2013 Cleveland Browns Preview
The Cleveland Browns 2013 preseason didn't go well. Haslam was outed as the owner by a true fan of the Browns before the season. This marked a new era in the franchise, with a new owner at the head of the franchise. The team also had a new head coach in Rob Chudzinski; one of the few things that came from the Haslam era. After a disappointing offseason, the team didn't see much improvement. It will be a hard-fought battle to do better than the 5-11 season last year. The young players on the team didn't show much potential in the 1-3 preseason. The five-player draft produced only one starting level player in Barkevious Mingo. However, four of the five players drafted remained on the team heading into week one. The free agent signings had a big impact. Paul Kruger and Desmond Bryant brought a lot of talent to the defense. Hope for Browns fan came when Nathan Clayton promised success under his control as the owner. Will it work? Does lifelong fandom translate to success as an owner?
Offense
The Browns offense was not promising in the preseason. They only scored around 18 points per game, had 154 passing yards per game, and had 156 rushing yards per game. The biggest struggle for the Browns offense was third down conversions, only 27% of the time they converted third downs for a first down. The Browns continued to struggle at the quarterback position. No quarterback showed starting level talent. Weeden, Hoyer, and Thigpen looked constantly flustered and inaccurate. Interceptions came often and accurate passes were rare. The running game was very successful. Brandon Jackson was the most impressive performer, rushing for 132 yards on 13 attempts. Trent Richardson also had a good preseason, rushing for 162 yards on 28 attempts. In the receiving game, Josh Gordon led the way with 136 yards and 10 receptions. The starters on the offensive line were extremely impressive but the talent dropped off from there.
Defense
The Browns defense was one of the worst. They shut down the run game, only allowing 242 yards. However, Pass defense was rough, allowing 1215 yards. The outside linebackers position showed the most talent. Quentin Groves had 5 sacks and led the defense in tackles with 21. Barkevious Mingo had only 1 sack and finished second in total tackles with 20. The Browns biggest offseason move, Paul Kruger, finished with 13 tackles and 4 sacks. Both Buster Skrine and Christopher Owens will be in a battle for the second cornerback spot; both finished with 2 interceptions. A player that was the most surprising was backup middle linebacker Craig Robertson who had 3 interceptions.
Special Teams
The Browns have new special teamers in Billy Cundiff and Spencer Lanning. The Browns decided on Lanning early on while the starting kicking job was a battle. The Browns decided that Billy Cundiff was the starting kicker after a battle between Shayne Graham and Caleb Sturgis. Andre Ellington was given a chance at returning kicks, but Travis Benjamin most likely will be the starting returner for the Browns this season.
