Re: California Dreamin'

Finally got through the grind of getting to Week 1 and played my Game of the Week 1. I'm heading out soon for a closing shift so the results won't be up until late tonight or tomorrow. How soon I get to the Rams-Niners game depends on how long it takes to do practice squads and depth chart double-checking but it will definitely be played tomorrow.

I had about a half-dozen unintended cuts/practice squad assignments that I had to fix and it looks like between Week 4 of ps and Week 1 all the CPU did was auto-fill the practice squads, which I wish it hadn't done. I may have had less trouble by doing the adjustments in the roster menu and ignoring the recommended cuts. It may be that even just looking at the recommended cuts results in those guys being cut regardless of who you actually let go or whether you met the numerical requirement.

Thomas’ Drop Gives Panthers Payback

Unexpectedly, defense did not rule the night as the 2016 NFL season kicked off with Thursday night’s Mile High rematch of Super Bowl 50. More accurately, although neither team ran the ball very well, the opposing quarterbacks largely had their way with two of the most vaunted defenses of a season ago. 2015 MVP Cam Newton came a yard shy of a 400 yard game and fired 4 TD’s, while unproven Trevor Siemien, with one exception, gave Carolina’s rookie corners a workout, posting a 116.6 rating as he completed 24 of 34 attempts for 315 yards and 3 touchdowns- but a costly pick was also included in his stat line.

It was a game of ebb and flow, as the Broncos failed to generate a first down before falling behind 14-0 on Newton’s TD passes to Devin Funchess and Kelvin Benjamin. But Denver’s second possession wrapped with Siemien’s first TD, a 44 yard catch and run by Demaryius Thomas, would would later play the pivotal role in the final outcome. That score ignited a stretch in which the Broncos outscored the Panthers 27-3 through midway through the third quarter. But with the Broncos failing to find the end zone for most of the second half, the Panthers were able to claw their way back into the contest, taking a 31-30 lead when Jonathan Stewart scored from 9 yards out with 9:17 left in the game. It was in the subsequent series that Siemien was picked off by rookie James Bradberry, and Carolina parlayed the takeaway into Newton’s 13 yard TD pass to Greg Olsen with 4:51 to go, leaving the Broncos needing a touchdown and a two point conversion just to gain a tie. After a quick exchange of punts, Denver got the touchdown part on Siemien’s 5 yard toss to Bennie Fowler with the clock down to 30 ticks, but on the fateful try for two, the normally reliable Thomas dropped a pass that Siemien put right in his breadbasket, assuring that the contest would not go into overtime and giving the Panthers the payback they had been waiting seven months for.

Very nice Muddy! I like the highlight video, nice little musical addition. Are you still liking your sliders? I've tried a combo of Flazko's blue and purple sets to lower QB accuracy and up the human running game while I continue to set week 1 rosters and depth charts. I went with EA's roster and am adding and the missing players using roverts' roster. A lot of work, but maybe this is the year I get back into reporting!

Looking forward to the Rams matchup. Hopefully you do better than they did last night.

Game Notes
Who thought it would be a good idea to make this one of the first MNFB games of the season? The game's not even in LA! ESPN viewers will be treated to Case Keenum vs. Blaine Gabbert because the hope that the other SF QB would flourish in Chip Kelly's system has yet to be realized, and because Jared Goff was deemed unworthy of even suiting up for the Rams. If Todd Gurley and Carlos Hyde can't carry to load for their respective teams, this one could be a real snoozer, especially for East Coast viewers up past their bed time.

One regular season game is hard to judge by which is why I started with a "game of the week". I do think I'm going to lower QBA on both sides. Denver's secondary should have done a little better vs. Cam and Siemien maybe not so good. I have a feeling the human running game may need a boost but I'm also taking the Carolina D into consideration.

Glad you liked the video. I'm aiming for a NFL Films feel to them.

Rams were turrible last night. Not surprised the O struggled but the D missed the plane.
