Re: Wolverines vs. The World || A Michigan Wolverines Dynasty (NCAA14)
Thorough Domination #19 Michigan finds their defense, trouncing San Jose State 48-16
Ann Arbor, MI - From the first kickoff all the way to the last snap, the Michigan Wolverines left no doubt they would cruise to victory. Led by a monster game from RB Drake Johnson and a defense that allowed only 130 yards of total offense, the Wolverines smashed the San Jose Spartans, 48-16.
With RB Drake Johnson getting the start over De'Veon Smith, Johnson showed the explosive burst that made him a Michigan fan favorite, showing off his spectacular vision and running with authority. On the first drive, Michigan marched down the field almost exclusively on shotgun running plays. On the goal line, a toss play gave Johnson and the Wolverines a 7-0 lead three minutes into the quarter. Stopping the Spartans downfield, San Jose State got on the board by way of a 58-yard field goal that was mashed by Austin Lopez.
Michigan continued to run the ball at will, but their inability to establish an efficient passing game stalled some drives. Kenny Allen nailed a 29-yarder to put Michigan up 10-3 with three minutes left in the first. To close off the scoring in the quarter, RB De'Veon Smith broke a tackle and sprinted to the outside on a one-yard run. 17-3, Michigan.
Ending up with the ball shortly afterward due to DT Chris Wormley forcing a fumble, the Wolverines started the second quarter with yet another Kenny Allen field goal. After another three-and-out by San Jose State, QB Jake Rudock made his first big mistake: turning the ball over early in a drive. Calling for a play-action pass out of the shotgun, he tried to check down to De'Veon Smith, but CB Jeremy Pruitt jumped the route and returned it for a pick-6.
Michigan would not take long to respond, only needing less than a minute to retaliate. After a few big runs, the Jake-2-Jake combo of Rudock and Butt connected, as TE Jake Butt caught a ball in traffic, broke two tackles, and waltzed into the endzone for a 29-yard touchdown. San Jose State would proceed to drive down the field, but this time they were stopped and Austin Lopez shanked a field goal to give Michigan the ball back. Not long afterwards, QB Jake Rudock threw a dime to WR Amara Darboh, who extended into the endzone for a 10-yard score. At the half, the score is already 34-10.
"We played a hell of a first half, and we exectued everything perfectly," said Ty Johns. "It's great to see us play good, you feel?"
The Wolverines started off the second half on the wrong foot. Calling the same play that gave CB Jeremy Pruitt a pick-6 earlier, Pruitt once again jumped the short route, broke tackle attempts from De'Veon Smith, Jake Rudock, and carried an offensive lineman into the endzone. Going for two, the Spartans couldn't convert. Despite all that, at the end of the third it's 34-16.
Michigan placed its backups in during the fourth quarter, and we caught a glimpse of redshirt freshman QB Wilton Speight, who looked more composed in the pocket than Rudock. Early in the quarter, Speight hit a wide open WR Freddy Canteen in the endzone, putting the Wolverines up 41-16. With San Jose State seemingly have given up, Michigan stopped them with ease. On their next drive, RB Derrick Green cut back on a 7-yard rush to the endzone, putting Michigan up 48-16.
Michigan proceeded to "mess around", going with crazy substitutions whilst milking the clock. We saw true freshman QB Zach Gentry get some snaps, and while they were only designed QB runs, he still was able to get 40 yards on only four carries. Junior FS Dymonte Thomas, who played running back in high school, got two carries and turned them into 20 yards. In the end, Michigan wins it by a HUGE margin.
Post Game Press Conference:
"What explains your decision to start Drake Johnson over De'Veon Smith, who has been performing well lately?" "Look at his statline today. There's your answer."
"That didn't answer my question-"
"Yes, it did. Drake's been doing well in practice, and De'Veon will probably go back to starting next week. There's your answer."
"Is there a quarterback controversy? You took out Jake Rudock pretty early in the second half, and Wilton Speight held his own in place."
"Jake's been turnover-prone this season. No way around it. But at this point, no. It's always good to get reps for your backups, and I believe the game was already out of reach."
"Next week, you face a 1-1 Northwestern squad who's posting better numbers than your Michigan squad. What do you see?"
