Raymond Rose Coaching Legacy (CH2K8) cpu v. cpu

UC RIVERSIDE HIGHLANDERS, 2007-2008

UC Riverside will probably be high to start the season as the Highlanders have four tough road games. UC Riverside hired Raymond Rose to lead the Highlanders. Rose is the sixth head coach in school history and the fourth in the last four seasons. He has the unenviable task of improving UCR’s 7-24 record last year. Former head coach Jim Woolridge steps down as Rose's assistant while holding a new position as the school's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. Rose will have Marcus Vinson as the second assistant coach.

With Justin Bell and Henrik Thomsen gone, the Highlanders will be led by senior Larry Cunningham who scored 13.7 points per game a year ago. He will be needed early on as the Highlanders travel to Texas Tech and Gonzaga. UCR’s non-conference schedule also features games against Minnesota and USC. Cunningham enters this season ranked No. 12 on the UCR all-time scoring list with 1,012 points. He is remembered as an All-Big West Honorable Mention selection after ranking ninth in the league in scoring and fifth in free throw percentage (80%). Small forward redshirt Aaron Scott will be Cunnigham’s wingman.

Guards Chris Johnson and Charles Jim-George return this season. Johnson averaged 10 points per game and hit 41 three-pointers. Jim-George started 11 games and ranked third in the Big West in three-point field goal percentage (45%), making 30 of his 66 attempts.

The frontcourt will need some work. The Highlanders were last in the Big West in rebounding margin (-6.0) and blocked shots (1.5 bpg), opponents shot 53.7% on two-point attempts last year. The frontcourt will be a definite key this season for the Highlanders and how much production they get could decide how well they do this year. Expected to help B.J. Visman inside will be 6’7 redshirt junior Severin Gates and freshman forward 6’8 Josh Scott. Scott helped O’Dea HS (Seattle) to Washington state titles in 2005 and 2007. Junior Christian Soto is another returnee.

Riverside will try and be competitive in the Big West this season but may end up more than a middle of the road team at best.

TEXAS TECH WINS SEASON OPENER, ROUTS UC RIVERSIDE, 71-43

Nov.10, Lubbock TX - Texas Tech got what it wanted on the first day of their season, a jam-packed United Spirit Arena and an overwhelming victory. The Red Raiders manhandled the UC Riverside Highlanders, likewise their season opener, 71-43.

UC Riverside led early and held it until the 8th minute but then the Texas Tech unleashed a 18-5 run to run away for good. Mike Singletary was "Player of the Game" with 14 points. Rogorich Craig had 6 points and 11 rebounds in a game Red Raider star Martin Zeno barely made a sweat. Chris Johnson and redshirt sophomore Sean Cunningham led the Highlanders with 8 points each.

Re: Raymond Rose Legacy

UT-ARLINGTON CATCHES FIRE, HANDS UC RIVERSIDE THEIR SECOND LOSS, 66-52

Nov. 12, Arlington TX - UC Riverside coach Raymond Rose could just scratch his head. The Mavericks blew hot while his Highlanders completely froze as UT-Arlington won at home coming from behind UC Riverside to pull away, 66-52. UC Riverside was up 35-26 at halftime and was coasting along.

Rog'er Guignard hit 2 jumpers off the same left elbow, then a trey to pull the Mavericks within reach, four minutes gone in the second half as the Highlander guns went blank. Then Jermaine Griffin went to work, defensively and offensively. The Maverick center was virtually untouchable as UC Riverside could not guess what hit them, they never solved the puzzle.

Griffin hit a double-double, 20 points and 12 rebounds, and easily won "Player of the Game" honors. Guignard had 13 points. Chris Johnson led the Highlanders for the second consecutive game with 12 points.

UC RIVERSIDE WINS FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON, OUTLASTS EASTERN WASHINGTON, 70-58

Nov. 15, Cheney, WA - UC Riverside notched its first win with a convincing 70-58 victory thus spoiling Eastern Washington's first home game at the Reese Court. The Highlanders took the lead early, ended the half up by 9, and never looked back.

Aaron Scott and Severin Gates came back after a so-so last game to lead UC Riverside. Scott scored a game high 16 points while Gates, who went scoreless against UT-Arlington, had 11. But "Player of the Game" honors went to Chris Johnson with 13 points including 3 triples. B.J. Visman was nowhere in scoring but had 11 rebounds. Marcus Hinton and Brandon Moore led the Eagles with 12 and 10 points respectively for their third consecutive loss.

Re: Raymond Rose Legacy

GONZAGA TOO MUCH FOR UC RIVERSIDE, 71-47

Nov. 17, Spokane, WA - Before the season started, Raymond Rose knew he has to find recruits to fill the middle. The longing became very evident in UC Riverside's visit at the McCarthy Athletic Center losing to Gonzaga, 71-46.

The Bulldogs shot 40% from beyond the arc, 57% from the field including a whopping 42 points inside the paint. The Highlanders big men can only muster 9 points. Abdullahi Kuso scored 11 points in only 8 minutes of action while his 7'0 back-up Robert Sacre made a game high 15 points. Freshman Austin Daye had 14 and was the "Player of the Game". Chris Johnson led the Highlanders with 12 points.

Re: Raymond Rose Legacy

Four games through the season, Chris Johnson leads UC Riverside in points scored. Larry Cunningham has yet to emerge in his starring role as the main man. Aaron Scott is blossoming to be a future Highlander star while Severin Gates has to be more consistent otherwise the hard-working Benoit Bekono may just stepped in his starting spot. Charles Jim-George has yet to find his range and freshman Josh Scott has shown great potential.

The UC Riverside Highlanders goes home and will have their season's first home game at the Student Recreational Center on November 24 against the Idaho Vandals (0-2) before flying again after Thanksgiving to meet the Minnesota Golden Gophers on November 24. Tough schedule for UC Riverside but Raymond Rose remains confident the Highlanders will go beyond expectations.

Player of the Week, Nov 12-18:
Kevin Love, UCLA

Games of the Week, Nov 12-18:
Connecticut (4-0) d. Oklahoma (4-1), 51-42

Re: Raymond Rose Legacy

...will have to put my Legacy on hold, the disc developed a small crack in the middle rendering it unreadable. Immediately got one from Amazon for $14.99 and hopefully will be here soon. That's how I love this game.

UC RIVERSIDE WINS HOME OPENER, ROUTS IDAHO, 60-40

Nov. 24, Riverside, CA - UC Riverside celebrated their return home with a convincing 60-40 rout over a hapless Idaho squad. It was their first game at the Student Recreation Center. The Highlanders led early as they held the Vandals scoreless until the 7th minute then took the half, 32-24. The second half started almost the same as Idaho could only score 5 in the first 12 minutes.

UC Riverside outrebounded Idaho, 45-26, and was led by B.J. Visman with 12 boards. Visman, who scored 8 points, took the "Player of the Game " honors. Aaron Scott led the Highlanders with 13 points. Chris Johnson had 7 but was disappointingly 1 of 7 from the field. Larry Cunningham had an unforgettable night with only 2 points and worse 0 of 12. Mike Hall shot a game-high 15 for the Vandals, which went down 0-3 for the season.

The Highlanders once again go back on the road and travel to Minnesota to play the Golden Gophers on December 1, then return to California in San Diego for a meeting with the Aztecs December 4.
