Round 1: No surprises here as no one is expecting a long fight. McAlpine is turely uncontested in the welterweight division. After waiting over a year for a real challenge to develop, the best out there, the number 1 contender, is Bryan Towers. McAlpine did what everyone expected him to do, and that is to give Towers a beating. By the end of the round, Towers' left eye is swelling and he has a cut over his right eye. A 10-8 round because of how one sided it was (Round to McAlpine 10-8, 10-8)

Round 2: McAlpine slowed up a bit in this round as there is no need to take chances or try very hard. He wins the round easily. (Round to McAlpine, 20-17 McAlpine)

Round 3: At the start of the round, McAlpine landed a shot to Towers' right eye which tore open the cut. The bleeding was just too severe and the referee stops the fight.

The referee stops the fight at 0:47 of the 3rd round. Your winner by technical knock out, and STILL WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, TOM McALPINE!

A Look at the Champions

Heavyweights
John L Sullivan (26-1-1 21KO)
Won title: Sept 20th, 1885 vs. Larry Foley by KO1

Possible Challengers: Larry Foley won the first fight between them in January of 1885. He'll be looking to get a 3rd match with Sullivan, although he recent draw with John Donaldson dropped hima few places in the rankings. The word is Foley's age has caught up with him and he's done.

Other challengers include Jake Kilrain and Charley Mitchell. Kilrain lasted 10 rounds against Sullivan, losing a Unanimous Decision. Mitchell, the #2 ranked heavyweight, has never fought Sullivan. One last viable challenger would be Peter Jackson, although he's lost a few and has been very inactive. His 2 loses were to Sullivan (by TKO6) and Kilrain (by SD10)


Middleweights
Irish Jack Burke (20-3-0 16KO)
Won title on Sept. 20, 1885 vs. Billy Baker by TKO11

This is Burke's second reign as middleweight champion. He first won the title on 4/14/1882 by beating Jimmy Murray. He lost the title a year later to Billy Baker.

Possible Challengers: In his time between reigns, Burke only lost twice out of 14 fights. Bob Turnball beat him by MD10 (avenged a year later by KO10) and George LaBlanche. Both loses occured in 1883.

Billy Baker will definately be looking for a rematch. The last possible challenger, and the most obvious, would be newcomer Jack Dempsey. He's won all 13 of his fights, 11 by KO. Most experts predict that once he gets his shot, he'll have a long reign as champion.

Welterweights
Tom McAlpine (16-0-0 13KO)
Won Title on 7/29/1882 vs Nick Manno by TKO1

He has defended the title 4 times since winning the title. He's won all of his defense by KO.

Possible Challengers: Not many. Paddy Duffy and Paddy Sullivan look like they have the ability to give McAlpine a challenge, but both are pretty inconsistent. Jack C McGee was well on his way to a title shot, but he's lost his last two fights.

Jem Carney (12-0-0 7KO)
Won Title on 10/21/1883 vs George Taylor by TKO15

Lucky to have his title. Was losing to Billy Myer when he was awarded the fight based on cuts.

Possible Challengers: Billy Myer will be getting a rematch. After that, Billy Edwards, a former lightweight champion, recently drew Myer and could be looking to get another shot.

Newcomer Jack McAuliffe, undefeated in his 16 fights (14 by KO), beat Billy Edwards last year by UD10 and has won his last 3 fights by KO.

Featherweights
Torpedo Billy Murphy (20-2-0 14KO)
Won Title on 8/11/1885 vs Stirling Stomp by UD15

Possible Challengers: Stirling Stomp should get a rematch, as he is the former champ. Newcomer Fred Johnson (16-1-0 9KO) looks like he can give Murphy a tough challenge.

Bill Baxter (16-2-1 6KO)
Won Title on 2/2/1885 vs Gerald Tickering by UD15

Fought for the belt on 2/3/1883 as well, losing to Tickering by UD15

Possible Challengers: Baxter and Tickering are going to fight for the 3rd time in February for the title. Youngster Nelson Moreno (11-0-0 4KO) looks like he could give Baxter or Tickering a challenge as well.

Tom McApline Retires

Reigning welterweight champion, Tom McAlpine, has decided to hang up his gloves for good at the age of 42. The old time champion has dominated the division since its creation several years ago and was the first fighter to win the WBG Welterweight Title. He has successfully defended the title 4 times since winning it in 1882, winning all fights by knockout.

Had he desired, he could have dominated this weak division for several more years. There was also specualtion of him moving up in weight to fight for the middleweight crown. But at 42, he said it was time to retire.

The WBG World Welterweight Title is now vacant. The WBG has stated it is setting up a tournament to decide the new champion, as there is no clear-cut #1 welterweight out there.

