Ukraine does not look confident during the national anthems. Quite nervy.

England does not look confident in the first half hour. Quite worrying... Ashley Young seems to have been told to let his man run free whenever he wants; Cole is facing 2 on 1 most times

England is asking for the goal against them. I get that you play defensive there, but thereīs playing defensive and then thereīs giving up your chances (because Ukraine is not good defensively).
Rooney looks flat so far, quite literally on that heading chance Quote:
way to overanalyze based on basically nothing Ukraine with some very interesting play, their tactical scheme is quite asymetric actually. England got better defensively after about 30 minutes, but for a host team (=big time pressure) with less than stellar players and having a few experienced players replaced with younger guys they have looked pretty poised. I like Devicīs play, Milevskiy seems a bit slow (on foot as well as in mind) today. Yarmolenko with his best game so far. Rakitskiy (the new CB) is normally a Left Back, isnīt he ? Definitely knows how to pass the ball from the back, had a couple impressive ones and with England having only Welbeck up front thatīs a nice move by Blokhin. Hope Shevchenko comes on and scores the winner, thatīd be a great story

Terry just cleared the ball, but it was over the line. However, the forward who received the long ball was offside, so should never have got to that stage. Second missed offside by that linesman...

Ball was over the line, I'd wager, but he was offside anyway.

Some nice censorship by UEFA there to never show a conclusive view on any of the TV feeds.
Regardless of that play being a fair outcome, England very very lucky. A team with a real striker could have won that game 3 or 4-1. |

Seems like every other sport has instant replay. I can't imagine why they don't for controversial goals. It doesn't slow anything down more than the 25 times per game somebody is rolling around the ground after light contact.

Impressive game by Ronaldo, definitely more than just show yesterday.
Portugal with a bad first half but a very good 2nd, Czech just not good enough, especially with Rosicky out injured Tonight Germany vs Greece German media is reporting that the german coach is significantly changing up the offense, bringing in Klose for Gomez and also Schuerrle/Reus for Müller and Podolski, quite shocking after 3 wins but actually makes sense on the pitch as all 3 new guys imo are better fits against a defense-only team like greece where open space is a rarity. At Right back Boateng comes back in after missing last game with a 2xyellow suspension.

Will be worth little if they donīt win 2 more, but this was the teams 15th win in a row in all competitions (3rd place game, 10 qualification macthes, 3 group games and then yesterday)
A greek player (i think it was Katsouranis) after the game : "Maybe we risked too much" Great game by the german team, could have just as well ended 6:0. it was pretty neat how many clear cut chances the team created and not just by power but mainly with fine combinations. Hope Klose stays in there. While he didnīt have a really great game (but good) he just so clearly opens up space for everybody with his runs towards the ball and his one-touch passing ability. Plus as we witnessed, he isnīt exactly a bad option up in the air himself (what an awesome jump) Reus was terrific and his goal was basically "fuck this, now finally go in you stupid ball". Khedira was outstanding as well. Schweinsteiger was awfull yesterday, Boateng close to that as well. Other than that a very, very good game. Hope the front 4 will be Müller-Özil-Reus-Klose next game.

Heart is saying England will beat Italy today 2-1.
Unfortunately my head is saying that the pace and movement of the Italian team will absolutely muller the English defense, Terry has already been found wanting in previous games and at some point its going to cost us either in a goal or a red card as someone mis-times a recovery tackle. That combined with my lack of faith in Rooney pressuring Pirlo and stifling his creativity (going by previous games Gerrard and Parker will sit deep meaning Rooney is the only option for that) mean that my head is expecting a 1-3 defeat .... I really hope my head is wrong. (my head is really saying 0-2, but I can't predict an England match and leave us without scoring ) Last edited by Marc Vaughan : 06-24-2012 at 11:15 AM. |

Strange subs: thought Welbeck was doing better than Rooney and Milner was doing much better than Young. We were great for 20-25 minutes, and for the first 5 mins of second half, but are now very much second best. Not looking good

the difference between Rooney and Welbeck was so marginal, no way does any coach in the world take out the star player unless the other sub-out-option has a really great game. Welbeck didnīt even have a good game so far.
Was Milner even on the pitch ? De Rossi aparently didnīt bother with him, if you watched him you saw him (theoretically the left midfielder) not even bothering to help out Balzaretti and basically play in the centre more than on the left and also kind of wait for Gerrard to enter his zone to then mark him when Gerrard went to the right. Also, Walcott only makes sense on the right flank. Of course one could argue that Milner could play on the left then, but i donīt see that making much more sense than just leaving Young in and hope for the best.

That all makes sense, but I don't think Ashley Young has passed the ball to a white shirt this half. Welbeck was the only one who was holding on to the ball and giving Gerrard and Parker a bit of a rest. We've had even less of the ball since the subs
But I agree, never going to take Rooney off, regardless. I would have bought taking Young and Milner off, dropping Rooney into midfield and going 433 with Walcott and Welbeck out wide.

You could even drop Milner into midfield and have Carroll/Walcott/Rooney up top. I'd be comfortable with Walcott on the right in a 4-3-3 with Rooney kind of roaming about. You know he's going to track back and defend regardless of where he's playing.

And he could sit on Pirlo too and cut his effectiveness. Rooney could still run off him whenever he wanted to gong forward

Surprised Abate came out. He's got to be gassed after running freely past Ashley Young all second half.

Tired legs should suit Walcott - hopefully England will push on and get something by crossing out wide now Carroll is on the pitch ...

no offense, but i donīt see "it" with Hart. Surely not a bad keeper and seems to have a good attitude, but he either misjudges or mishandles a couple balls each game it seems. He also seems to lack some natural mobility, doesnīt he ?
Italy donīt have any actual wide players in midfield and both fullbacks are so-so, that makes things tough in a game like this.

He's not 100% sure handed all the time, but pretty good. He's still young for a keeper though, and has a good presence. Think his strength is his organisation and command of the defence

England begging for that goal against ... A team with actual goal scoring option would have won that game comfortably by now (Balotelli redefining an unlucky game up front, other than him a lot of passers and no scorers)
They sure play what they can and i get that people are happy with the tournament so far, but this would not be what one would call a deserved win for England. Letīs see if we see the next sign of the apocalypse with them winning on penalties Though Italy isnīt much better historically. over/under for missed kicks, 4 ?
