Miami Dolphins

No one expected the 11-5 season a year ago but they did just that much to their success in implementing the Wildcat. The problem for Sparano will be keeping things original. If the Wildcat is a gimmick, which many think it is, then defenses will adjust accordingly.

Without the luster of the Wildcat, there is not too much to look at. Chad Pennington will be under center again and hopefully can stay healthy. There is not much to get excited over with their receivers. WR's Ginn, Camarillo, and Bess, are all serviceable but none are game changers at the position.

The strength of the offense is the offensive line and their running game. OT Jake Long is the big name that anchors the line but it is a line with lots of upside. Behind them are RB's Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams who should remain viable options for the ground game.

The defense has been a group of low key names with the exception of OLB Joey Porter. He had 17.5 sacks last season but he is getting on in years and it is not clear who may replace him.

The interesting thing that Miami has done to bolster its defensive side is in drafting a CB in each of the first two rounds of the draft. CB Vontae Davis (brother of 49ers TE Vernon Davis) was the 1st round pick and figures to start opposite of Will Allen. However, the 2nd round CB pick, Sean Smith is an oddity at the position at 6'3" and 215 lbs. Don't be surprised if he becomes a starter along with Davis. It is obvious that the Dolphins want to build the secondary with FA pickup safety Gibril Wilson (expected to start on day one). Keep in mind that they lost CB Andre Goodman to Denver. He was their leader in interceptions but this team may be a better unit despite that loss.

Key Acquisitions

C - Jake Grove (Oak)
OLB - Cameron Wake (CFL)
S - Gibril Wilson (Oak)

Key Losses

CB - Andre Goodman (Den)
S - Renaldo Hill (Den)
DE - Vonnie Holliday (FA)

QB - Pat White - 2nd round
CB - Sean Smith - 2nd round
WR - Patrick Turner - 3rd round

New England Patriots

The return of Tom Brady brings with it a hype and hope that there is a chance of a repeat of 2007. Randy Moss, Wes Welker and the additions of some other veterans in Fred Taylor and Joey Galloway bring an optimism to this organization. 50 TD passes and a 16-0 regular season may be a bridge too far but the talent is there to dominate throughout the year and push towards a 4th Super Bowl victory for Brady and Belichick. After last years 11-5 finish with Matt Cassel under center, the optimism is warranted.

Defensively, the team has already taken a couple of hits. Safety Rodney Harrison is gone. As is DE Richard Seymour. Seymour has been considered one of the more complete down linemen in all of football and was a valuable end in the 3-4 scheme. Wilfork and Ty Warren remain and should still help bolster one of the best three man fronts in the league. Jerod Mayo and Adalius Thomas should bring some speed off the line. FS Brandon Meriweather is probably the most talented of the defensive backs and can roam with speed.

Ultimately though, expect the Patriots to remain competitive as long as Belichick is at the helm. They are the Super Bowl favorites this year.

Key Acquisitions

CB - Leigh Bodden (Det)
CB - Shawn Springs (Sea)
WR - Joey Galloway (TB)
RB - Fred Taylor (Jax)

Key Losses

FB - Heath Evans (NO)

DT - Ron Brace - 2nd round
CB - Darius Butler - 2nd round
OT - Sebastian Vollmer - 2nd round
OL - Rich Ornberger - 4th round

New York Jets

Rex Ryan is the new head coach bringing with him what New York fans hope is a piece of the Baltimore Ravens defensive toughness. He inherits an average defense to work with that includes some talent. He brings with him DE Marques Douglas, LB Bart Scott, and S Jim Leonard. CB Darrelle Revis is a pro bowler and appears to be a solid cover corner who can take away big threats (eg. Randy Moss).

With being the head coach, Ryan also has to deal with a rookie QB in Mark Sanchez who was the 5th overall pick. Expect a conservative offense so as not to push Sanchez into oblivion. RB Thomas Jones is the returning AFC rushing champion and should help keep the team in games as long as the defense becomes what Ryan expects them to be.

This won't be the same team as last year and should avoid the unnecessary spotlight of the New York media. No Favre, a rookie QB, and hopefully a more beefed up defense should bring this team back to its blue collar roots.

Key Acquisitions

DE Marques Douglas (Balt)
S Jim Leonard (Balt)
LB Bart Scott (Balt)
CB Lito Sheppard (Phi)

Key Losses

LB Eric Barton (Cle)
LB David Bowens (Cle)
DE Kenyon Coleman (Cle)
S Abram Elam (Cle)
WR Laveranues Coles (Cin)
CB Ty Law (FA)
QB Brett Favre (Min)

Key Draft Picks

QB - Mark Sanchez - 1st round
RB - Shonn Greene - 3rd round
OG - Matt Slauson - 6th round
