Game #36

ARIZONA 5, PITTSBURGH 4

David Peralta drilled an RBI double in the sixth inning.

5/11/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks jumped to a big lead on Thursday evening, then held on for a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Chase Field. Zach Greinke worked 7 1/3 innings, allowing just on earned run, to pick up his third win of 2017.

Zack Greinke flashed some leather, showing why he is a Gold Glover on the mound.
Arizona (19-7) would get on the board in the third inning as Chris Owings lead off with a double to right center, and Chris Herrmann chopped one through the infield to drive him home. They would add a run in the fourth on a Yasmany Tomas solo home run to left. It was Tomas' fourth on the year.

Drew Hutchinson came on in relief of starter Nick Kingham in the sixth and wasn't much relief. A.J. Pollock singled to left just past a diving Jung-ho Kang. David Peralta followed that with a double off the wall in right to score Pollock. That signaled the end for Kingham. Hutchinson came on and got Goldy to ground out, advancing Peralta to third. Jake Lamb singled home Peralta. One out later, Brandon Drury hit a ground-ruled double, and Chris Owings was intentionally walked. Hutchinson then walked Chris Herrmann on four pitches to force home Lamb to make it 5-0. Zach Greinke was allowed to bat and he flew out to right to end the threat.

The Pirates would finally get to Zack Greinke in the eighth as former DBack Phil Gosselin homered to left with one out in the inning. That spelled the end for Greinke, who went 7 1/3 innings, allowing just the one run on eight hits. He struck out five without issuing a walk. Archie Bradley came on and got them out of the eighth.

In the ninth, Bradley gave up a one-out solo home run to Jordy Mercer. It was just the first home run allowed by Bradley all season. Adam Frazier reached on an infield singled , and scored on an RBI double from David Freese to cut the lead to 5-3. Fernando Rodney was called in and he gave up an RBI single to Starlin Marte to cut the DBacks lead to just one run. But he would get Phil Gosselin to pop out and Alen Hanson to ground out to end the ball game. Rodney picked up his ninth save.

Phil Gosselin went 2 for 5 with a double and homer against his former club. Nick Kingham (0-4) took the loss, lasting just five innings and allowing four runs on five hits.

The series will resume on Friday night with Taijuan Walker (3-2, 3.52) going up aginst Gerrit Cole (2-4, 4.17).

Game #37

ARIZONA 12, PITTSBURGH 0

Taijuan Walker got some big time run support on Friday night.

5/12/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks offense is finally starting to heat up on this home stand. On Friday night, the DBacks crushed the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0 at Chase Field and they won for the fourth time in five outings.

Goldy keeps the hitting streak alive, going 2 for 4 with a double.
The Diamondbacks (20-17) would get an unearned run in the first inning off of Pirates ace Garritt Cole. Jeremy Hazelbaker singled and stole second with one out. Paul Goldschmidt walked. Brandon Drury ground one to third that looked like it may be an inning ending double play, but David Freese threw the ball into right field, allowing Hazelbaker to score.

The DBacks would score a second run in the fourth again thanks to the Pirates defense. Nick Ahmed singled to open the fourth. After Daniel Descalso flew out and Chris Herrmann struck out, Amhed reached second on a wild pitch. He would score after Taijuan Walker singled to right.

Arizona would blow it open in the fifth. Jeremy Hazelbaker led off the inning with a solo home run to left, his first on the season. Brandon Drury lined a one out double to left and reached third on a wild pitch. Yasmany Tomas walked to end Garritt Cole's night. Drew Hutchison came in and Nick Ahmed greeted him with an RBI double. Daniel Descalso then lined a two-run single to right to make it 6-0.

Juan Nicasio came in to pitch the sixth for the Bucs and wasn't much better. A.J. Pollock doubled to left to open the inning. He reached third on a wild pitch. Nicasio walked Hazelbaker on five pitches. Paul Goldschmidt then doubled to right center to score both runners and extend his hitting streak to 33 games. He would advance to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Brandon Drury single to make it 9-0.

Taijuan Walked walked to open the seventh. A.J. Pollock then hit a long two-run blast to left. It was Pollock's fifth home run on the season. Yasmany Tomas put a cap on this one with an RBI single back up the middle, to score Jeremy Hazelbaker as the DBacks extended their lead to 12-0.

Taijuan Walker (4-2) didn't need all of that run support though. He worked 7 1/3 shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out nine, while walking one. Andrew Chafin and J.J. Hoover finished off the game out of the bullpen.

Jeremy Hazelbaker got the start in right field and went 3 for 4 with a home run, and scored four runs. Arizona pounded out 17 hits in the victory.

