The price of gas in Los Angeles is 3.01 a gallon for unleaded at my local gas station.

So does anyone think the oil era is winding down right now, and things are just going to get a hell of lot worse until the alternatives become feasible and widespread? Or is this just temporary?

Having the price be even $4.00 a gallon will not 'wind down' the oil era. It'll be a crunch for some people (ie, those owning SUVs especially), but people will deal, buy more hybrids or smaller Japanese cars.

I doubt the national average will get below $2.00 anytime soon.. unless someone invents an oil replicator

1.095 a liter = 4.14 a gallon in Saskatchewan, they're calling for 1.50 - 2.00 a liter by summers end. Lovely..

I filled up my 1993 Mazda (still 32 mpg!) next to a Hummer H2 filling up with premium the other day. He looked angry.

I don't have the foggiest. When my tank is empty, I go to a gas station and fill it up. the price per gallon is rather insignificant to me. it's not like I'm going to say "nope, too high this week. I'll pass".

I filled up for $2.95 a gallon a few days ago. Saw it was up to $3.09 at one of the more expensive stations in Old Town Alexandria this morning.

I wouldnt be suprised if we hit 4 dollars soon, at this rate. It would be nice if the price would settle down, however. I was paying around 2 bucks about 2 months ago, now it's 3. I hate that the price is starting to pinch my budget slightly in other areas. But it's also due to me not making as much money as most do, I'm sure. It starts to get shitty when you realize it now costs you maybe 4-5 bucks to drive to the store and back. I really need to trade into a smaller car, but it's not realistic at this point.

And this is another note, but I'm seeing that I've been getting even less mileage(2-4 less mpg) over the last several months than I'm used to getting. Probably could just be attributed to having an older car, although it sort of coincides with that massive price upswing around Katrina.

Make sure your tires are inflated at the right pressure. You'd be amazed at how much that can affect your mileage.

Yeah, I've checked stuff like that out, but it is a good tip. Got regularly changed oil. It's probably just coincidence.

Yeah but your pretty well used to getting screwed at the pumps, paying by the litre and all. It is a relatively new phenomenon for us here in the US.