"I see a victory."
"Bold prediction there. What makes you so sure?"
"Just wait and see."

Re: Wolverines vs. The World || A Michigan Wolverines Dynasty (NCAA14)
Marching On #19 Michigan beats Northwestern, 24-12, behind Rudock's big day
Ann Arbor, MI - Make that 4-0 for Coach Johns and the Wolverines.
Led by an efficient Jake Rudock performance and a huge day on the ground by De'Veon Smith, Michigan held on to beat the Northwestern Wildcats. Rudock finished 22-29 for 227 yards, throwing three touchdown passes and and an interception. Smith ran 26 times for 140 yards but did not score a touchdown.
Despite Michigan losing the time-of-possession battle, tonight's game marked a significant change in their offense. This season, Michigan has run the spread offense on the regular, but with conference play beginning, they switched back to MANBALL, establishing a power running game. However, they did display some spread elements, as they spread the field using five-wide sets at some points during the game as well as a few option plays.
Most of the game was tightly contested, but the game never seemed in doubt for the Wolverines. After throwing a pick in the redzone on Michigan's first drive, Rudock responded with fire, tossing dimes left and right. De'Veon Smith chipped in some nice runs as well, and to open the scoring Rudock hit Amara Darboh on a slant for a three yard touchdown.
Both teams would grind it out, but neither side would score in the second quarter until Michigan staged a goal-line stand and held Northwestern to a 20-yard field goal. The Wolverines would strike last before the half, as Rudock hit freshman Brian Cole on an all-out bomb in which Cole managed to get one foot in in the back of the endzone. At the half, Michigan commanded a 14-3 lead.
"Brian's slowly earning more snaps," said Michigan head coach Ty Johns. "The guy's been a stud for us lately."
Cole finished with 3 catches, 44 yards, and of course, that touchdown.
The second half, while exciting, further showcased the Wolverines' dominance of the game. Michigan scored first towards the end of the quarter by way of a Kenny Allen 53-yarder. However, Northwestern didn't waste their time striking back, as less than a minute later, Clayton Thorson threw an absolute bomb, as Christian Jones burned Jabrill Peppers, broke a Jarrod Wilson tackle, and dragged a stumbling Peppers into the endzone for a 78-yard score.
"I'd be lying to you if I told you I didn't think he [Peppers] would intercept that," said Jones. "I guess you can say I'm lucky." *laughs*
However, the Wildcats couldn't get the spark they needed on offense. Despite torching Michigan through the air and gaining yards through chunk plays, once in the red zone their offense stalled. After being stopped on the goal line on downs, Michigan launched an aerial attack to begin the fourth quarter, mixing in some big De'Veon Smith runs along the way. All that culminated into another three-yard touchdown pass, this time to Jehu Chesson, to put the Wolverines up 24-10 early in the fourth. Northwestern would respond by driving down the field, but it did not end well for the Wildcats, as on fourth and goal with under three minutes to go, Channing Stribling crushed any chance of a comeback, tipping the pass and intercepting it in bounds.
However, Stribling's decision to try and run it back bit Michigan in an embarrassing way; After Stribling intercepted it, he tried to return it, but he ran out of bounds at the two-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Rudock was sacked in the endzone on a play-action pass, and there goes two points to Northwestern. Moral victory?
Northwestern couldn't do anything with one last shot, and Michigan, in classless fashion, ran a play-action pass to Jake Butt that went for 45 yards. Afterwards, Michigan rolled into victory formation and caught the W.
Visitor Watch:
Michigan's top two recruiting targets, four-star quarterback Stephen Bentley (Toccoa, GA) and four-star wide receiver Jermaine McKeon (Fort Stewart, GA) took their official visit to Ann Arbor.
Both seemed to enjoy their visits, as evidenced by these tweets:
Punter target Will Little (Simpsonville, SC) was also in attendance.
Re: Wolverines vs. The World || A Michigan Wolverines Dynasty (NCAA14)
Since I am very distraught at the way Michigan lost this afternoon and the bevy of problems in my life at the moment, I'll be taking a break from this dynasty. Don't worry guys, I'll be back soon!
