How about if you were on a sinking ship? Are you against the "Women and Children First" rule?
I look at it this way, if my child or my wife gets raped I want the fucker that does it to rot in jail for the maximum penalty, but I don't think that said penalty should be less just because it was my wife instead of my kid.

As for women and children first, I think it's a much different situation and is like comparing apples to oranges.

Right but all those laws should be consolidated into one, if you rape someone you rot in jail for X amount of years, a rape is a rape regardless who it is against. Just like a hate crime, why are the rules changed if it comes out that it was based on raced, etc, you should be doing the max time regardless of the reason. I guess I just look at the world differently.

I wish I had the parents phone number, I'd call them and blast "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains.

The people of Colorado should burn down city hall if they don't make these jackasses pay for all the wasted labor on this. And CPS should be seizing the kids.

If the parents knowingly perpetuated the idea that the kid was in/around/hanging from the balloon, then they should be tied to balloons and let go.

This was about why we view people differently, not necessarily about if someone should be given a bigger penalty for a crime. You stated that this should be no more tragic if it was a 5 year old boy or a 70 year old man. You seemed to think that viewing those two deaths differently is bad.

I'm just saying it's natural to view these events differently. When I hear about a 90 year old man dying from cancer, it's sad. But I find it sadder when I hear that a 7 year old boy died from it. Age, innocence, and other factors will always play a role in our level of sympathy. If there are two people drowning, one being a child and one being an adult, I go to the child first.

Once again comparing apples to oranges. Acts of violence and crimes towards others are different then general views of people dying.

Then lets use this exact situation. Would you feel different if the child died vs his father?

Not really, since in either scenario I would think the father was a moron for having something like that in easy access to the child without supervision, and would have thought the guy was an idiot if he did it himself and died.

You know, just because some of us place a child's life (I would be in that group) and a child's welfare above that of an adult's, does not mean every reasonable person feels that way. If someone used their personal moral guidelines to single me out, I might curse and then apologize later too. I am sure Ben or anyone else here might as well. Hard to understand the boxing.

Regardless, I like me some thread about boxes.

Watching this interview on Larry King with the family and I'm sorry, but it just doesn't add up. The kids seem real obnoxious and the parents are milking it for the cameras. They asked why he hid in the box and he seemed to say "For the show" which doesn't make sense.

Lot of other things too:

- You had the most traumatic 3-4 hours of your life and you compose yourself to go on Larry King a few hours later?

- Aren't you fucking embarrased? I mean you caused a massive search, delayed flights, and used up countless resources because your kid was hiding from you in your home. Shouldn't you apologize and go away for awhile?

- Their whole background is fishy and they seem to really like the media attention.

- From what some people are saying, there is no way the balloon could have held that kid and gotten that high. Just wasn't big or powerful enough.

- Ton of misinformation on a basket falling. Couldn't you just ask the Father if the thing had a basket on it that could fall off? I mean they were searching for an hour or two for a basket that they believed had fallen off the balloon.

Whole thing doesn't add up. I'm calling hoax and these idiots will be angling for a reality show in a couple days.

It's like watching a trainwreck on TV. I have to admit it's great TV. First the kid screws them over by saying it was done for the show (video below). Later on Wolf Blitzer asks him to ask the kid why he said that and the Father got real flustered, wouldn't ask his son the question and is totally stumbling.

Essentially, the kid blew their cover. Parents should be charged, have their kids taken from them, and be forced to pay up for the costs. Sick of this fucking reality show shit and dipshits doing everything for attention.

The parents should be locked up, lose the kids and have to pay fines out their asshole for the rest of their life if this is a publicity stunt (and I'm betting it turns out to be that with the facts we know so far). What if the balloon comes down in a river and somebody drowns trying to save the kid? Or an EMT/police car rushing to the scene crashes and somebody is killed?
