Church and Schneider, what more could you ask for?

I actually like both of them, but I've gotta stick behind who we have this year. Schneider may not be able to hit, but he's among the top defensive catchers. Ryan, well... He has had his ups and downs. But the city generally liked him.

That play Schneider made on that (extremely) stupid throw by Castillo, hustling to back-up first, seeing the ball rolling into the dugout, jumping into the dugout and knocking the ball back onto the field before it went in...convinced me, in less than one game, that this was a good deal.

That got a good laugh out of me.

Well, don't know about the rest of you, but I am pretty excited about Pedro's start tomorrow. I think a lot of this season will depend greatly on how well both Pedro and Delgado perform.

I was listening to the FAN today and I thought I heard a rumor of the Mets interested in Lofton? This thought crossed my mind a long time ago but I figured if they were interested, it would have been done by now. A move like that really wouldn't make sense to me bc obviously Alou will take over in LF when he's healthy, and I'm assuming they didn't trade for Church if they could have just signed Lofton as a FA.

I like them too, and I think we got good value in that deal as well as filling a couple of needs. But I just think when you get the chance to grab a top notch starter who's under 28 for a prospect, you jump on it. And I wish they would have...and tried to address the C & OF positions in the offseason.

Granted...Willis didnt have a top notch year last season...but at 26 I'm betting last season is/was an aberration...and he'll be back to very good or, possibly, great in the coming years.

I still doubt the Marlins would have traded Willis to the Mets...

Let's hope Pedro's 12 pitch at-bat isn't the best part of this game.

As I type this...HR Luis Gonzalez.

Willis wasn't that great in 2006 either. Since his great 2005 season, his numbers have been falling, especially his K/BB (even though his innings pitched have gone down, his walks have increased by a good amount from 2005). He's also been giving up more HRs every year from 2005.

I told you. I've been watching this guy play for three years. At the plate he's horroundous, but he's a catcher. Behind the plate he's lights out most of the time.

I'd rather be embarrassed and have 2 titles in 11 years to show for it. Embarrass me all you want. It's been 28 years since the Phillies won their only title, and 22 since the last time the mets won.

And they did what I thought was the impossible. New stadium with retractable roof set to open in 2011.

Not worried at all about his 85 mph cheese, like Logan said, it's all about his command. I am, however, very worried about his hamstring.

Did you happen to notice the gun hit 90 a couple of times? The SNY announcers even mentioned how angry and hard he seemed to be throwing because of the first inning homerun. He can toss it when he wants/needs to. That's how he throws now. Santana does the same in dialing it up 3 or 4 mph when he wants to.

And he also hits 80 on his fastballs a couple of times a game. He's averaged around 85 during his time as a Met, with good results overall. Speed isn't his game anymore. What's your point?

So Ryan Church starts out the game by playing a ball perfectly off the RF wall and making a perfect throw on a fly to 2nd to nab Hanley Ramirez, and then hits a 2-run HR off a lefty in the next inning.

Not too bad so far, these Nationals.

I meant to quote the other guy, obviously I agree with you.

Hopefully Church continue to stay in there against lefties like that all year.

I know it took a perfect relay, but why send Wright home with no outs against a struggling pitcher

Good question. The Mets seem to historically be aggressive around third.

That was an absolute bomb. Tough couple games for Wright with that that shot he hit yesterday staying in the yard.

Edit: 2-run HR for Beltran. He and Wright are smoking the ball.

I mean why let the guy closest to the ball make the call. And I guess Beltran hits the ball so hard that when it hits the top of a padded fence it goes 20 feet in the air back towards the field

Since this game is in hand, I went back and re-read this thread just for laughs. Not DaddyTorgo's finest moment :

Well, let the talks begin....who do you think they will go after to replace Pedro? Keep it in house or go out and sign somebody?? I keep hearing Vargas as a possibility. I know Freddy Garcia had a terrible season last yr, and I have no clue what his status is, if he was/is injured that is, but I would say he's worth giving a look at.

I think they'll stand pat unless it becomes clear that he'll miss even more time than anticipated. Their offense can keep the difference between Pedro and Figueroa/Vargas/Sosa/whoever over the 8 or so starts he would miss to probably a two game swing.

They don't need another starter until the 12th. They'll probably just ride this out.

Freddy Garcia is supposed to be out until late may/early june timeframe.
