So it begins...
Dallas trades defenseman Nick Grossman to Philly for a 2nd round pick in 2012 and a 3rd round pick in 2013. Not a bad deal. I've always felt like Grossman was a pretty decent defender. Not flashy, but he has some size. A good move by Philly to upgrade the defense.

Holmgrem couldn't handle holding a 2nd round pick.
Another trade : Dom Moore to SJ for 2nd

This is Dom Moore's 9th NHL team, reaching nearly Mike Sillinger levels. But, being an active player, seemed more likely he had a connection to all teams. So, 2 degrees of Dominic Moore Buffalo -- Pominville Boston -- Pouliot Toronto -- Grabovski Montreal -- Kaberle Ottawa -- Gonchar NYI -- Eaton NYR -- Lundqvist NJD -- Foster Philadelphia -- Jagr Pittsburgh -- Malkin Florida -- Weiss Tampa Bay -- Lecavalier Washington -- Hamrlik Carolina -- Spacek Winnipeg -- Antropov Detroit -- White Columbus -- Tyutin Nashville -- Kostitsyn St Louis -- Steen Chicago -- Mayers Vancouver -- Booth Calgary -- Stajan Edmonton -- Whitney Minnesota -- Backstrom Colorado -- O'Byrne LA -- Scuderi Anaheim -- Blake Dallas -- Dvorak Phoenix -- Rozsival San Jose -- Burns

Canadiens get forwards Blake Geoffrion and Robert Slaney, and 2nd round pick in 2012 from Nashville for defensemen Hal Gill and a conditional 5th round pick in 2013.

Wouldn't have minded Gill in Detroit. He is a limited 6th defenseman but he always brings it in the playoffs and is one of the best PK'ers in the league.
Hoping we add Moen and/or Gaustad, though the price on Gaustad will be pretty high after that Moore deal. |

Cool that there will be a CH 'Geoffrion' jersey again, 60 years later. Penguins were rumored in on the Gill sweepstakes. Proof of inflation: In 2009, Pens gave up a 2nd and 5th to Toronto, while Gill had a year remaining on his contract In 2012, Preds give up 2 prospects + 2nd for expiring deal. Quote:
As you probably remember well, when interference isn't called in the playoffs, Gill is at his best.

Jack Johnson could be available according to LeBrun. Would cost a pretty penny, especially with only a 4.3 mil cap hit. Would love for Detroit to take a run at him, especially with Stuart likely leaving in FA. It would still allow us to pursue Suter as well.

That's a hell of a lot for Hal Gill, but it's the right idea for Nashville. See if you can't put together a deep run with arguably the best defence in the league and a top goalie. I think the only chance they have of keeping Suter and Weber together is convincing them that they are willing to spend and make bold moves to win

Every year now since he was acquired from Carolina now, I see this same rumor that Jack Johnson is available, both at the TD and in the summer. Always makes me wonder why he is always being made available. And also why he doesn't ever end up being dealt.

He's always available because he's not that good and not worth the $$$ and he's not moved for the same reason. Possibly the most overrated player in the league IMO

Johnson is insanely talented but needs a change of scenery in the worst way. He would flourish in a structured place like Detroit. He has been allowed to play a very lax defensive game by LA forever now.

Wings win #22 in a row at home with 5 seconds left. Wings are in a stretch of 11 of 14 at home.

Today's Pens-Flyers game was the biggest clusterfuck of officiating ever. Stephane Auger should be publicly humiliated. At the end of the 2nd, there had 10 penalties called...all by Auger. He was making makeup calls on his own prior calls.

Reading at HF, Flyers were already at 50 contracts prior to this. Something else in the works? Also, the draft is in Pittsburgh this summer. Philly doing their best to avoid having to even come to Pittsburgh.

Penguins Re-Sign Forward James Neal to a Six-Year Contract Extension - Pittsburgh Penguins - News
6 years, $5M per. May have saved themselves about a million a year long term. He is the perfect winger for Malkin, will score near 40 every year of this deal.

Learned something new: apparently Toronto has their own clock that isn't necessarily synced with the arena clock. A Rangers goal at 0.1 is disallowed.

