How do I capture video on my computer?

I want to make some videos of my APF 2K8 and NBA 2K9 highlights. What do I need to capture video from the tv and save it to my laptop?

Not really expensive, you do get what you pay for though.

        What is your budget

I'd love to keep it under $100 but definitely no more than $200.

I just got something although the quality sucked, it was fun fooling around with it.

Im sure there is a way to record in seim HD but you'd have to buy extra plugs

I've got an HDTV, but I just want decent quality for my videos to put them up on Youtube.

Re: How do I capture video on my computer?

Just so you know, you won't be able to capture HD for under $100 (if that matters at all).

                under or around $200

                Dazzle ($40-$80)

                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815144028

                Diamond($40)

                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815306013

                Pyrolink($150)
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815255019

                Canopus($240)
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814144214

If you want to get into HD capture then you can start looking into BlackMagic & Hauppauge

                Intensity(Pro)(http://blackmagic-design.com/products/)
                HD-PVR (http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html)

There are other devices out there capable of capturing HD but I only have experience with BM.

Keep in mind when you start getting into HD territory your budget tends to go up since you have to start thinking about drive speed and cpu speed. Just make sure you have an adequate rig to get the job done.

As far as editing you can use a program as simple as windows movie maker(for standard-def). Regarding capturing, you may also want to look @:

                WinDV
                Virtualdubmod(vdm)
Most NLE's (Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Ulead(can range in the $300-400 range))

I'll post more suggestions when I get home.

edit: I know people use DVD recorders but I have no exp with that, i'm pretty sure there are guys on this forum who use them, maybe they will chime in.

I would just advise against Pinnacle - the card isn't that great, and the Studio software isn't all that great; and it's pretty unstable.

For actually capturing - once you get a card, I highly suggest PowerDirector 7.0. Great piece of software for $60.

I got the diamond device man, and it wasnt a great experience, and I also got the pinnacle video transfer. It was about $100

There is a guy on youtube that will show you how to capture in better than SD quality semi HD

I bought a Dazzle Platinum from Woot.com for $29 a few days ago... hasn't gotten here yet, but I'll certainly be posting some videos I capture with it and I'll try to remember to bump or add them to this thread so everyone can see it. YouTube has a lot of video examples of how the Dazzles work also -- I got one because the quality seemed solid and it will be easy to play and capture at the same time with my rig.

lol, yeah initially it reminded me of a psp when I saw it, but its pretty easy to use once you DL the firmware. You dont need a pc to use it which is great, and while I got some crappy SD footage I used there are 3 settings Good Better and Best. I used composite cables though so it was bound to have limitations but it compresses video very well for you.

While searching youtube, i saw a bunch of video's on the dazzle devices. There are ways to record HD but as I said youre going to have to go through extra steps when you finally figure out how to use it normally.

Buddy, here's what my buddy Wepeeler uses to record his Fifa matches for his vids: http://myhava.com/product_hava_wireless_hd.html

It's a bit pricy but it is really functional and records in HD. But it is within your $200 cap.

A great product sells itself, no "back of the box" features required! (See Fifa...)
