (though sooo false start-ish).

Oh i agree with that, but the scenes just feel so out of place...I get why they have the son come out to the father, but it just feels forced in the context of the rest of the show. They need to find a better way to transition into the sappy moments, as right now they just don't fit into the show in my eyes. Were going laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh, then just out of the blue serious dramatic moment. For a show that is so over the top in its comedy, i think its just tough to suddenly go back to serious without some kind of transition they are lacking.

I enjoyed this past episode, but the football team dancing during a game was an "oh no" moment for me. Wasn't a big fan of that but overall a good episode.

Yup.

All I keep saying to my wife after each episode is, "this show is all over the place". There's just not a flow to it.

Just watched it (DVR FTW!). Absolutely brilliant episode. Chenowith was phenomenal and that first number with the April/Rachel performance and the April/Will performance of "Alone" was just jawdropping. Some great one liners as well: "I was aroused... and furious"

Tonight's was the best episode I've seen. I can see where some folks are saying "too much music", but I'm wanting to see where they take it. There is a balance, and they need to get better at making the musical segues/interludes. As they get a better feel for what works and what doesn't, I think they will fit in more. If that makes sense.

The "I don't know where you're office is" line was great, and the Cheerio spouting out "That's was Sue 'C's" set me laughing.
