Game Notes
IU has struggled against MSU in the past, but last year's game may have been a turning point. The Spartans are off to a slow start, while Indiana is having their best season in years, despite last week's loss.
Prediction: IU 24-20.

Re: Never Daunted: An Indiana Hoosiers Dynasty (NCAA 14)
Hoosiers bounce back with OT win
Bloomington- IU had little time to feel bad about their loss to Purdue, as Michigan State came to town with the Old brass Spittoon on the line. MSU entered the game 3-3, not good by Spartan standards, and were coming off a loss to Nebraska.
MSU took the opening drive deep into Hoosier territory, but Indiana’s defense would force the Spartans to settle for a field goal. Indiana would respond with a drive resulting in a Daryl Chestnut touchdown, putting IU up 7-3. MSU would fumble the ball away on their next possession, giving the Hoosiers the ball with a short field, which would turn into another touchdown for Chestnut.
After taking a 14-10 lead into the break, IU would come up just short on third down, resulting in a Hoosier field goal to push the lead to 7. Afterward, the teams would trade touchdowns, making it a 24-17 ball game. Michigan State would tie the game at 24 with 55 seconds remaining on a 9 yard touchdown pass from Spartan QB Damion Terry. Indiana would get the ball into field goal position, but Richardson’s 48-yard try would miss to the left, sending the game to overtime.
Michigan State received the ball to start overtime, and following a second down sack, Terry would end the Spartan possession with a pass into coverage that would be intercepted. Richardson would redeem his earlier miss, booting in a 23-yarder to win the game. Final score, Indiana 27, Michigan State 24.
After losing the Old Oaken Bucket to Purdue last week, the Hoosier trophy case won’t go empty this year, as the Hoosiers retain the Old Brass Spittoon, winning back-to-back games over the Spartans for the first time since 1967-69.
After the game, coach Pate said of his team’s performance, “This was an all-around good game for us. It was good to just get back out there. We needed this, a good win over a good team. I’m proud of our guys.
“They (Michigan State) are a very good team. They may be .500 on paper, but that’s not a .500 team. That’s a very tough team.”
Notable performances from the game include Heisman candidate Daryl Chestnut rushing for 214 yards on 32 carries, adding 3 touchdowns for the Hoosiers.
After last week’s total failure in the passing game, with only 5 total passing yards, IU’s Jon Manning fared much better against the Spartans, completing 13 of 15 passing for 110 yards with 0 touchdowns. He had no interceptions, but did fumble on his lone scramble attempt. His MSU counterpart, Damion Terry, had an impressive showing as well, going 22 for 27, 222 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.
Indiana will close out their three-game home stand next week against Rutgers, who beat the Hoosiers last season in a game that would ultimately cost the Hoosiers a shot at the Big Ten title. Kickoff is set for 8 PM.

Game Notes
Indiana may be looking for a little revenge from last year's game in New Jersey. It's hard to tell just how good this Rutgers team is, having wins against Florida and Penn State, but losses against Illinois and UCLA, along with last week's loss to Ohio State, which knocked the Scarlet Knights out of the top 25. Should be interesting under the lights.
Prediction: Indiana 34, Rutgers 21.

Re: Never Daunted: An Indiana Hoosiers Dynasty (NCAA 14)
Scarlet Scare
Talk about deja vu. IU with the ball, tie game, late fourth quarter, and a chance for Lewis Richardson to win it on a field goal.
A week after finding themselves in the same position against Michigan State, Indiana found itself looking to hold off Rutgers in a Big Ten matchup at Memorial Stadium. And just like last week, Richardson’s kick that would have won the game for IU just missed. This time, the kick had the accuracy, but the 44-yard try into the wind fell just short, bouncing off the crossbar.
But let’s back up. IU was looking to continue their winning ways after an overtime nail-biter against MSU. Rutgers was trying to get back above .500 after falling out of the top 25, and was looking for their first road win on the year.
Defense was the name of the game for most of the first half, and it took until the 1:47 mark of the second quarter for either team to find the scoreboard, as Rutgers receiver Lance Bell hauled in a pass over the middle and took it the distance, outrunning a pair of IU defenders for the 72-yard TD. IU would knock in a field goal to end the half, and the teams went into the locker room with Rutgers up 7-3.
Indiana would take the opening possession of the third quarter deep into Scarlet Knight territory, and Daryl Chestnut finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown, giving the Hoosiers their first lead of the game. A Rutgers field goal late in the third quarter would tie the game at 10, setting up a dramatic fourth quarter.
With around two minutes to go in the fourth, it looked like Rutgers would take the lead on what appeared to be a touchdown run, but the points were taken off the board as the result of a clipping penalty. Rutgers would later try to go for it on fourth down, a questionable call with the Knights in field goal range, but would be stopped well short when Rutgers QB Eric Rodriguez would be sacked. The two teams would trade possessions from that point, and Indiana found themselves with the ball and a chance to seal the game in regulation.
In ideal conditions, 44 yards is within Richardson’s range. However, he found himself kicking into a five-mile an hour wind, which would be just enough to cause the potential game-winner to fall short.
In overtime, Rutgers looked to be on their way to a touchdown, but the Indiana defense would again step up, stopping the drive at the 2. Rutgers would take the easy field goal, retaking the lead. It appeared as though the Hoosiers would have to settle for a second overtime, as a pair of Chestnut rushes would go nowhere, setting up a third and long. IU quarterback Jon Manning would find receiver Sam Pitts on a short slant route, and Pitts would just inch his way into the endzone for the touchdown. Indiana wins, 16-13.
“We didn’t take advantage of some good opportunities,” said IU’s coach Pate.
“We left a lot of points on the field today. I’m happy we won, and that our guys fought all the way. I thought our defense really shined tonight. But as a unit, we have to do better.”
Chestnut picked up 132 yards on 31 rushes and scored a touchdown. IU’s Jon Manning threw for 147 yards, completing 12 of 17 passes, and had a touchdown and no interceptions. Rutgers QB Eric Rodriguez went 13 of 20 for 180 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions.
The Hoosiers suffered a notable injury in the game, as senior wide receiver Sean Alexander will be out 4 weeks with hip bursitis.
Indiana will now hit the road for a three game roadtrip, with their first game coming next week against a struggling Maryland. The Terps are 1-7 on the year, with their lone win coming against West Virginia by a single point.
“We can’t take anything for granted,” said Pate. “We have to come to play. Just because they don’t have a great record doesn’t mean anything. We still have to go out there and battle.”
Kickoff is set for 3:30 in College Park.