That makes zero sense...therefore totally likely the NHL does this.
How can anyone suggest an offsite clock is correct? Didn't the Rangers win a game at :00.1 earlier this year?

Wow, that's some Caribbean FIFA shit going on there. "We have our own clock and that goal was totally no good". That doesn't even make any sense if the refs are going off the arena clock. That HAS to be false.
Let's hope nothing like that ever happens in a playoff game. Even David Stern thinks this sounds shady. |

They ended up showing what Toronto sent over, showing the clock at full zeros with the puck on the line. It's fine, I'm not claiming a conspiracy but it just makes the NHL look terrible. There's no reason for everything to not be synced.
My bigger issue with this one in particular is that the NHL's over the net view was definitely more behind the net than what the networks have. I could see that being a problem down the line. Will post that pic when I can. And yeah, Rangers beat Phoenix on a goal with 0.1 left a couple months ago. |

That should make the Caps sellers.
Knuble, Semin, Vokoun(unless they can resign him) should all go. I'd add Green, but he wouldn't fetch anything now, so they might as well hold on to him and see if he can still be an offensive power.

Colorado trades Kyle Quincey to Tampa for Stevie Downie. Tampa then flips Quincey to Detroit for a 1st and a below average prospect (Piche)
I assume Quincey gets resigned here and acts as Brad Stuart's replacement. |

I know it's going to be a low first round pick, but that seems a bit steep for Kyle Quincey. Still, the Wings needed help on defense. The Ericsson-Kindl pairing has had many, many a brutal shift this year. Depth is also key given the inevitible injuries that occur during the playoffs. Quincey can also play on the PP. They've had Hudler on the point at times. A bit of a steep price, but the Wings need to go for it. Lidstrom can retire at any moment. Stuart is likely gone after this season for family reasons.

Don't like the deal for TB. A pick ranging from 28-30 for Downie is not enough given this market. I assume Stevie is setting up for a run at Schenider.

Not a fan at all and will not miss all the lazy penalties. that being said, Detroit might be a good fit for him if he can fit in (and if he isn't still pissed about that whole ring thing)

NHL Tonight speculated targeting RFAs. Tampa has 2 1sts and possibly 4 2nds (FLA pick is either '12 or '13). They suggested going after Weber but can't see that. I wish more GMs went after RFAs, it's exciting. But understand why they don't.

Can you use other team's draft picks as compensation for a RFA or do you have to use your own? I think in the NFL, at least, it has to be your own picks. Not sure about the NHL.

You are correct about the NFL- has to be your pick, so if you traded yours away you can't even go after them. No clue about the NHL, but it seems like it would be smart to have this rule otherwise Team A picking in the top 10 wants to go after a RFA, trades that pick to another team to get a player, or more picks next year, and a very late 1st round pick- then go after the RFA |

I can still see the logic behind what SR is saying. Yzerman could be stock piling picks so that he can make a run at a RFA and still have at least one first and a handful of second rounders to draft with.

Correct, it must be their own picks.
I think it was more of pointing out that they could poach Weber for the tender of 4 1sts, but have additional picks this year

Say they offer Weber $8M a year. That's 4 1sts. Sure, they are giving up a top 10 pick (likely) this year, but still would have Wings 1st (#29, after losing to the Pens in the finals ), and could try to use the 4 2nds they have to obtain an additional 1st in 2013. In 2013, again, giving up their 1st, but have the additional 1st. By 2014, they plan on contending with Stamkos+Weber, and the 2014 and 2015 1sts they lose they hope are in the late 20's, or #30.

Given that Steve Yzerman earned his degree at the Ken Holland School of General Managing, I would be very surprised if he tried to land a big name RFA. Holland has (rightly in my mind) commented many times about how that never works out and how it's a big mistake to try to pull off. That type of move just never makes a lot of sense for many reasons. Besides, the way the whole Weber thing is going to work out is that he will sign 1 more year with Nashville next year, Lidstrom will come back for his last year to play in the Winter Classic and then he'll retire, Weber will be a UFA and the Wings will sign him to a nice long-term deal to be their #1 defenseman for the future. So, you're 2013-14 Wings defense will look like this: Weber-White Quincey-Kronwall Ericsson-Smith
