CL Honors García, #1 Batter in April

Sergio García battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 34-year-old García told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 26 games, García hit .298 with 8 home runs, 17 RBIs and scored 21 runs.


April's Best Batter Announced

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 31-year-old Brian Clark put together a solid offensive month for Las Vegas and was crowned April's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .340 with 9 home runs, 17 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

González Wins Best CL Pitcher

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Jaime González still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 30-year-old starter for Omaha was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and 1 loss with 43 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 1.91 ERA in 33 innings of work.


RL Selects Williams April's Best Pitcher

Johnny Williams is at the zenith of his career and today he was selected as the Republic League Pitcher of the Month for April.

He made 11 relief appearances for Spring last month, throwing 12.1 innings and collecting 8 saves, a 2-0 record, 16 strikeouts and a 2.19 ERA.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Youngster Ramón Cordero emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Havana deserved the honor, batting .280 with 1 home run and 2 runs batted in. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Cordero enjoy the limelight.

It was an excellent month for Chip Richardson. He really swung into action! The right fielder for the Spring Lions was named April's best newcomer in the Republic League.

Plantana's De Jesús Top CL Batter in May

Plantana's Cristián De Jesús wowed sportswriters in May with an award-winning performance. For his standout play he was voted the Continental League Batter of the Month.

He rang up a .378 batting average with 11 home runs, 27 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He also had 5 walks and a .398 on-base percentage.

This season De Jesús is hitting at a .341 pace with 16 home runs, 46 RBIs and has scored 38 times.


Edwards Captures RL Batter of Month Award

A hot-hitting Bill Edwards punished RL pitchers in May, hitting .343 in 28 games while racking up 10 home runs, 30 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

With those numbers it came as no surprise that Waikiki's 28-year-old left fielder earned Republic League Batter of the Month honors.

So far this season Edwards has hit .297 with 11 home runs, 36 RBIs and and scored 26 times.

May's Best Hurler in CL Is Sánchez

Luis Sánchez has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in May and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Freedom bullpen ace collected 8 saves and 15 strikeouts in 13.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .245 average and posting a 1.35 ERA and a 3-0 record.

This year in 23 relief appearances, Sánchez has collected 15 saves while posting an ERA of 2.63 and 29 strikeouts in 24 innings. His totals for the year also include 4 wins and 1 loss.


Springer Picked as May's Pitcher of the Month

Paul Springer hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Republic League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In May the Waikiki starter earned a 5-0 mark in 6 starts. He threw 42.1 innings, struck out 32 and compiled a solid 2.76 ERA.

To this point in the season, Springer shows a 6-2 record, 11 starts, 79.2 innings, 58 strikeouts and a 3.05 ERA.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Ramón Cordero's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Havana right fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .328 with 9 doubles, 3 triples and 2 home runs. Cordero also scored 20 times and drove in 12 runs.

This season Cordero is batting .306 with 68 hits, 3 home runs, 14 RBIs, 16 walks, .353 OBP and has scored 40 runs. He has played in 53 games.


Yap Wins Rookie of the Month

Mi-yuan Yap is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Maricopa hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .295 average with 33 hits, 6 home runs and 11 RBIs.

On the season, Yap is batting .273 with 7 home runs and 18 RBIs. He has played in 53 games.

Bermúdez Earns June's Top Batter Prize in CL

Ramón Bermúdez received the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month.

"He might be getting older," London's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Ramón's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field."

To win the honor Bermúdez put up a .351 batting average, 8 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 18 times in June.

This season Bermúdez is hitting .266 with 13 home runs.


García Brings Home RL Batter of Month Honor

Jaime García of the Portland Axemen recorded a .352 batting average in June. His hitting spree racked up the Republic League Batter of the Month award for his trophy case.

The Portland right fielder battered opposing pitchers all month, accumulating 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and scoring 21 runs.

This season García has hit 26 home runs and posted a .347 batting average.

CL #1 Pitcher in June is St Louis's Browning

Dan Browning's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 3-0 in June, the 30-year-old St Louis hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 9 in 10.1 innings, logged an ERA of 0.00 and allowed opponents to hit .167 against him.

On the year Browning has compiled a 4-1 mark with a 1.95 ERA.


Morales Is RL's Best Pitcher in June

Veteran Carlos Morales put together quite a successful stretch in June for the Waikiki Beach Boys, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Morales racked up a 4-1 record in 6 starts, posting a 1.45 ERA over 37.1 innings and striking out 38.

For the season Morales has compiled a 9-3 record with a 2.58 ERA.

It's a time for celebration in Plantana as Jesús Yánez has just walked away with July's Continental League Batter of the Month award.

He socked 41 hits in 98 at-bats to put up a .418 batting average, 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

This season Yánez has hit at a .310 clip with 60 RBIs, 16 home runs and 60 runs scored.


Republic League Picks July's Best Batter

July's Batter of the Month has been chosen by the Republic League. This month's trophy was awarded to the Waikiki first baseman, Jeff Davis.

He starred by hitting .314 with a .381 on-base percentage, totaled 27 hits in 86 at-bats, 9 home runs, 18 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

Thus far this season Davis has hit .317 with 25 home runs, 63 RBIs and scored 70 times.

