Red-Hot Acosta Cools off Chico
Tuesday, April 7th, 2116: "That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," the Rancheros manager told reporters after today's game.

The Rebels ran into a buzzsaw as Jorge Acosta cut them down to size 4-0 with a 2-hit shutout.

His skipper added, "He knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."

In the complete game whitewash the Colorado hurler doled out no walks and registered 3 strikeouts.

In the postgame press conference his catcher said, "Jorge goes out there and just goes about his business. I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. You can call any pitch and you know where he's going to be."

Acosta also got some praise from the Chico manager.

"He really kept us in check today. Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away... we took some pathetic swings."

Relief Star Wins RL Top Pitcher Honors
Friday, May 1st, 2116: Manny Vázquez has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Rebels bullpen ace collected 7 saves and 11 strikeouts in 13.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .250 average and posting a 2.03 ERA and a 4-0 record.

Urbina Nabs CL #1 Pitcher Award
Friday, May 1st, 2116: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Pedro Urbina still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 25-year-old starter for Napa Valley was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 36 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 3.35 ERA in 43 innings of work.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Friday, May 1st, 2116: Youngster Juan Suárez emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Toronto deserved the honor, batting .255 with no home runs and 5 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Suárez enjoy the limelight.

Rookie Reaps Reward This Month

Friday, May 1st, 2116: Almost everyone agreed -- fans, teammates, peers -- and BNN sportwriters, too -- that Chee-hwa Foong was worthy of the Continental League Rookie of the Month award.

In the month of April the Noblesville second baseman was a bigtime threat. The 26-year-old Noblesville second baseman played in 27 games and hit .301 with 7 doubles, no triples and no home runs. Foong also scored 19 times and drove in 6 runs.

Hartford Defeats Ann Arbor 5-4, Molina Nabs 500th Save
Tuesday, May 12th, 2116: Harpooners closer Carlos Molina has faced many pressure situations, but rarely does the pressure affect him. Today was no different in a 5-4 Hartford victory as the 36-year-old pitcher registered a historic milestone - his 500th save of his career. "We feel that a lead is in good hands whenever Carlos gets the ball," one of his teammates said after the game. Molina reached the 500-save plateau by holding the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines to 1 run and 1 hit in 1 innings of work.

So far in his career Molina has appeared in 930 games and saved 500 games. His lifetime record is 67-60 with 902 strikeouts and 255 walks in 990.1 innings and his ERA stands at 2.42.

Republic League #1 Hurler is Jordan
Wednesday, July 1st, 2116: Brit Jordan left little doubt in the minds of Republic League officials that he should be named June's Pitcher of the Month for his outstanding performance.

"I wasn't always confident at the start of a game," said Jordan. "Sometimes it's hard to get into the flow -- the calls aren't going your way or you're trying to spot your pitches too much. You just have to relax and use what you've been taught all your life -- get back to basics -- good mechanics, control, location, keep the ball down."

The 30-year-old tossed 39.1 innings of quality baseball -- going 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA and 23 strikeouts.

This season Jordan has compiled a 11-4 mark with a 2.84 ERA.

Guiney Snags CL Top Hurler Trophy

Wednesday, July 1st, 2116: In June when the Halifax manager wrote the name "Guiney" on the lineup card, he knew he had a good shot at winning. Start after start in the month, Roland Guiney took the hill, took charge and usually got the win.

He dominated with a 5-0 mark and 0.77 ERA in 5 starts. The gifted Winter Wolves star pitched 35 innings, fanned 20 and held opposing teams to a .203 average.

For his outstanding mound performance Guiney was named the CL Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

In pitching stats this season Guiney has rung up 9 wins and 4 losses in 16 games. He has an ERA of 2.94 and has fanned 53 batters in 107 innings.

López on Fire: 6-6 for Chico
Saturday, July 4th, 2116: "Ever since I picked up my first bat my coaches were always saying to keep your eye on the ball, don't overswing... just make contact and ya never know what'll happen," Chico's Luis López told reporters after the game. "That's all I did today. I made contact and it turned out well."

It definitely turned out well for López today as he collected 6 hits in 6 at-bats against Colorado. It turned out well for his team, too, as the Rebels knocked off the Rancheros 5-4 at Rebels Ballpark.

L. López hit an RBI double in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, doubled in the 9th and singled in the 11th.

López is batting .304 with 8 home runs and 42 RBIs this season.

Rincon was another nice player I had but he got to expensive and OF was a strength at the time. He was expandable and it hurt a little bit letting him go.

Beacher Twirls No-Hitter Against Chico
Friday, August 28th, 2116: "Lyndon Beacher was just plain nasty on the mound today," according to his batterymate and quite a few of the Chico Rebels after the Toronto hurler fired a 2-0 no-hitter.

The Rebels were powerless against him. "It is what we call in baseball 'filthy'... his stuff was just too much for us today," the losing manager told reporters after the game."

In an overpowering performance Beacher faced 28 batters in all and finish the game with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.

"After the first couple of innings, I knew I had some good stuff going," Beacher said. "In the bullpen, it really wasn't that good, to be honest. But when I got out on the mound and flipped the switch, I had some pretty good stuff. I had a good fastball with control and I was able to throw my breaking ball and changeup for strikes."

This year Beacher has 15 wins and 3 losses and a 2.86 ERA.

Beacher's no-hitter was the first for Toronto in 19 seasons. Ironically enough, Toronto's last no-hitter was also against Chico.
