Palmeiro Launches Number 700
Sunday, April 13th, 2059: 700 home runs is a lot of home runs to hit. It's a number that very few players reach. Today Héctor Palmeiro became a member of that exclusive club. He belted it at Legends Stadium against the Legends. But sometimes milestone homers don't win the game. The powerful Cleveland first baseman got all the headlines, but New York came away with the victory. They beat the Naps 6-5.

During the postgame interview he told the press, "It's a big relief to get it over. I tried not to think about it, but it's kind of hard when you have a huge sign on the scoreboard staring at you every time you step up to the plate. The home run was nice, but I would have preferred to win the game."

His batting totals for the game showed 2 hits in 3 at-bats, 2 home runs and 2 runs batted in.

The hardworking and dedicated Palmeiro also said, "I'll celebrate a little with my family tonight but not too much. This is not the last home run I will hit. I think I have a lot baseball left in me and have other goals. I'll get back to work tomorrow."

In his career Palmeiro has racked up 2666 hits with a .233 average and .304 on-base percentage. His numbers include 628 doubles, 51 triples, and 700 home runs, along with 1693 runs scored and 2163 RBIs.

Coates Touches All the Bases, Hits for Cycle
Wednesday, April 16th, 2059: Cordell Coates stole the headlines today by hitting for the cycle in the New York 10-2 win over the Waikiki Beach Boys. His 4 hits got the Legends offense going and his 5 runs batted in and 2 runs scored helped to seal the verdict.

Cordell Coates flied out in the 1st, hit a GRAND SLAM off Will Roberts in the 2nd, grounded out in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI triple in the 9th.

This season Coates is swinging the bat at a .343 rate with 12 hits in 35 at-bats. To date he has hit 1 home run, scored 4 runs and driven in 7.

Cleveland Starter Named RL's #1 Pitcher
Thursday, May 1st, 2059: An outstanding 3-1 record in April earned Frank Hepburn the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Republic League. When his name was penciled in to start on the Cleveland lineup card, it meant trouble for opposing teams.

In 36.1 innings of work, Hepburn limited opposing batters to 24 base hits and a .189 batting average. He notched 30 strikeouts, issued 12 walks and had a 1.49 ERA.

Bishops Núñez April's #1 Pitcher
Thursday, May 1st, 2059: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, José Núñez still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 33-year-old starter for London was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 32 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 2.12 ERA in 34 innings of work.

WOW. I wonder how many more he would have hit in his career if he would have hit for a better average. Still an amazing feat.

RL Choice for Batter of the Month is Ruíz
Thursday, May 1st, 2059: Raúl Ruíz battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Ruíz told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 18 games, Ruíz hit .426 with 3 home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 14 runs.

CL Top Batter Trophy Won by Ayers
Thursday, May 1st, 2059: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 29-year-old David Ayers put together a solid offensive month for London and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .341 with 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Thursday, May 1st, 2059: Stephano Gois's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Ann Arbor third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .356 with 7 doubles, no triples and 1 home run. Gois also scored 12 times and drove in 9 runs.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Thursday, May 1st, 2059: Jean-Pierre Bouffard earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Washington first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Bouffard hit .275 with 3 home runs, 4 RBIs and 5 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

To me the most amazing fact about his career is that he was given enough at bats to ever hit this many home runs! I would have canned him way way way way long ago.

When he was in his prime years, he still was a below average player in my opinion. I mean sure he hit 30 HR and 100 RBI every season between age 23 and age 36, but man there is more to this game than just hitting homers. He hit below .225 5 times during that stretch, including a whopping .199 at the age of 27 (when he should be entering his prime).

When you have an OBP of .257 for a season, you are just doing your team a huge disservice regardless of how many home runs you hit. It is amazing to me that he had a starting job the year after he had a -37 VORP. I don't have to explain exactly how bad that score is I hope, but yikes! His only other truly redeeming factor was that he did win quite a few Best Fielder awards at an important position (3B), but that doesn't always mean much when it comes to awards. He did actually have some fairly solid fielding seasons though.

I know this comes across pretty harsh, and I'm not Palmeiro's biggest fan (I didn't include him in my top 5 3B of all time for instance), but hitting this many Home runs is a huge feat for sure and quite amazing to watch his career.

Well McGwire had some pretty bad seasons, I think if I recall correctly that were injury related perhaps. But for the most part he -usually- hit somewhere between .265 and .300 though. With 80-100 Walks a season, that gives you a much more rounded player to go with those Home Runs. As an example, McGwire's career ERA+ was 162. Palmerio's in FOOL-X so far is a 102 (and I imagine that will drop further this season).

