Navy jet crashes into apartment complex
hxxp://www.wavy.com/dpp/news/local_news/va_beach/military-plane-crashes-in-virginia-beach
Pilots were able to eject safely, and apparently dumped a ton of fuel before they jumped. No word on casualties on the ground yet. The apartment complex was located about half a mile away from a middle school which luckily didn't have school today.

Luckily? How many kids who might have been safely at school were instead at home in their apartment?

I read that the apartment complex may be a senior living complex. So there's the potential that a lot of people were at home at the time unfortunately.

I'll wait for details and deaths, but I'm not sure ejecting is the move here.

That's true. I worded that wrong. What I meant was it was lucky there was no school AND that that it didn't hit the school. This is usually the area I work, and I've never been to these apartments for a call so I can't say much about the residents.

While it is definitely an evidential leap the reporter should not have made, in all fairness, he did frame it as a "he said".

FWIW, all reports so far are the seats are right at the crash sight, implying they ejected at the last possible moment. They stayed with it long enough to dump fuel and avoid an even worse fireball as well.

Considering one of the officers (I won't say pilot because I don't know which one it was) was still in his seat they must have ejected at the last possible moment to try and minimize losses. |

Also saw this, looks like they took every step possible to minimize civilian casualties, so i think they deserve props at this point. One of the aviators had to actually be cut down from the wreckage of the building by residents. |

Dola, just talked to my son who is stationed in Va now, says early word he is getting is that things would have been much worse if not for the actions of the pilot.

I'm usually amazed how relatively low the casualties are in plane/building collisions (with one notable exception, of course), hopefully that's the case here too.....you'd think a plane would take out a whole city block but a lot of times it seems like the damage is pretty localized.

I think where it crashed, isn't that far from the ocean and I'm sure if they could have done it, they would have ditched it in the ocean.

Able to get a little better view of the wreckage/damage.

My bro in-law is a jet pilot for the navy at VB, he did know one of the pilots. I don't have much info though as I've been at work today.

The people I still talk to back there are safe. I used to work at that air station.

Three people being reported as unaccounted for, all from the same building. No confirmed fatalities. Doesn't look good with 3 people missing from the same building, but absolutely incredible that the the number isn't higher.

Looking like no deaths. The 3 people reported as unaccounted for was inaccurate; they had moved out before this. All listed tenants have been accounted for. Incredible.

Glad to hear it...and now, more than ever, I can appreciate the quick work to dump the fuel before impact.

Saw this on the front page of the Richmond paper this morning. I reminded my wife we were just down Birdneck Road at the Virginia Aquarium (on General Boothe Blvd) exactly two weeks ago on her class trip (I was a chaperon for a bunch of fifth grade boys).
An exploding jet certainly would have sent the kids into a tizzy. All we had was one of the four buses break down in the parking lot--pretty much standard for one of these trips.