May 19, 1885 - Carney win TKO5, stopped on cuts

Round 1: The champion comes out swinging. He doesn't want any questions after this bout. He lands several hard shots and already has Myer's right eye swelling up. (Round to Carney, 10-9)

Round 2: Myer answers back in this round, dominating much of the action. When the bell rang to end the round, Carney showed visible signs of swelling over his right eye. Both men are out to hurt each other. (Round to Myer, 19-19 Even)

Round 3: Carney goes to work. He comes back in this round and beat up Myer pretty badly. The swelling for both fighters is getting worse, but Myer was hurt several times in the round, and is now carrying his hand low. He looks tired and beaten already. (Round to Carney, 29-28 Carney)

Round 4: A more even round. Myer comes out, trying to gain back control, but Carney does his job and keeps Myer off of him. Carney controlled most of the action. (Round to Carney, 39-37 Carney)

Round 5: Carney landed several power shots this round and hurt Myer pretty badly. The swelling over Myer's right eye has gotten terrible. I'm not sure he can see out of that eye anymore. Both fighters look beaten, but Myer is far worse. (Round to Carney, 49-46 Carney)

Round 6: Close round as Carney looks to not to want to take any chances. He wins a very close round. Myer is looking exhausted out there. It might not be long before the referee stops the fight on account of the massive swelling over Myer's right eye. (Round to Carney, 59-55 Carney)

Round 7: Carney is landing power shots at will as the swelling has gotten extreme. I can't see how this fight can go on much longer. Myer obviously can't see out of his right eye, and he can barely keep his hands up to defend himself. (Round to Carney, 69-64 Carney)

Round 8: The referee looked at the swelling twice this round but let the fight continue. As the round neared its end, Myer was dropped by Carney. He managed to get to his feet, but barely. The referee took one look at him and waved his arms. Myer had had enough.

The referee stops the fight at 2:58 of the 8th round, your winner by technical knock out, and STILL WBG LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, JEM CARNEY

Round 1: The round started off slow, but Baxter quickly takes control of the fight. He had Tickering on the defensive for most of the round. (Round to Vaxter, 10-9)

Round 2: The round started off even, with both fighters scoring points here and there, but Baxter took over in the last minute and now Tickering's right eye is showing some swelling. (Round to Baxter, 20-18 Baxter)

Round 3: Baxter remains in total control. He lands a shot here and there, and Tickering can't seem to land anything in this round. (Round to Baxter, 30-27 Baxter)

Round 4: Tickering shows signs of life for the first minute, but Baxter comes storming back and had Tickering running for much of the round. (Round to Baxter, 40-36 Baxter)

Round 5: Baxter opens up a cut over Tickering's already swelling right eye. The cut isn't bad right now, but it's right over the eyebrow and could cause problems later in the fight. (Round to Baxter, 50-45 Baxter)

Round 6: Baxter continues to dominate Tickering. (Round to Baxter, 60-54 Baxter)

Round 7: The cut over Tickering's right eye has worsen and is now visibly bothering Tickering. Baxter landed several power shots that hurt Tickering and Tickering's right eye, both cut and swelling, is looking very badly. (Round to Baxter, 70-63 Baxter)

Round 8: Baxter doesn't land anything strong, but he stays to the outside, seeming taking the round off, and lands at will from a distance. (Round to Baxter, 80-72 Baxter)

Round 9: Baxter continues his domination. He doesn't want to take any chances and is just winning it outside now. (Round to Baxter, 90-81 Baxter)

Round 10: Baxter wins yet another round. He seems content to just sit back, score points and wait for Tickering to open himself up and catch him with a counter. So far, he's winning the fight big. (Round to baxter, 100-90 Baxter)

Round 11: Yet another round for Baxter. The referee is getting close to stopping this fight. Tickering isn't showing much offense. (Round to Baxter, 110-99 Baxter)

Round 12: Another easy round for Baxter. (Round to Baxter, 120-108 Baxter)

Round 13: Baxter was coasting to another round won when he lands a shot late in the round that worsens the cut over Tickering's right eye yet again. The referee stops the fight, saying the cut has gotten too bad.

Larry Foley shockingly loses to 16th rank Harry Woodson by unanimous decision. A lose a fighter outside of the top 10 effectively takes him out of the title picture. Foley has been very disappointing since losing his title. He drew John Donaldson, went on to win a majority decision against Charles Hadley (ranked 17 at the time) and has now lost a un. decision to a 16th ranked fighter. The time might have come for Larry Foley to retire. He has definately passed his prime.

No your right, pre 1900 Fights often went to a finish and even in the early 1900's through the Teens fights were scheduled for 20 rounds or more. Unfortunately TB2 doesn't have an option to go more than 15 rounds.

Right. The rules back then were very different.

If you look at the fight history of a lot of fighters, you'll see a LOT of 3 round exhibitions. That's one way a fighter made money back then. You take two high profile fighters, and they basically toured the country, fighting 3 round exhibitions (imagine if, say, Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins went from city to city, fighting 3 round exhibitons. That sort of thing happened a lot back then)

But back in the bareknuckle era (London Prize Ring rules), rounds lasted until a fighter was kncoked down. If you played Fight Night Round 3 (and Round 2 had it I think), the Hard Hits rules are similar to how the rounds went. When a fighter was knocked down, the round would be over. When the next round started, if the fighter how got knocked down could not continue, it was ruled a KO (I think the fighter had to make it back to his corner within a certain amount of time too or have it ruled a KO).

