OMFG

Was he the only relief pitcher on the team. He pitched enough for three years. I am pretty sure no one will ever break that loss record.

I confused the FOOL and FOOLX schedule the day before the playoffs. To organize myself, I put guys that I am not re-signing in minor leagues. I played with about 17 guys accidentally last season. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but that's why the numbers are so off.

The best thing is, he's going to be a pretty good pitcher!
Now would be a good time to sign him to that 10 year contract!!

Heh... didn't think I would sign Yates, Greer AND Inman. My infield is rather crowded now.

Yeah, sorry about that Afino. We have all done that before, and it really sucks.

Unfortunately, I love Greer's defense at SS, so I am going to need to keep him around. Besides, he can't be traded for a year anyway.

I don't believe Teach tanked. She admitted to her mistake. Tanking is kinda a word we shouldn't throw around.

BTW, if it wasn't a serious accusation that I take back what I said

I was joking as well. Stuff like what happened to her does happen and I doubt she would ever do anything like that in a million years.

The talk that is going on I wanted to say.....

I don't think Teach tanked here but I wish everyone put the best team on the field they possibly could every year. If everyone played with the best team they could every year these leagues would be that much better. Myself I can't stand being under .500 ever. I get so upset with myself if I don't put the best team I can on the field each and every season.

NOTE: This is not intended for anyone directly. Its a thought I've had for a while now.

I would agree with Hyde for the most part. It is possible to field a .500 team on most occasions in FOOL. Although I have found that over the last (oh say 20 years) it is very difficult to keep a team together. Mostly because players seem to want to sign ridiculous extensions, but then take less in FA.

I believe that without the ability to truly develop a farm system in OOTP, there is little an owner can do to rebuild without finishing near the bottom, though in reality, as much as I like OOTP and FOOL, life happens and exports get missed, and when they do, bad stuff team wise tends to happen. I think one only has to look at the body of an owners contributions to determine the real truth.

This year is a ridiculous draft year. The great thing is the randomness that can be the FOOL/OOTP draft. Some years number 1 gets you the future star or ace and other years (like last season) you get the choice of mediocrity. Just luck of the draw.

Apparently I wanted to write a thesis on the ethics of OOTP. Good luck in day 2 of Free Agency and the Draft tomorrow all.

I'm sorry to use the word "tank". You're right, that was unnecessary in this situation.

Sorry Teach!

Maybe you have the amazing skills to put together a fantastic team every year, but there are years (clearly not years like this that I just simply had an idiot moment) when I just planned my budget all wrong or my talent got old and died or someone bought all the good FA's, or some other series of misfortunes that keeps my team down for years in a row. That's not to say I don't try on those years, but it probably doesn't look like it! I don't think there's a single owner that doesn't try in this league, but strategy is strategy and I don't think the game is any less fun or someone has any less integrity for going for draft picks when they know that this is definitely not their year. I don't have enough forethought to do that, but if someone else does, more power to them!

Im talking when people have prospects sitting in AAA ready. Sometimes you are going to lose for sure. Prospects sitting ready to play is a different thing. Waiting for your team to arrive is a different. If you have a plan to just lose is what I was meaning. Even thinking this guy might not be quite ready is fine. This wasn't to you Teach. If I had a problem with something you did I'd tell you personally, errors happen.

EDIT: FTR The 1st message I had written was in total defense of you. Afino apologized to you so I changed it. Since that message he apologized again so I think he used tanking wrong is all. That message I had ready was a full defend Teach mode and show why you weren't here. So I changed that thought to be more broad.

I didn't feel personally attacked. I was just sharing that I'm fine with how people strategize to win the game, even if it's not the same strategy that I employ.

I don't think there's a single owner that doesn't try in this league, but strategy is strategy and I don't think the game is any less fun or someone has any less integrity for going for draft picks when they know that this is definitely not their year. I don't have enough forethought to do that, but if someone else does, more power to them!

