GRRM's A Game of Thrones Game Announced

This is ripped fromShacknews for any who enjoyed the GRMs Fire and Ice Series of books there is a PC game (probably) being produced by Cynide of Blood Bowl fame.:

"Having revealed in May 2009 that it had picked up the interactive rights to George R. R. Martin's fantasy novel series 'A Song of Ice and Fire,' Blood Bowl developer Cyanide Studio today revealed the first fruits of that arrangement--the strategy title A Game of Thrones: Genesis.

Neither a release date nor platforms were given though a PC release seems inevitable at least, considering Cyanide's past titles.

How exactly will the award-winning series translate into a video game? According to Cyanide and publisher Focus Home Interactive, it'll go a little something like this:

'A Game of Thrones: Genesis' plunges you into the heart of the battles and intrigues between the Families that shaped the Kingdom of Westeros.

However, victory does not necessarily result from brute force. The innovative game mechanics provide players with numerous paths to success: will you opt for a military, economic or diplomatic approach? Trickery, treachery and deceit are widespread and you will constantly have to watch your back if you want to avoid a bitter defeat!

Peacefully or forcefully annex surrounding territories, besiege enemy castles, send spies to infiltrate behind enemy lines, assassinate trouble-making officers or capture them to ask for a ransom... When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground! "

Wasn't Blood Bowl an unmitigated disaster?

I think I might reread the books again and pretend I am playing a pc game in my mind and pass on this Cyanide game.....

It will probably be more fun

This is almost exactly what I said about 11 months ago:

The total war series, or even M&B, would be perfect for these. I've seen mods for them for both, but it just wasnt the same

I worked on the TW mod for a bit...then I was too inactive so they basically booted me.

Maybe I'm a sucker, but i've been waiting for news of this game.

blood bowl sucked, but cyanide's pro cycling manager game is good, so i'm not entirely down on the company.

Umm that is a completely different game I believe being created by Stardock Studio not Cyanide which is a complete different animal. It is coming out on August 24th and is almost a sure buy on release day for me.

Yeah, but my post in that thread was about Cyanide's "A Game Of Thrones" game, which was mentioned in the thread, not the Stardock Studio game.

Read the post linked. My comment to Daddy Torgo's post, re: Cyanide.

I pre-ordered it after listening to an interview with the developers on one of the podcasts that I listen to. I think DT also pre-ordered it after I talked to him about that so I really hope I didn't steer him wrong! One thing that they said was that they did spend a lot more time on the RPG...to the detriment of the RTS game that came out about 6 months ago. I just got an Amazon notice that my pre-order bonus, a GoT art book, shipped.

After the last steaming pile of turd they released with this license, which I literally played once, I'm gonna have to wait with this one.

Yeah - I preordered too and got the notice mine is expected tomorrow. My expectations have been dampened by what I've read, so maybe that's a good thing.

I'll post some initial impressions tomorrow night.

Home and installing.

Man if this thing sucks I can see HBO destroying Cyanide out of vengence.

Yeah this a WAS for me. As shitty as GRRM's writing is, the characters, setting, and plot are all intriguing enough to merit awesome TV show and computer game.

I think I played the CCG some years back too at GenCon and I remember it being pretty good.

Big Cyanide intro logo.

Big HBO intro logo right after. HBO should kill them if this blows.

HBO theme song on the start screen with a look out over the lands beyond the wall.

Looks like plans for DLC - quests and items at least in that menu (although blank now as you'd expect). As well as potentially different dogs for the warg-guy.

Pretty cool Varys-voiced intro to Westeros for new players with a background map showing Westeros.

Visuals actually look okay in this intro...Castle Black and the Old Bear.

Intro video: Mors' dog kills a deserter. Dog looked pretty craptastic.

Character selection:

Selecting abilities, Selecting traits (along a path), selecting points to put into weapon/armor skills. Game does a good job of telling you what affects what at least. Seems pretty standard I guess? I'm not a massive RPG-player myself so I have a limited frame of reference for it.

Cool strenths/weaknesses balancing mechanism.

Character creation done - now back to the game.

You're such a literary snob. It's not attractive.

Atmosphere is good.

Combat is...repetitive. Very much like "press X or press R1 and select one of your special-ability attacks."

Graphics are not Skyrim-quality or anything.

IGN savaged it

Game of Thrones Review - IGN

Now that I think about it, releasing it the same week as Diablo 3 may as well be screaming "Our game sucks. I hope no one notices."

'Cyanide' is turning out to be an appropriate name for that company with the way they are treating their AGoT licence.

Metacritic score is at 54. Looks like the second edition of the board game version is the one game to go with.

The CKII Game of Thrones mod is almost ready for it's first release apparently.
