LAROCHE COMES UP BIG FOR NATS AS REDS BULLPEN CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE

Cincinnati, OH -- The Cincinnati Reds bullpen has struggled mightily in this first week of the season. That trend continued again on Saturday as Reds closer Aroldis Chapman blew a 1 run lead with 2 out in the 9th. After Reds Starter Mike Leake, who was pitching a gem, gave up a 2 out double to lead off the inning, Reds manager Dusty Baker called on Chapman to record the final out against fellow lefty Adam LaRoche. LaRoche wasted no time as he drove the first pitch slider over the fence to give the Nats the lead. The next batter, Danny Espinosa, homered as well off Reds reliever Jonathan Broxton. The blown save was Chapman's 3rd of the year in 3 save opportunities. Chapman has allowed 10 earned runs in 3 appearances this season.

Offensively, the Reds got their only run on a solo home run to center by Jay Bruce. The home run was Bruce's 2nd of the season as he joins teammates Shin-Soo Choo and Todd Frazier as Reds with multiple home runs this season.

Is he still going to be your first choice for save opportunities right now?

STRASBURG DOMINANT AS NATS CLOSE OUT REDS

Cincinnati, OH -- Stephen Strasburg showed why he is one of the most feared pitchers in the league on Sunday as he record a 5 hit shutout in his 2nd start of the season. Strasburg was deadly locating his pitches and did a really good job of mixing up his pitching, repeadtidly inducing flyouts and groundouts.

Strasburg's effort was backed by his 3rd baseman Ryan Zimmerman who recorded 3 hits on the day including and RBI double and an RBI triple. Adam LaRoche knocked in a run on a sac fly and Roger Bernadina got a RBI on a fielder's choice when Votto's throw to the plate was too high.

The Reds were quietly offensively as the really didn't sustain a rally all night. The one bright spot for the Reds offensively was backup outfielder Xavier Paul who collected 2 hits in his 3 at bats. Paul started for Ryan Ludwick who had the day off along with catcher Ryan Hanigan.

REDS BATS ICE COLD IN 3RD STRAIGHT LOSS

St. Louis, Mo -- The Cincinnati Reds got a good outing by starting pitcher Mat Latos but could not get any production offensively as they dropped their 3rd straight game in a 1-0 loss to the Cardinals. Latos pitched 6 innings giving up the single run on a throwing error by shortstop Zack Cozart. Cardinals starter Lance Lynn matched Latos pitch for pitch as he went 6.1 innings while no surrendering a run.

The Reds were able to string 7 hits together but were not able to sustain a rally as they have struggled recently with runners in scoring position. The Reds got a good offensive performance from Brandon Phillips who recorded 2 hits to break out of the mini slump he was in. Cincinnati also got doubles from Todd Frazier and Denis Phipps, who made his first at bat of the season in a pinch hit role.

ARROYO SHINES IN REDS 5-0 WIN

St. Louis, Mo -- The Cincinnati Reds responded to their 3 game losing streak in a big way on Tuesday as the shut out the home Cardinals 5-0 behind a great pitching performance by Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo pitched 8.1 very strong innings only allowing 2 hits. He gave up his first hit in the 5th inning on a single by Carlos Beltran. Arroyo was pulled in the 9th inning after Jon Jay hit a one out double. Arroyo was at about his limit in terms of pitches thrown.

The Reds offense came to life as well as they scored 5 runs on 13 hits. In the 5th inning, the Reds got a run on a single by Arroyo and another on a single by Brandon Phillips. In the 6th, they extended the lead to 3 courtesy of a Jay Bruce home run to deep center. Then in the 8th, the Reds tacked on 2 more after Todd Frazier and Zack Cozart doubled in the inning. Aroldis Chapman and J.J. Hoover came in to record the final two outs.
