Agree, Spain can't play that 4-6-0 anymore unless winning and wanting to lose time keeping the ball. Spanish players also played too slow for the 4-6-0 requirements, without enough mobility and quick passing that is the key of that non striker system. It was also clear that Xavi, Alonso, Busquets and Fabregas were too much central midfielders along with Silva and Iniesta that also move towards the middle most of the time. They all were taking each other space.

It was clear that Spain is very predictable offensively without a real striker (besides some magic played for the goal play, but that won't be always there), as for example you can't open and field and cross from the wings if there are only small midfielders around to go for the header. It was proven when Navas replaced Silva, he opened the game a lot and was dangerous at the right side, but there was nobody in the area to hit his crosses.

Torres had a few very good chances (that ruined as he is Torres), a fast striker can do wonders with the great Spanish passers around.

They were discussing why Rossi chose Italy.

Shay Given is having a howler; that first goal he should have stopped, and this one came of his head.

Wonder if they'll credit that as an OG to Given.

Aside from USA, I imagine this is the first time an MLS player has captained his team at a major international tournament (Robbie Keane, LA Galaxy).

I'm pretty sure a few have appeared before. The first wave of MLS had some fairly big-name players.

The best I can think of is Carlos Valderrama for Colombia in 1998.

Yeah i just thought of Valderrama. Did he captain Columbia while playing in MLS?

Either way, first MLS captain at the Euros for sure.

Lothar Matthäus in 2000 and Robert Donadoni in 1996? But I'm not sure, it could be both went to the MetroStars after the Euro's.

That seems likely, yes. David Beckham could have been the first in 2010, I suppose.

Yeah, those two and Miklos Molnar playing for the Kansas City Wizards and Denmark at Euro 2000.

Wikipedia says Valderrama captained Columbia at the 1998 WC. And he'd been in MLS since the start.. impressive.

Heh, I would have never guessed Miklas Molnar, Denmark 2000, playing for KC Wiz at the time. Looks like he's the 4th MLS player at the Euro's (other than Robbie Keane, Matthäus and Donadoni).

Beckham was injured in 2010, and England did not make Euro 2008.

Ireland are probably screwed. That was the most likely place for them to pick up 3 points. Hard to imagine them getting out of the group now. They'll need to do some incredible work in the last two games to advance.

DVR'd and just finished.

GG Italy.

I thought they looked more dangerous than Spain for the entirety of the game, and had a couple golden chances to score. Enough so that I'm mildly upset they didn't come out with 3pts.

Balotelli is a turd. As much as I don't like Rossi as an American, as a fan of Italy I wish he was out there.

In US news, Terrance Boyd has transferred to Rapid Vienna in Austria from Dortmund. Good for his to get a chance to compete for time at a team that is in the Europa League, but evidently Dortmund isn't as high on him as US fans are.

Two questions:

I was going to ask if England knows they're allowed to attack, but are England actually allowed to attack? Is it against the rules?

Has Ribery actually attempted a pass today? I'm pretty I saw him try to knock Nasri off the ball earlier.

All I can figure is that they came up with this plan solely to piss Wayne Rooney off so that he'd tear up teams the rest of the way.

I thought we played well - we had a plan and stuck to it, counter attacking and set-pieces.

Our midfield collapsed too far back towards the defense when they tired out towards the end of both halves, that made our possession infrequent as France pick up any balls cleared (simply put there wasn't anyone free to distribute the ball to) ... but I'm hoping we'll sort that out in the subsequent games.

We needed to be defensive, France have a good side - they're intelligent with good technique and movement, we had our chances and if Milner had had a bit more luck we'd have snuck it 2-1 ...

I think you mean "skill" and not "luck." Shit - he could have played it square across for the tap-in from whoever was coming down the far-side (I was at the gym and didn't have my glasses on so I couldn't tell who it was).

Defender would have intercepted it imho (although I haven't seen a replay but that was my gut instinct), he had to take it first time and shoot, if he'd controlled it or tried to knock it centrally I believe the defense would have handled it ...

Like I said - I was at the gym without glasses (and therefore effectively blind). It's quite possible I missed a defender in the middle that would have gotten in the way.

Regardless...a bad miss by him.
