Year 1 (2011), Game 1, Wyoming at Eastern Michigan
EMU senior HB Corey Welch scores one of his three second half touchdowns / CB Marcel Rose picks off a first quarter pass
On the Right Foot: Eagles Top Cowboys 38-20 on Rainy Opening Weekend
HB Welch puts game away for EMU with three second half TDs | Wyoming unable to get ground game going, held to 45 yards | EMU WR Thomas leaves game with strained back
AP Ypsilanti – The Eastern Michigan Eagles got an opening day victory as they topped the Wyoming Cowboys 38-20. The matchup marked the first time the two schools had ever met on the football field. Senior HB Corey Welch took home player of the game honors as he compiled 122 yards and three scores. Welch didn't get the majority of his work in until the second half when HB Dominique Sherrer left with an ankle injury. The two senior tailbacks are expected to split carries moving forward.
Senior WR Travis Hunter will be called upon to step up with the injury to Kinsman Thomas.
Wyoming relied heavily on the arm of freshman QB Adam Pittser, who lead the no-huddle spread offense. Pitsser had a solid showing throwing for 268 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys took a 20-17 lead into halftime. However, the second half would be all Eastern Michigan, as the Eagles scored 21 unanswered points to take home the 38-20 win.
Welch ran wild in the second half, scoring three times on runs of 1, 2 and 30 yards. The 30 yard touchdown run was one for the highlight reels as, the senior spun away from two would be tacklers before outrunning the defense down the sideline.
"We are really lucky in that we have two tremendous seniors at the halfback position in Corey (Welch) and Dominique (Sherrer). They are both going to get a lot of touches moving forward." -- Eagles Head Coach Dan Clayton
Eastern Michigan (1-0) will be at home again next week as they take on the Navy Midshipmen (1-0). Navy won their season opener against Delaware 24-14. The game will be broadcast regionally and is scheduled to kick off at 12 pm EST.
Injury Note: Eagles star junior WR Kinsman Thomas suffered a strained back in the win and is expected to miss the next two games with the injury. Before being hurt, Thomas had five catches for 78 yards and a score.

Nice opening win for the dynasty bro, also Wyoming's mascot is the Cowboys
Haha that's what I get for doing a write up while exhausted. Thanks for catching that my friend and I think I corrected them all. Definitely a big win for us to start off the season. I have a feeling wins are going to be a rare thing for a while with this team. Thanks for checking in and following along!
Re: A Rising Storm in the North | Cheese's Eastern Michigan Dynasty
Sorry I was absent for a few days. I had to attend my cousin's wedding and was traveling for most of the weekend. I am hoping to have another update on this later in the evening and then hopefully firing up the Navy game tonight or tomorrow. Thank you for following!
Injury -- It has been confirmed that Eagles starting WR Kinsman Thomas (70 ovrl) suffered a strained back in the team's week one victory over Wyoming. The injury is expected to keep the star wide receiver sidelined for at least the next two weeks. Thomas had five catches for 78 yards and a score before going down with the injury.
Analysis -- A devastating blow to an Eagles offense that lacks playmakers. Redshirt sophomore WR Nick Olds (63 ovrl) will be thrust into a starting role during Thomas's absence. None of the other wide receivers have the speed and hands to stretch the field like Thomas so expect a major drop off in the passing game. The only upside to this injury is that Thomas should be back before the team starts conference play.
Eagles Land First Recruit of the Season -- Two star wide receiver Tom Peterson (6-1, 186 lbs) became the first recruit of the Eagles 2012 class. The Manistee, Michigan native immediately accepted a scholarship offer from the Eagles without taking a official visit. Peterson was also considering in state schools; Western Michigan and Central Michigan.
Analysis -- With only a single wide receiver graduating this year, Eastern Michigan is pretty deep at receiver so expect Peterson to redshirt his first year on campus. Peterson has shown a lot of raw talent as a four year starter for the Manistee Chippewas but lacks polish and mechanics. If he can develop his route running and catching he could easily be a solid second wide receiver in his sophomore season. Peterson was ranked by rivals.com as the 205th best wide receiver and 1632nd prospect overall.
EMU senior HB Corey Welch powers his way into the endzone / Welch breaks free to start the second half with a kick return for a score
Sunk: Eastern Michigan Handles the Navy Triple Option in 42-20 Win
EMU QB Gillett lost for season with collarbone injury | Senior FB Teich leads Navy ground game, 90 yds 2 TDs | EMU HB Welch impresses again; 2 rushing TDs, 1 special teams TD
AP Ypsilanti – The Eastern Michigan Eagles moved to 2-0 on the season as they downed the Navy Mid-Shipmen 42-20 in the second week of the season. Senior HB Corey Welch took home player of the game honors for the second week in a row as he scored twice on the ground and added a kick return touchdown in the second half. Despite sharing time with fellow senior HB Dominique Sherrer, Welch continues to have a fantastic season with five rushing touchdowns already. For Navy, their triple option attack was led by senior FB Alexander Teich. Teich had 90 yards on the ground and scored twice.
Redshirt junior safety Alex Bellfy continues to lead the defense, collecting six tackles and an interception in the win.
Disaster would strike for the Eagles midway through the second quarter when QB Alex Gillett took a hard hit and lay motionless on the ground. He had to carried off the field by trainers. Imaging later confirmed that the junior signal caller had suffered a broken collarbone which will end his season. Rather than burn the redshirt on true freshman QB Mark Iannotti, head coach Dan Clayton said the team would go with redshirt freshman QB Tyler Benz. Benz played decently in one half of playing throwing for over 150 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Benz will be thrown into the fire immediately as his first collegiate start will come on the road at the 'Big House' against the 24th ranked Wolverines.
"It is a really devastating blow to our offense to lose Alex (Gillett). He is a tremendous competitor and a leader. No one is taking this injury harder than he is but I know he will continue to be a big part of this team from the sidelines. " -- Eagles Head Coach Dan Clayton
Eastern Michigan (2-0) will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan and the 'Big House' to take on the 24th ranked Michigan Wolverines. The Wolverines are coming off a thrilling night time victory last week in primtime against then 21st ranked Notre Dame. Michigan won a 51-44 shootout led by quarterback Denard Robinson. Michigan won the last meeting with Eastern Michigan in 2009 and holds a dominant 9-0 all time series lead over the Eagles. The game is scheduled to kick off at 12pm on Saturday and will be regionally broadcast.
