Moon Lunacy strikes again: The impending Supermoon is to an average full Moon what a 16" Pizza is to a 15" Pizza. So chillax.

Just took a look. I don't see any damn difference.

Next time they make a big deal about this to get millions of people to stare at the moon for no reason, someone should be smart enough to plaster the moon with an advertising slogan or something.

It's noticeably larger than a typical full moon as it's coming over the horizon. Once it's up in the sky, it's not so impressive.

Noticeably brighter than an average moon, probably a bit larger if you're thinking about it but otherwise ... eh, not a major disappointment or anything but I came into it with a lot less expectation than all the hype probably was supposed to cause.

The kids and I talked about it over dinner, and I broke out the telescope and we got a really nice clear view with it. They were happy. Mission Accomplished.

Exactly. Although I paid no attention to any of it, other than I kept getting bombarded with news stories about it, which is what made me check it out. I've seen brighter moons, many of which completely light up our backyard. If I hadn't seen the hype, there's no way I would have known it was supposed to be a big deal.

I don't know if this is a common occurrence on the Atlantic Ocean, but I was on the beach at Ocean City once as it was getting dark. When I turned around the moon coming up over the horizon was so huge that it was one of the more startling things I've ever seen. At first it looked a 1000 foot tall orange glowing sailboat before the realization kicked in that it was the moon. Even thinking of it now gives me an awed feeling.

It's a fairly common occurrence when the moon is on the horizon. Only a few times a year does the moon rise full, on the horizon, after sunset. When it does it's the moon looks much bigger because of the frame of reference that the earth gives it. It's the moon's size relative to the size of things that we see in everyday that gives the feeling of hugeness. When it's full in the sky there is no frame other than the stars.
