I was so mad at all the stuff stripped out of NHL 15 that I didn't bother with that game, nor the next two.

But expansion is looking really intriguing to me. I love it in NBA 2K, as it lets you build YOUR team from the ground up. A shame that game had so many flaws on the court, which hopefully will be fixed this year.

However, most of what I'm reading here says the game "hasn't changed much from 17." And while that's a very good point (and one of the reasons I've stayed away for a while), that doesn't help much to someone who's been out of hockey gaming this long.

So, does this look like a game to buy to someone who hasn't played EA NHL in four years?

Eh, depends on what you do, if you play online then yeah it's a good idea to pick it up. If you play GM mode, then nope, AI, skating, goalies and a few other things has gotten worse on next gen NHL compared to previous gen, I wish I still had NHL 10 for my 360 as I'd still be playing that although NHL Legacy is apparently still relevant these days for that.

I would say wait for a sale or get NHL 17 very cheap on ebay.

NHL 18 does not worth full $60 price simply for the lack of evolution from one version to another. Wait until it's at least half of that for buy, you can probably get a NHL 17 used copy for less than $10 and the experience will be basically the same for you.

All the new dekes look really cheesy. Im probably gonna buy it but I wouldnt be surprised if I go back to playing 17 and not liking 18

I'm personally still on NHL Legacy PS3.
I tried 15 & 16 on PS4 and ended up selling them.

I just really prefer the previous gen feel of the gameplay and all the fleshed out features, etc.

I might try 18 to see how far it's come, but I was just underwhelmed by the early efforts on current gen (ps4/xb1).

Wait what got stripped away from 14 on NHL 15 and Legacy? I thought things were only added (albeit very few but still) and they fixed the bouncy puck physics plus better goalies.

NHL 15 for next gen was missing EASHL, OTP, entry draft (it was automated), preseason, all-star game, simming through BAP, setting team stratgies (only could change it during a match), practice mode, etc. and no goalies are actually worse and the puck behaved really weird at times. But one good thing is that the AI in 15 was better than that in 16 and 17 and apparently 18.

OTP and entry draft was eventually added later.

Bumping because I'm a franchise gamer, and with the new GM mode details, does this still look like a purchase for someone who's been out for four years?
