Yankees Re-Acquire Andrew Miller
Attachment 133503
Exactly one year ago today, the New York Yankees dealt Andrew Miller to the Indians in exchange for OF Prospect Clint Frazier, LHP Prospect Justus Sheffield, and two right-handed relievers, who are also prospects.
Well, with the Yankees, somehow, having the best record in baseball, they wanted to make one final roster move to bolster that bullpen.
So, how do you really boost your bullpen while making the fan base even more excited than it currently is? Trade back for fan favorite, Andrew Miller.
The Yankees give up quite a bit in this trade. Here are the details of the trade:
Yankees Receive: RP Andrew Miller (92 Overall)
Indians Receive: RP Tyler Clippard (84 Overall), LF/RF Francisco Lopez (62 Overall, A Potential, Top 50 Prospect), and SP Ian Clarkin (64 Overall, B Potential)
The Yankees give up Tyler Clippard who is having an ok season. Clippard has 1-2 record with a 3.38 ERA in 21.1 IP. Clippard doesn't have half the innings pitched that Miller does because Dellin Betances, Carter, Capps, and Aroldis Chapman have all pitched better in later innings.
Francisco Lopez is one of the most promising outfielders in the Minor League Baseball. Lopez is currently one of the Top 50 prospects in the Minors thanks to his 92 Potential. Lopez was batting .272 with 4 HR's and 27 RBI's for the Yankees Double-A Affiliate, Trenton Thunder. The Yankees felt like they could move Lopez since they have Aaron Judge as their Right Fielder, whom they intend to sign to a long contract. They have Clint Frazier in Center Field. Frazier should be ready to start in Center next season as he's been progressing nicely this season and is putting up fantastic numbers. Then, the Yankees have OF prospect, Blake Rutherford, who they really like. The Yankees also have extremely speedy OF prospect Danny Hammonds who may be called up later this season. Those 4 players made the Yankees confident in including Lopez in the deal.
Finally, the Yankees gave up their former 2013 first round pick, SP prospect Ian Clarkin. Clarkin became buried on the Yankees' SP depth chart, which made him expendable. However, don't be surprised if Clarkin has a pretty solid career in the Majors.
And of course, the Yankees receive one of the most dominant relievers in baseball today, Andrew Miller. Miller is having a great season. He has a 1-3 record with a 2.09 ERA in 43 innings pitched. He also has 43 strikeouts.
The Yankees now have a ton of options in the bullpen. They could keep Betances in the setup role, and bring Miller in the game in the 7th inning. They could interchange Betances and Miller, keeping both guys fresh. They could put one as a Middle Reliever along with Adam Warren, Carter Capps, and flamethrowing rookie Chris Pena.
What once was an absolutely awful Yankee pitching staff, now looks like one of the best in the league thanks to moves made this season.

So Yankees trade Miller and Chapman and within a year get them both back. Not something you see everyday
