we dropped to $3.99 today at work.

+ and premium are $4.15 and $4.25 which makes no fucking sense but I'm not the owner so I don't set the price

You know, wouldn;t it just make better sense to produce a single qulity of gasoline?

87 octane is shit, 89 isn't much better, so why not simply make all the gasoline into high test?

I'm hearing non-confirmed reports of various gasoline price spikes across the country? Apparently due to the refinery capacity not being very high right now. Is anyone seeing this? I did notice a few OHIO stations were up 20-30 cents this week. And yet other stations were around the 3.49 mark.

In other news, Oil's flirting with 100 dollars a barrel right now.

That's less than 30 cents per gallon. I know that's a spike, but I'm hearing about 1+ dollar spikes in some areas.

Rumor around here is that it is supposed to shoot up to over $4 here this evening. That would be about a $0.50 jump.

I got gas yesterday afternoon for 3.40. Right now around the corner, its 3.90, so .50 in 12 hours.

My mom said that she passed gas stations in Columbia, SC that were 4.80, even though they were 3.60 yesterday.

My wife went to Charleston this weekend, and the dad of one of the girls she's going with owns a gas station. His is now over $4 and he said he won't get a new shipment until the end of next week.

Its part fearmongering, part stupidity as to the jump... and just as oil prices were plummeting...

Prices had been "down" this week here in the $3.20ish range and I noticed today some 3.79s and the like popping up.

I just went to the store. I bought gas yesterday off base for $3.65. The same gas station had regular unleaded for $4.21 and had a police presence to direct traffic. There are lines at every gas station and several have already run out of gas. Ought to be an interesting weekend.

Good thing I did my monthly fill-up last night ($3.56, the lowest it's been in a while). Didn't even see what it was today.

I keep hearing stories about 5 dollar gas, but I've yet to see any pictures or video. Is this a fast spreading urban myth?

I wouldn't be surprised. I heard on the radio a station was selling for $5.49 I think down in Fayetteville. Stations around here are at or over $4. I put some gas in yesterday unaware of the spike at it was $3.69 at that time, so this has been a spike of probably 40-50 cents in 24 hours. We're in good shape for the weekend, though, so we'll see how it plays out into early next week.

You can use Gasbuddy to track gas prices. Here's my area. This, however, goes against this article. I was at work when the Sam's Club gas station got flooded, aka down the street a long ways, with people and I was thinking, "You know, my gas light is on and I wonder if there is even going to be gas left by the time I get out." There was and it was for $3.92. By tomorrow, who knows.

Gas jumped thirty cents between the times I went to work and when I got off of work yesterday. I filled up then, but I'm still scared to see what prices are this morning after reading this thread...

I have a terrible memory, but is this a new thing where gas prices rise as hurricanes bear down on the south? I mean, hurricanes have been hitting the southern US for decades, but I don't ever remember my dad bitching that gas prices were going up because of it, and he bitches about everything.

Usually only when they bear down on Houston, since that is where a large portion of the refineries are located.

I purchase around 200 gallons a month. The slight changes aren't that big of a deal but I'd probably think about quitting my drug route if it goes up a ton. Our surcharge is woefully inept. Its a really easy job so losing it would suck.

No, they get shut down, and thus stop production. It usually takes a couple of days to wind them down, then a few days to get them back up to full speed after the storm passes. But a direct hit by a hurricane on the refinery complex would do quite a bit of damage that would take longer to recover from.

Yeah, the first time I remember anything like this was after Katrina. Maybe it was one of those things where oil companies or the market realized "hey, we can get away with this if we hype things enough so let's do it" after 2005.

That's my impression, that this has become a scapegoat for some more price-gouging. But since I have a bad memory I thought I'd ask.

I think it takes 48 hours to perform a controlled shutdown. If they lose power during production, apparently product in process turns to sludge and is unusable.

Once the threat passes they start production back up. Not sure how long that takes.

Is anyone else experiencing gas shortages in your area?

Right now about 95% of gas stations in Augusta are completely out of gas. There are 10-15 car lines at the ones that do have some gas. As soon as a station gets a new shipment, word spreads and the whole city descends to hoard as much of it as they can.

Atlanta area is getting hit hard with gas shortages right now.

A few other cities around Atlanta are having problems as well.

Drove around Atlanta today while hitting up a couple of hikes, no exaggeration less than 1 in 10 gas stations has gas now. And those 1 in 10 have lines that are anywhere from 30-90 minutes long. I feel like I woke up in the 70s.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing over here in Stone Mountain. I went out yesterday amd decided to fill up. Went by 4 stations and the lines were crazy at all of them.

Luckily, I have half of a tank, so I passed, but this is crazy. I thought the supply was supposed to start picking up by now.

I was at a gas station late last night (out of gas, but I have a full tank. Was picking up snackies). The lady said that they had long lines all day till they were out, and they had to call the police out three times to break up fights. Ugly business.

Ok, why would the Atlanta metro suffer significant shortages when surrounding areas are not (I assume), not other parts of the region, let alone rest of the country? Do they have the only pipeline that goes directly from Galveston to Atlanta?
