SPARTANS FALL AT UL LAFAYETTE
Nov 23, 2013After winning in Louisiana last week, Cathedral returned for more Saturday only to come up beyond short in a 37-17 loss against UL Lafayette at Cajun Field.
The Spartans struggled to gets its offense going while ULL jumped to a quick 14-0 first quarter start. While the run was effective behind freshman Casey Leuck, Cathedral continued to favor the pass. Meanwhile, the Ragin' Cajuns expanded their lead with another explosive, 16-point second quarter to take a 30-0 lead at halftime.
Cathedral held ULL off the board in the third quarter while adding 15 points of their own behind a 72-yard punt return by Diante Dobzinski followed by fullback Adrian Gates' five-yard score (successful 2-pt followup). The Spartans' coaching staff notably made a change at quarterback, replacing a struggling George Pasey Jr. for Devron Fritz. ULL would add a 31-yard touchdown pass from Terrance Broadway to Ricky Johnson in the fourth, and Cathedral closed scoring with a safety with 1:10 remaining.
What It Means: Cathedral drops back down to .500 at 5-5. With this being their transition year, the Spartans are ineligible for post-season bowl games.
Notable: Both teams recorded a team safety, with ULL's coming in the second quarter and Cathedral's in the fourth. Cathedral's was their first of the season ... Dobzinski, Cathedral's lead cornerback, also took snaps at wide receiver for the first time of the season, finishing with two receptions (one fumbled) ... George Pasey was replaced with Devron Fritz early in the second half, a time in which the Spartans looked more toward an option offense ... Freshman running back Casey Leuck started in his second straight game, but split carries with Myles Brady and Davion Cobbs ... Cathedral lost the following players to injury: wide receiver Lorenzo Beard Jr. (back, did not return).
Up Next: Cathedral returns home to face South Alabama (3-6, 2-2) next week at the Georgia Dome.
Spartans junior slot receiver Lorenzo Beard Jr. will miss up to three weeks with backs spasms, coach George Pasey announced Tuesday. Beard was helped off the field midway through the second quarter last week against UL Lafeyette and would not return. The 5-foot-9 receiver has hauled in 24 receptions this season for 319 yards (13.3 yds per catch) and a touchdown. Beard's return timetable will sideline him for the season's remainder with the Spartans being ineligible for post-season bowl games due to FBS transition.
never even heard of cathedral. What pants did you use in the teambuilder? I didn't think you could do text down the side like that. The uniform is a great look.