July's Best CL Hurler is Sánchez

When the Banana Sluggers skipper wrote Sánchez on the lineup card, it was a bad omen for the opposition. Outing after outing in July he took command and usually got the win.

He dominated with a 4-0 mark and 2.43 ERA in 5 starts. The gifted Banana Sluggers star pitched 37 innings, fanned 32 and held opposing teams to a .252 average.

For his excellent mound work Sánchez was named the CL Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

Currently Sánchez has a record of 10-7 with 114 strikeouts and 13 walks in 134.1 innings and a 3.82 ERA.


Republic League Selects #1 Starter in July

As Ángelo Rodríguez hoisted up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy for July, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Portland once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Rodríguez put pressure on the Axemen to keep him around by posting a 4-1 record and an ERA of 2.84 over 38 innings last month. He also rolled up 28 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Portland and to every other team in the league.

In 21 starts this season Rodríguez has compiled a 11-7 record and a 3.21 ERA.

CL Rookie Hittin' on All Cylinders in July

The Continental League made the official announcement today. The Rookie of the Month honor went to John Wilson of St Louis. He was singled out as the top-rated rookie for the month of July.

Last month the 25-year-old Hops center fielder played in 20 games and hit .371 with 10 doubles, 2 triples and no home runs. Wilson also scored 13 times and drove in 10 runs.

Wilson is hitting .302 so far this season with 31 RBIs and 27 runs scored. He has 77 hits including 2 home runs, 21 walks and .353 OBP.


RL Names Cardenas Best Rookie

During the month Miguel Cardenas socked and slapped the baseball all over Republic League ballparks to pull in a majority of the votes for the Rookie of the Month award.

In July the shortstop for Waikiki collected 26 hits, 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 13 runs scored. He batted .277 with a .330 OBP.

To date, Cardenas has collected 105 hits for a .261 average. He has posted 2 home runs, scored 52 runs and driven in 31 runs.

According to the voters who decide the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award, it was Bill Sawyer of the London Bishops.

He put together a record of 4-1 with an ERA of 0.98 in 6 starting assignments. In addition, he struck out 50 in 46 innings.

In 27 starts this year Sawyer has crafted a 11-8 record and a 3.39 ERA.

It was an awesome August for Bill Sawyer. The young London starter surprised opponents all month and today was announced as the Continental League Rookie of the Month.

In 6 starts he registered a 4-1 record and racked up 50 strikeouts and a 0.98 ERA in 46 innings.

Sawyer has fashioned a 11-8 mark for the season, 3.39 ERA and thrown 180.1 innings in 27 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .225 against him.


Best RL Rookie Named, Nod to Yap

What a fantastic August it was for Mi-yuan Yap! The Maricopa right fielder battered Republic League hurlers for a .336 batting average as he easily claimed the Rookie of the Month Award.

He tallied 2 home runs, 15 RBIs and 26 runs scored in the month-long assault. Yap also had 18 walks for a .423 on-base percentage.

If he continues to outpace the rookie class like this, he could very well be the 2118 Kien-lung Teng Award winner.

To date Yap has chalked up a .296 average with 13 home runs, driven in 52 runs and scored 111 times.

Palácios Takes Home CL Top Batter Award

The Continental League Batter of the Month has been picked for September and the honor goes to the Washington Freedom Augusto Palácios.

He compiled a .393 batting average with 42 hits and 7 home runs, along with 20 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

Looking at his season stats, Palácios has compiled a .309 batting average and a .357 on-base percentage, while hitting 31 home runs and driving in 102 runs.


RL Best Hitter Trophy Goes to Jaimes

When guys like Portland's Domingo Jaimes win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive September, the longtime Republic League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 38 hits in 102 at-bats.

The veteran shortstop hit for a .373 batting average and collected 7 home runs, 16 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

Currently Jaimes is batting .314 with 25 home runs, 74 RBIs and 113 runs scored.

CL Starter of the Month Goes to Rodríguez

September's top-rated pitcher was Rafael Rodríguez of Washington Freedom. He demoralized Continental League hitters in posting a 3-0 record and captured the Pitcher of the Month award.

In 6 starts, Rodríguez limited opposing batters to a .181 average. He rang up 34 strikeouts in 43 innings of work, issued 7 walks, and crafted a 2.09 ERA.

This year Rodríguez has recorded a 9-10 mark. In 32 starts he has fanned 148 batters in 192 innings with a 3.47 ERA.


Republic League Announces Best Starter

When José Torres takes the hill, chances are good for a Chicago victory. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 3-0 mark and 0.76 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 35.2 innings, fanned 23 and held others clubs to a .211 average.

That's why the Hitmen star was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Republic League.

Up to now Torres has recorded a record of 10-5. In 32 starts he has fanned 117 batters in 186.2 innings with a 3.71 ERA.

The standout Continental League rookie in September was Havana's right fielder Ramón Cordero.

Last month he played in 27 games and hit .287 with 12 doubles, 1 triple, and 6 home runs. Cordero also scored 19 times and drove in 14 runs.

Cordero is currently hitting at a .276 pace with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs.

For the season, Cardenas is hitting at a .249 clip with 4 home runs, 45 RBIs and has scored 72 runs. He has 149 hits, 48 walks and a .309 on-base percentage.
