Montreal Mounties - An expansion dynasty (NBA 2k19)

February 7, 2019

Montreal and Seattle awarded NBA expansion teams

As one of the NBA's busiest trade deadlines in recent memory came and went, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced today that league execs had voted unanimously to award expansion franchises to Montreal and Seattle, with both teams commencing play at the beginning of the 2019-2020 season.

New expansion rules will be applied to attempt to make the teams more competitive than previous expansion teams. Teams will be given 7 protection slots that can be used on whichever team member they choose, regardless of contract status.

Montreal and Seattle will also be given an opportunity to draft well. The teams will draft back to back in the 4th and 5th slots of the entry.

Seattle, which will once again be known as the "SuperSonics", is expected to name Tom Thibodeau as their head coach and general manager. Thibodeau most recently coached the Minnesota Timberwolves, but was dismissed earlier in the season.

The Mounties have yet to name a GM, but the expectation is that ownership intends to do so in the very near future.

Mounties name GM

Canadian basketball icon and NBA Hall of Fame member Steve Nash will lead the Mounties.

Nash, a two time NBA MVP was announced as the teams first ever GM in a press conference this morning.

"We're excited to get this thing going!", Nash said. "We expect to build a tremendous leadership group here, and to build a team that Montreal, and Canada as a whole, can be proud of."

When asked about what style of roster he intends to draft, Nash was non-committal. "In our opinion, there will be plenty of opportunities over the next few months to build something special. Many teams around the league are up against it when it comes to the cap, and we're essentially starting with zero dollars on the books. Definitely a chance to grab some decent assets, while also picking up some veteran players."

Currently without a coach, Nash made it clear that the team wouldn't be rushing out to hire someone right away. "Clearly we want to have someone in that position sooner rather than later, but we're doubtful that the team will hire someone before the end of the playoffs. We have a few targets, and intend to have someone in place by the draft, but again, we have no intention of rushing this process."

While expansion lists won't be made public until the night before the draft, early predictions include plenty of Canadian content that Nash may be able to pick up, with Kelly Olynyk, Dwight Powell, and Tristan Thompson all listed as bubble players that may not be protected by their teams.

Thunder sweep 76ers, win 1st championship

After leading a sweep of the defending champion Warriors, playoff MVP Russell Westbrook continued to dominate, averaging 26.6/7.4/10.2, and leading the Thunder to a dominant sweep of the 76ers.

The 76ers were never really in this one, as they lost every game by at least 15 points.

Jerry Stackhouse will join Steve Nash in Montreal.

The 44 year old is an 18 year NBA veteran, who will bring a ton of on court experience to the team.

Stackhouse's coaching resume includes time as head coach of the Raptors G league affiliate, Toronto 905, and was most recently the assistant coach in Memphis.

Mounties acquire Hayward, 13th overall pick

Montreal GM Steve Nash said that he'd be aggressive when it came to acquiring players, and he followed through this morning by acquiring Gordon Hayward and a first round pick from the Celtics in exchange for a protected 2nd round pick and a ton of cap space.

The Celtics are expected to be on the hunt for Anthony Davis, and this cap space may open up room to chase another star free agent.

Hayward struggled in his return from a torn ACL last season, averaging 12.2 points per game.