The series will resume on Saturday evening with Patrick Corbin (0-1, 3.67) facing Ivan Nova (5-0, 1.68).

Notes: Jake Lamb injured his left hand in pregame warm ups and was held out of the lineup. Manager Torey Lovullo said that the injury is not serious, and Lamb will likely miss a few games, but a trip to the disabled list is not likely.

Game #38

ARIZONA 4, PITTSBURGH 1

Goldy's first inning single extended his club record hitting streak to 34 games.

5/13/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks won their third straight game on Saturday night, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 at Chase Field. Patrick Corbin picked up his first win on the year, working seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits.

Daniel Descalso's first inning three-run blast was all the offense that Patrick Corbin would need.
The Diamondbacks would get all the offense that they would need in the bottom of the first inning as Daniel Descalso hit a two-out, three-run home run to right off of Ivan Nova. David Peralta and Paul Goldschmidt had singled in front of him. Goldy's single extended his hitting streak to a club record 34 games.

The Pirates (15-22) would scratch across a run in the fifth. Jordy Mercer singled with one-out. Max Moroff doubled to right, advancing Mercer to third. It was Moroff's first career base hit. Ivan Nova would help his own cause as he grounded out to second, plating Mercer with the Pirates first run.

Patrick Corbin singled to open the bottom of the sixth, his second hit on the night. David Peralta singled to right and Paul Goldschmidt walked to load the bases. Brandon Drury singled to left to score Corbin. Drew Hutchison was brought in to relieve Nova and he worked out of the jam, getting Daniel Descalso to pop out and Nick Ahmed to ground out.

Pittsburgh would have a great chance to put a dent in that 4-1 lead in the eighth. Max Moroff singled to left to open the inning and chase starter Patrick Corbin. Randall Delgado came on in relief. Phil Gosselin singled to right. Delgado then struck out Adam Frazier and Alen Hanson. He then walked Andrew McCutcheon to load the bases. Manager Torey Lovullo brought on lefty Jorge De La Rosa to face lefty John Jaso and he got him to pop out to end the inning.

Fernando Rodney worked the ninth, allowing a two-out double to Jordy Mercer, but he did earn the save. It was his 10th on the season.

The win moved the DBacks (21-17) into a first place tie with the San Francisco Giants. The series will wrap on Sunday afternoon with Robbie Ray (1-2, 3.74) going up against Tyler Glasnow (0-4, 7.36).

Game #39

PITTSBURGH 3, ARIZONA 2

Chris Herrmann makes a mental mistake, allowing the Pirates to tie the game in the eighth.

5/14/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates took advantage of some shoddy Arizona Diamondbacks defense on Sunday afternoon as they escaped the desert with a 3-2 victory, to salvage the final game of their four game weekend series at Chase Field. The loss ended a modest three game winning streak for Arizona and left them a game behind the Giants in the National League West.

David Peralta doubled home A.J. Pollock in the sixth as the DBacks took the lead.
Arizona (21-18) would grab the lead in the second inning on a Brandon Drury solo home run to left. It came off of Tyler Glasnow and was his second on the season.

The Pirates would pick up an unearned run in the third thanks to a three base error on Yasmany Tomas in left as he misplayed a fly ball. Alen Hanson hit a ball high into the sky that Tomas lost in the sun. Hanson ended up on third and would score on a Starling Marte sacrifice fly to left.

A.J. Pollock singled to open the sixth for the DBacks and would score as David Peralta lined a double into the left-centerfield gap.

Robbie Ray went six innings for the DBacks, allowing the one earned run on five hits. He struck out five, while walking just one. Archie Bradley worked a scoreless seventh and Tom Wilhelmsen came on in the eighth. He struck out Sterling Marte, but Marte reached as the ball was in the dirt. He would steal second and reach third on an infield single from Andrew McCutheon. The Pirates then attempted a double steal and Chris Herrmann threw the ball to second to nab McCutcheon, while forgetting about Marte, who scored to tie the game at 2-2.

David Freese would walk and he was replaced by pinch runner Adam Frazier. Frazier stole second and would score on an RBI single from Francisco Cervelli. On the play, Yasmany Tomas misplayed the ball in left, allowing Frazier to score standing up to give the Bucs a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Paul Goldschmidt grounded out to third for the second out. That left him 0 for 4 with his 34 game hitting streak on the line.

Lefty Tony Watson came on in the ninth and gave up singles to Brandon Drury and Chris Iannetta. He then got pinch hitter Jake Lamb to line out to left to end the game to earn his 10th save, ending both the DBacks winning streak and Goldy's hitting streak.

Arizona will now host the Mets for a three game series to end the home stand.