The most similar Major league player that i can recall seeing in person to Palmeiro would be Dave Kingman.

While on the subject of Palmeiro, an update after the first month..

Palmeiro hit .208 with 6 HR and 14 RBI in the month of April.

That ties him with Kien-lung Teng at 702 HR for his career and a share of the all time record!

RL #1 Pitcher in May is Las Vegas's Mooney
Sunday, June 1st, 2059: Doug Mooney's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in May, the 34-year-old Las Vegas hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 28 in 36 innings, logged an ERA of 2.00 and allowed opponents to hit .244 against him.

This year Mooney has compiled a 5-2 mark with a 4.39 ERA in 10 starts.

Terriers Rich May's Top Hurler
Sunday, June 1st, 2059: Kurt Rich hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Continental League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In May the Stafford starter earned a 4-0 mark in 6 starts. He threw 40.2 innings, struck out 29 and compiled a solid 1.77 ERA.

So far in 10 appearances this season, Rich has recorded 7 wins and sustained no losses. He has pitched 70 innings, yielded 50 hits, fanned 55 and has a 2.06 ERA.

The even better part is many people might not even remember but the record used to be 701 set by Ignacio Guerrero back in 1987. Teng broke that in 2013, and now Palmeiro in 2059!

Las Vegas Newcomer May's Best Rookie
Sunday, June 1st, 2059: A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Rob Holliday just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 22-year-old third baseman for Las Vegas hit .330 with 36 hits, 7 home runs and 26 runs batted in. He also logged 11 walks and compiled a .397 on-base percentage.

This season Holliday has 9 home runs and a .291 batting average.

Top Continental League Newcomer Named
Sunday, June 1st, 2059: Jean-Pierre Bouffard was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 24-year-old first baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen May's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 23 games Bouffard batted .343 for Washington, slapping 24 hits in 70 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 9 runs and scored 9 times.

RL Relief Ace Barraclough Named Best Hurler
Tuesday, July 1st, 2059: Doug Barraclough has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Legends bullpen ace collected 1 save and 18 strikeouts in 18 innings, holding the opposition to a .185 average and posting a 3.50 ERA and a 6-0 record.

To this point in the season, Barraclough has rung up 1 save in 40 relief appearances. He has also crafted a 4.07 ERA, 9 wins and 3 losses and 54 strikeouts in 48.2 innings.

I remember Estaban Franco was once the HR king.. and I seem to recall there was a race between Guerrero and Jose Sosa to see who would break it first. I don't remember if Sosa did break it first, but obviously Guerrero ended up on top for good.

I remember a week ago last night my wife and I went to a Japanese restaurant.. I remember that because it was our date night and it was the night the Tornadoes came through. We called the night short, skipping the movie and got home so the baby sitter could get home safely.

A week ago tonight is a little tougher for me... I remember Friday night last week we went out for Mexican with the whole family.. just don't remember last Thursday

Spring Shortstop Best Rookie
Friday, August 1st, 2059: António Durán is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In July the Spring hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .351 average with 39 hits, 1 home run and 17 RBIs.

So far this year in 102 games Durán is hitting .318 with 3 home runs, 54 RBIs and 71 runs scored.

Meyers Earns CL Rookie of Month
Friday, August 1st, 2059: Tom Meyers of the Havana Banana Sluggers captured the Rookie of the Month honors for July in the Continental League.

Posting a .253 average last month, he collected 21 hits, 4 home runs, 15 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

This year Meyers is hitting .238 with 8 home runs and 36 RBIs in 97 games played. He also boasts an OBP of .331 with 45 walks and 52 runs scored.

I live in Central Mass, about 10 min from Sturbridge. My two oldest daughters and ex-wife live 3 minutes from Springfield. (The reason I found out about the tornadoes was my oldest daughter called me and told me to get home).

Edit: We didn't have any tornado damage at my house, just alot of wind and lightning. There was one tornado that went about 5 miles south of my house that we were afraid would swing up to my town, but ended up cutting directly across to Upton instead. But better safe than sorry (especially since we were at a shopping area near where one did touch down)

I grew up in the South, so had experience with Tornadoes before, both when I lived in Georgia and in Texas. So I knew what to do and it wasn't a panic for me, but very rare to see that up in this part. I hadn't seen any tornadoes here since I moved here in the late 1990s.
