ROSTER MOVES

4/21/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks made a couple of roster moves before their game on Friday night with the Dodgers and a couple after the game.

Before the game, outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker was recalled from Triple-A Reno. Manager Tory Lovullo wanted another speedy option in the outfield, a dimension that current backup catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann did not bring. To make room for Hazelbaker, catcher Jeff Mathis was placed on optional assignment waivers. The 34-year-old was hitting .500 with the DBacks in a limited role through the first few weeks of the season.

After the game, pitcher Patrick Corbin was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a pulled leg muscle. Pitcher Braden Shipley was recalled from Triple-A Reno and will likely move into the long relief role of Zack Godley with Godley taking Corbin's spot in the rotation.

Also, offseason acquisition OF Gregor Blanco tore his ACL in Triple-A Reno yesterday and was placed on the 60-day disabled list. The tear is not a complete one and the team is hoping that he will only miss 8-12 weeks.

Game #19

LOS ANGELES 4, ARIZONA 1

Yasiel Puig strolls into third with a fifth inning stand up triple..

4/22/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Los Angeles Dodgers appear to have snapped out of their early season doldrums as they collected their fourth straight win on Saturday evening with a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Kenta Maeda tossed eight solid innings of three hit ball for the Dodgers to earn his first win of 2017.

game19b_17Kenta Maeda kept the DBacks at bay with eight solid innings on Saturday evening.
Pitcher Robbie Ray was forced to leave his start early for a second straight time. On Saturday evening he left with just one out in the second inning, complaining of neck pain. He was replaced by newly called up Braden Shipley, who did a wonderful job coming out of the bullpen.

The DBacks (12-7) would grab a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Jeremy Hazelbaker RBI single through the right side. It scored Chris Herrmann, who had doubled to center with one-out in the inning.

Los Angeles (7-11) would immediately get that run back as Justin Turner hit an opposite field bomb to right off of Shipley to open the fourth. The Dodgers would take the lead in the fifth on a Logan Forsythe RBI groundout. He plate Yasiel Puig, who had tripled to center just in front of him.

The Dodgers would get a couple of insurance runs in the seventh off of reliever Archie Bradley. Andre Either worked a ten pitch at bat and managed to open the inning with a double to center. Kenta Maeda bunted him over to third. Yasiel Puig grounded a ball back up the middle and into center to score Either. After a Logan Forsythe pop out, Corey Seager doubled off of the wall in center to score Puig all the way from first, to make it 4-1.

Kenley Jansen came on in the ninth and gave up a couple of base hits to make it interesting before locking down his second save. Kenta Maeda (1-1) picked up the win as he went eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He did not strike out a batter and issued one walk.

Paul Goldschmidt's ninth inning single extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Yasmany Tomas went 0 for 3 in the game to end his hitting streak at 13 games. Braden Shipley (0-1) took the loss despite a decent outing. He went 4 2/3 innings in relief of injured starter Robbie Ray. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking none.

The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon with Shelby Miller (1-1, 1.80) facing Hyun-JIn Ryu (0-1, 2.04).

Corey Seager likes his third inning home run off of Shelby Miller..

4/23/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Los Angeles Dodgers used a quick start to run their winning streak to five games as they completed a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 victory at Chase Field. Corey Seager provided the fireworks for the Dodgers, going 2 for 5 with a two-run home run and two runs scored in the victory.

game20b_17Jake Lamb hit his seventh home run on the season in the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough.
Los Angeles (8-11) jumped on a shaky Shelby Miller in the top of the first inning. Joc Pederson drew a one-out walk. Corey Seager singled to left and both runners would advance on a Miller wild pitch. Justin Turner would line a single back up the middle to score both runners to give Los Angeles a 2-0 lead.

Seager would add to that lead in the third as he hit a long home run into the seats in right. The two run shot gave the Dodgers a 4-0 lead.

The Dodgers would end up getting a big insurance run in the sixth off of Miller. Andre Ethier drew a one-out walk. He advanced to third on a Yasmani Grandal single. Logan Forsythe then hit one back at Miller that deflected off of him, allowing Ethier to score to make it 5-0.

Arizona (12-8) would finally get to Hyun-Jin Ryu in the bottom half of the sixth. A.J. Pollock singled to open the inning. After a Chris Owings flyout, Paul Goldschmidt singled to right to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Jake Lamb singled to right to load the bases with just one out. Yasmany Tomas broke through with a tw-run single back up the middle to cut the Dodger lead to just three. Brandon Drury then singled back up the middle to score Lamb to make it 5-3.

Pedro Baez was brought in from the bullpen and he struck out Nick Ahmed and got Chris Iannetta to bounce out to end the inning.

Jake Lamb would hit a solo home run with one out in the eighth off of Sergio Romo to pull Arizona back to within a run, but they could not find another and Kenley Jansen shut the door in the ninth to secure the Dodger sweep.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-1) picked up the victory, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked two. Shelby Miller (1-2) took the loss but wasn't horrible after a shaky start. He went seven innings, allowing the five runs on just six hits. He struck out three and walked four.

Arizona has seen their lead in the West shrink to just a half game over the Giants. They will now host San Diego for a four game series beginning Monday evening with Zack Greinke (1-2, 3.67) taking the ball and facing Trevor Cahill (0-1, 4.03).

Game #21

SAN DIEGO 14, ARIZONA 8

game21_17
Cory Spangenberg hits a go ahead three run blast in the seventh.