People play the game with different goals. To some, winning championships is most important, To others having the best career winning percentage is most important. Both are right.
I would say I am a 75% Championship/ 25% career record kinda guy. Meaning I have no issues stripping a team down that is not competative to clear cap, get a solid draft pick and protected 1st round picks. I do my best to have one and done rebuilds, and avoid prolonged basement chasing, because my career record is still important to me...just not as much as Championships.

That said, I ALWAYS play the best team I have...but I do not nessecarily aquire the best players possible in FA or trades if I know I am more then 1 player away from competing.
I have also been known to experiment in my non-competative years. Like one year I attempted a 2 man rotation, along with a 12 man bullpen. It was an experiment that failed miserably (made worse by a less then stellar team), but there was logic to the experiment in that having 2 stud SP's pitch 3 or 4 innings every other day and then a decent bullpen eat up the rest of the innings would compensate for me having absolutly brutal 3rd,4th&5th starters...but that just didn't work.
I've pretty much tried everything I can think of to experiment with though. So I think those days are past. Some things have worked...and some didn't.
Moral of the story...I always play my best lineup, but I will not hesitate for a second if I have a 4th place team to deal all my vets for prospects and start over.

My goal back in the dark ages when I actually played OOTP each season was to get into the playoffs. OOTP playoffs seem so random that as long as I made the playoffs I felt I had a shot at something bigger each year.

Any season that I did not make the playoffs, I was devastated. For me, rebuilding meant to look at the Free Agent market and see what I could do with what was out there.

Not taking anything away from anyone else in the league as we have had some incredibly great owners over the years, but I have stated before that the owner that has most impressed me over the history of the FOOL leagues is Tasan as I personally feel the way he plays is the closest to what I always tried to achieve year in and year out.

Eric I agree that its perfectly fine to go about it the way you state. Rebuilding is fine and gutting a team and trading for youth is fine. You said the key thing to me and that's you field the best team you can. You also seem to spend your money most of the time. I notice some people try to spend on one year deals at the least and you are one of those. If that's TMI I apologize.

I try to win every year. Of course, I usually have somewhat of a plan in place to keep it going, where I'll always have the current starter's replacement already developing in my system if possible. But I always look to the free agent market to fill holes and look to spend my money and try to win every year.

I like it when my winning percentage is good, but it's not a primary concern of mine. I am only concerned with championships first and foremost, and to a lesser extent, making it to the playoffs every year.

Oh Tasan. I will catch your winning percentage (I wish). Lion WPCT .535 Legends WPCT .525, granted Tasan has been at it for 50 or so more years, and deserves more accolades than he has received in terms of championships (9).

I agree with Alan.

Championships are great when you get them, but it seems (for me) that I win when I least expect it, and my great teams usually fall short. Each year I want to make the playoffs, as my goal (save a few seasons) is to have as many X's in a row, on the history page as possible.

...Sheepishly, I have no problem with teams rebuilding because A) Less teams bidding for the FA's that I want B) easier schedule (More F teams)...all that being said, this bantar about "Tank" is funny, because I thought last season in FOOL X was one of the best ever. Every team had a legitimate shot at the playoffs.

This discussion got me looking at the manager leader board, and I noticed that ekcut has never finished in 8th place. I can't remember if FOOL-X has always had 16 teams or not, but 52 seasons is a long time to never finish in last place. Congratulations ekcut on never being the worst team

Thanks. To be honest I am surprised at that..I must of had several 7th place finished though.

I did finish 6th back in my 1st stint as Bishops GM. We were a 12 team league back then. We could of had 30 teams that year and i still would have finished last.

Keep at it matt, you might make it there some day!

I've tried to make myself tank, but I just can't ever do it. I have to put the best I can out there every year, even to the extent of reaching hard for a so-so player right before the season to try to upgrade a small deficiency. I hate finishing in last place. I'm jealous of ekcut! I think I had something like that going at one point, but I don't remember and I'm too lazy to check.

I remember one year that we finished really badly I simply forgot to set my lineup/depth chart. I set literally everything else in my organization, every level, for batting and pitching EXCEPT for my big league lineup. That was awful.

And then a couple of years ago, I expected to make the playoffs (I think we rated a B too!) and we lost 96 games.

I can't "tank" either. When we lose, it's mostly on accident