These are the fights you hear about going into the 40+ round range. John L. Sullivan's last bareknuckle defense against Jake Kilrain lasted 75 rounds, but lasted an hour and a half (which averages out to a little over 1 minute per round).

As BYU points out, TB2 does not simulate these kinds of fights. And the max round limit in the game is 15 rounds (plus, back then and for much of boxing's history, decisions were decided by the referee, not a panel of judges. That part is available in TB2, tho). That's why I started off the dynasty by making it an alternate history type dynasty. "What if they fought with the same rules that fighters fight with now" sort of thing.

Round 6: Again Dempsey starts off with a hard shot that staggers Burke, and again, Burke spends most of the round getting hit with clean shots. The last two rounds have taken a bit out of the champ. (Round to Dempsey, 58-56 Dempsey)

Round 7: It looks like this is becoming Dempsey's fight. He spends another round mostly giving out punishment. Burke did get a nice shot in near the end of the round that stunned Dempsey, but too little, too late. (Round to Dempsey, 68-65 Dempsey)

Round 8: A very close round. Some swelling is now visible over Dempsey's right eye. The champ kept it close, and did a bit more. (Round to Burke, 77-75 Dempsey)

Round 9: Burke turned the tide for most of the round where he got a shot in that put Dempsey on the defensive. However, Dempseystormed back at the end, landing several shots of his own. (Round to Burke, 86-85 Dempsey)

Round 10: Action clowed down some. Dempsey wins an uneventful round. (Round to Dempsey, 96-94 Dempsey)

Round 11: They made up for the lack of action in this round. It went back and forth, but as the round closed, Burke landed a couple of nice shots to punctuate the round. (Round to Burke, 105-104 Dempsey)

May 1886 Results

The downfall of former champion Larry Foley continues, as he lost by KO9 to a middle aged journeyman named George "Old Chocolate" Godfrey. The lose pretty much seals his fate. Climbing back up the ranks at his age will be close to impossible as this marks his 2nd lose in a row to a low ranked fighter and has taken him entirely out of the top 10.

Jake Kilrain also stumbled. He was getting in line for a title shot when he shockingly lost a decision to journeyman Al Greenfield. He slips far down the ranks as well. As a result, Peter Jackson finds himself sitting in the #1 contender spot.

June 1886 Results

El-Shamy Dida, a fighter from Ethiopia now fighting in the US, defeated Bubba Moonshine to set himself up for a title shot at Torpedo Billy Murphy. Looks liek that fight is on for August.

Peter Jackson and Jake Kilrain fought to a draw this month, putting in doubts Jackson's chance at a title shot. However, with Larry Foley and Kilrain both still low in the rankings, Peter Jackson is the only real fight out there for the champion.

George LaBlanche and WC McClellan also fought to a technical draw this month. Both were looking to jump into the #1 contender spot, but both stay just short as the former champion, Irish Jack Burke, still sits there.

Round 2: Jackson simply dominated the round, using his speed and tectical skill to stay away from Sullivan's incredible power. (Round to Jackson, 19-19 Even)

Round 3: A very slow, uneventful round. (Round to Sullivan, 29-28 Sullivan)

Round 4: Jackson got caught early and went to the canvas. He gets up quickly, but takes brutal punishment before being sent to the canvas a second time. He barely made it up at the cound of 9 and survives the round. (Round to Sullivan 10-7, 39-35 Sullivan)

It's been over 2 1/2 years since WC McClellan fought Billy Baker for the middleweight title, losing by a majority decision. Since then, he's fought 13 times, with a record of 10-2-1, with 6 KOs. This month, he defeated previously unbeaten Bill Gabig and has secured his place in the top 5 at #2 and looks like he might be able to get himself another title shot. He's 0-2 in title fights, losing to Billy Baker and Irish Jack Burke. If he can keep up his recent success, he may just get the chance at his 3rd.

January 1887 Results

Larry Foley Retires - In his last attampt to try to secure a 3rd match with John L. Sullivan, Larry Foley lost a majority decision to Peter Jackson, who is currently the #1 contender. While a majority decision lose would suggest the he still has the skills to compete with the top ranked fighters, Foley has said that his time to retire has come.

Foley defeated the first heavyweight champion recognized by the WBG, Paddy Ryan, on March 7th, 1882 by knockout in the 14th round. After that, he successfuly defended the title 4 times over the course of 3 years. He defeated heavily favored challenger John L. Sullivan by KO in the 5th round on January 22nd, 1885 and then lost the rematch later that year when he was knocked out in the 1st round. The public was looking forward to a rematch, but Foley lost a unanimous decision to journeyman Harry Woodson early in 1886 when talks of the 3rd match were just starting. He was unable to recover in the rankings after that shocking lose.

Since losing the title to Sullivan, Foley has gone 6-4-1 with 1 win by KO. His career record stands at 18-5-1 with 9 KO.
