I thought it was a hot air ballon at first. A man-made saucer?

Better title would have been.

"what better child stuck in well or child stuck in balloon?"

--there I edited the title!

Are you familiar with 9.8 m/sē?

That's a lotta six-year-old splat if you don't have something to slow him down before you catch him.

Well it's not going to fall down immediately. The helium would slowly escape from a small hole...

Then use a giant ladder to catch him before he falls too far. Or a giant net to contain him?

Are you even allowed to build something like this (in private)? Could the parents could be in trouble for building this thing?

Yeah it's perfectly legal most likely, just like a weather balloon, a very large weather balloon.

The problem is, what are you going to use to get close enough that you're going to be able to hit the balloon with something of low enough caliber to only cause a leak?

He's moving something like 60mph, if I just heard the guy on the video correctly, and the balloon is going to be subject to changes in the wind. That's going to make it a challenge for any sniper (although I bet you there ain't a sniper worth his salt wouldn't be up for the challenge). Nothing you could get off the ground from the Air Force base in Fort Collins is going to be able to maintain altitude at that relatively slow speed, so you can't even just line something up behind the balloon to shoot it.

And even if you could, you'd cause more than just one hole.

I just don't see a good way you can shoot that balloon without splat.

It's really not even about what you catch him with.

Y'ever hit the water off a diving board in a belly flop?

Now increase that height from 60 feet to 6,000 feet. If you're falling unrestrained, bad shit happens.

But even above and beyond that, you have to be able to accurately predict where he's going to land within a reasonable size if you want the net to work, AND you're going to have to be able to set it up in such a way that the momentum of his impact doesn't just dash him against the ground anyway.

From CNN -

Officials are trying to rescue a 6-year-old boy who climbed into a balloon-like experimental aircraft built by his parents and floated into the sky over eastern Colorado.

The aluminum-covered, dome-shaped balloon is 20 feet long and 5 feet high, Larimer County Sheriff's Office says.

Margie Martinez of the Weld County Sheriff's Office said a sibling saw the boy climb into the basket before the balloon took off. Since the door on the balloon was unlocked, Martinez said it's possible the boy had fallen out.

The balloon appeared to be a saucer-shaped, Mylar-coated helium balloon, not unlike a party balloon. The craft was drifting eastward, authorities said.

The helium balloon was tethered to the boy's family home in Fort Collins, the Larimer County Sheriff's Department said. The boy got into the craft Thursday morning and undid the rope anchoring it.

The aluminum-covered, dome-shaped balloon is 20 feet long and 5 feet high, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said. Watch the balloon float thousands of feet over Colorado ŧ

"The structure at the bottom of the balloon that the boy is in is made of extremely thin plywood and won't withstand any kind of a crash at all," said Erik Nilsson, Larimer County Emergency Manager, according to CNN affiliate KMGH.

The Federal Aviation Administration is trying to track the aircraft on radar and has notified the Denver International Airport. Shortly after noon (2 p.m. ET), the balloon was sighted two miles south of Evans.

CNN meteorologist Chad Myers estimated the wind would keep the vessel moving at 30 mph. Authorities say the craft is about 7,000 feet above the ground.

Seriously, my money is on the older brother untying the ropes after the 6 y/o climbed in, went "oh shit" when it flew away like that, and went in and told his parents - little bro is flying away in the balloon - and then blamed it all on the kid to keep himself out of trouble.

It looked like this 20 minutes ago to, so don't take the current shape as deflation. It might be traveling faster which would make the look deflated on the lead edge, since it didn't appear full.

Well, the police are also on record as saying that the balloon is descending, which is in line with it losing helium.

I'm watching it on Headline and the reporters are just babbling what their assumptions are with no actual knowledge IMO.

Yep. That pretty much sounds like the coverage you get from Fox, CNN and the rest of the 24 hour news stations on pretty much anything and everything.
