Slide Tackling Question

So I'm a complete soccer NOOB but I love sports games and I decided to pick up an older version of FIFA (12) and give it a shot. Even though I'm terrible at it the game is a lot of fun. My question is, in the tutorial they teach you how to slide tacke (X button on 360). But every time I do it in a game I get penalized. Am I doing it wrong? When is it appropriate to slide tackle? Are you penalized every time?? This is probably a stupid question to you soccer veterans but I'm clueless.

you have to be nearly caught up to the player, not too far behind. You have to aim so you make contact with the ball first, not the player. Try to use it sparingly. For the most part try to use B instead of X, or intercept the ball
