P.J. FLECK NAMED CATHEDRAL HEAD COACH
P.J. Fleck has been named the replacement to recently retired George Pasey as head football coach of the Cathedral.
Fleck, 34, becomes the Spartans' second head coach in the program's brief history that began just six years ago.
"We are very excited to welcome P.J. Fleck to the family," UC athletic director David Martin said. "Fleck, we feel, stands out in many ways, and ultimately is the man we wanted to have lead this football program."
Fleck, who resigned at Western Michigan after just two seasons, began his coaching career in 2008 as a graduate assistant at Ohio State. Proceeding stints included tenures at Northern Illinois, his alma mater, followed by Rutgers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
With Western Michigan, Fleck compiled a record of 6-18 through two seasons that while fell short of expectations, provided much promise - especially on the recruiting trail where the Fleck averaged a top half recruiting class in each of his two seasons.
TOWNSEND III MIGHT STICK AROUND
Tight end Howard Townsend III was a class act for Cathedral, and he might just be sticking around for a couple more seasons - not to play, but to coach.
Recently retired head coach George Pasey encouraged the move, sending out a good word to his precede, P.J. Fleck.
"Howard is a leader on and off the field, a guy we like to model this program after," Pasey said. "Watching him develop over the years was awesome. He's a guy that completely committed himself to this football team. A guy who you just knew would be coaching on the sidelines one day."
Townsend has indicated his interest as returning as a graduate assistant, where he would join Fleck's to-be-named staff. FLECK NAMES COORDINATORS, STAFF
Aaron Price will coordinate the offense at Cathedral, while Ken Delgado will be put in charge with the defense, head coach P.J. Fleck announced on Monday. Both coaches come to Cathedral following one year stands at Hawaii. Notably named on Fleck's staff was former tight end Howard Townsend III, who will embark his coaching career as a graduate assistant.