4/24/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The San Diego Padres used two big innings to stun the Arizona Diamondbacks 14-8 at Chase Field on Monday evening. Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, the Padres put up six in the seventh and eight runs in the eighth to pull out the victory to move back over .500.

game21b_17Ryan Schimpf hits an eighth inning grand slam.
Zach Greinke (2-2) and the DBacks were cruising in this one, leading 4-0 after six innings. The Dbacks scored four times in the third. Zach Greinke led off with a single and A.J. Pollock followed with a double to left center. David Peralta hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left off of Trevor Cahill to put the DBacks up 1-0. Goldy then singled to right to score Pollock and extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Jake Lamb doubled home Goldschmidt, and advanced to third on a Jeremy Hazelbaker groundout. He would score on a Cahill wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Greinke was cruising through six with a shutout working. He walked Ryan Schimpf to open the seventh and manager Tory Lovullo got the bullpen in action. He got Yangervix Solarte to ground out 1-3, with Schimpf advancing. Alex Dickerson blooped a single to right. Erick Aybar singled back up the middle to get the Padres on the board. Greinke then got Christian Bethancourt to bounce one back to him, but both runners advanced. Pinch hitter Manuel Margot was intentionally walked to load the bases. Travis Janikowski then lined a 1-2 slider into left to score both Dickerson and Aybar to cut the lead to 4-3.

Lovullo then went to J.J. Hoover to try and get the DBacks out of the inning. Cory Spangenberg took the first pitch and hammered it into the right field bleachers to put San Diego up 6-4.

The Padres would add eight in the eighth thanks to a two-run single from CHristian Bethancourt, a two-run double from Allen Cordoba and a grand slam from Ryan Schimpf.

Arizona pitchers threw 85 pitches in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing 14 earned runs on 10 hits. They issued three walks.

The DBacks tried for the unimaginable rally in the bottom of the ninth and had something cooking as they scored four times. Chris Herrmann hit a solo home run to open the inning. Goldy hit an RBI single and Jake Lamb hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 14-8, but that was all that they could muster.

Zach Greinke took the loss despite pitching six great innings. He allowed five runs on five hits. He struck out eight and walked three. Jake Lam's ninth inning home run was hit league leading eighth on the year.

The series resumes on Tuesday evening with Taijuan Walker (2-1, 4.88) taking the bump against Robbie Erlin (1-1, 3.38).

Yasmany Tomas hit a long home run in the ninth.

4/25/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks ended a season high four game losing streak on Tuesday evening with a 5-1 victory over the San Diego Padres at Chase Field. Taijuan Walker pitched a gem to help end the losing streak and help keep the DBacks within a game of the first place Giants in the National League West.

game22b_17Taijuan Walker gave Arizona just what they needed on the mound.
The Diamondbacks (13-9) would get on the board in the bottom of the first off of Robbie Erlin. Chris Owings drew a one-out walk. Paul Goldschmidt followed that with a single to right to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Danile Descalso was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Yasmany Tomas hit a sacrifice fly to right, but Paul Goldschmidt was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.

The Padres (11-11) would tie the game up in the sixth inning against Taijuan Walker. Travis Jankowski singled to left with one out. Cory Sangenberg then reached on an infield single on a line drive that deflected off the glove of Daniel Descalso at third. Wil Myers flew out to left, allowing Jankowski to advance to third. Yangervis Solarte then hit a bullet over the bag at first, and by a diving Paul Goldschmidt, for an RBI double to tie the ball game. Alex Dickerson was intentionally walked to load the bases before Walker got Erick Aybar to ground out to end the inning.

Taijuan Walker would get that run back in the bottom half though. He singled to open the inning. One out later, Chris Owings singled. After Goldy lined out to right, Daniel Descalso came through with a two-out RBI single to left to score Walker to put Arizona in front.

In the seventh, the Diamondbacks would score twice on Carter Capps wild pitches. First it was David Peralta scoring after he had doubled and advanced to third on a Brandon Drury single. Drury would come around after a Chris Iannetta single and A.J. Pollock fly out advanced him to third.

Yasmany Tomas would put a cap on the night with a long 450 foot home run in the ninth off of Kevin Quackenbush.

Taijuan Walker (3-1) worked seven innings, allowing the one run on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one. Archie Bradley picked up his second save pitching the final two innings.

The series continues on Wednesday evening with Zack Godley (1-0, 2.30) getting his first start on the season. He will face Colin Rea (2-2, 5.49).

Zack Godley picked up the win in his first start on the season.

4/26/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks got a great pitching performance from Zack Godley as they edged the San Diego Padres 1-0 at Chase Field on Wednesday evening. Godley worked seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits and striking out seven to pick up the win in his first start in 2017.

game23b_17David Peralta drove in the game's lone run in the third inning.
Arizona (14-9) would get all the offense that they would need in the bottom of the third. Chris Herrmann singled to open the inning off of Colin Rea. He would advance to second on a Zack Godley sacrifice bunt. After A.J. Pollock struck out, David Peralta lined a two-out double to score Herrmann and give the DBacks the lead.

That was all the support that Godley would need. He went seven innings, allowing just five hits, while striking out seven and walking none. He threw just 94 pitches. Jorge De La Rosa worked a perfect eighth, striking out two, and Fernando Rodney struck out two in the ninth to earn his fifth save.

Paul Goldschmidt was given the day off by manager Tory Lovullo so his hitting streak remains at 20 games. The DBacks managed just four hits in the game, all off of Colin Rae. He took the loss to drop his record to (2-3) despite working seven innings and allowing just one run. He struck out four and walked two.

The four game series concludes on Thursday evening with Robbie Ray (0-0, 2.63) facing Christian Friedrich (1-0, 2.82).
