Nick Marshall runs through Penn A&T, Auburn wins 66-21

FB Nick Wright doesn't get many looks, but when he does, he makes them count

AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn Tigers defeated the Pennsylvania A&T Fightin Dutchmen 66-21 at Jordan Hare Stadium on Saturday.

Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall put on a career performance against the first-year program, passing for 202 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 257 yards and three more scores.

The Penn A&T defense made it started this game on a positive note, stuffing the Tiger offense on four downs after they elected to go for it in their opponent’s side of the field. the Fighting Dutchmen would march down the field, all the way to the Auburn one yard line before a tackle for loss and an interception in the end zone halted any scoring chances.

On the very first play of the Tigers’ ensuing drive, Marshall took a read option to the right side and blew passed two defenders for an 80-yard touchdown run, starting off what would be a historic performance.

One Penn A&T play to note happened right before halftime. Marshall scrambled to the right side being chased down by defenders. Dutchmen linebacker Thad Spears came from behind and knocked the ball out of Marshall’s hand and it was recovered by Thomas Bennett.

On the second play of that next drive, a play-action pass from Teague found Arthur Dorsey 45 yards downfield and Clarence Jones capped it off from three yards away. That would be Penn A&T’s final score of the day.

Ouch lots of points given up..Not unexpected though against a team like Auburn. I would look at the good of the game and you being able to score a couple of teams in a uneven game. Games like this to me make it more enjoyable when you team starts to get good because of they are built

Doesn't look like Auburn wanted to take their foot off the gas with a long TD in the 4th. Expected result there though.

The beauty of this game was, I actually liked how our defense was playing. Nick Marshall truly shredded us. The fact that we were able to force some stops on them early and through the second quarter was a sign of good things for the defense. Thanks for checking in.

Re: Pennsylvania A&T (NCAA 14 Teambuilder Dynasty)

Here at The Daily Dutchman (A Penn A&T institutional publication), we have dedicated a weekly section for our athletic programs to get highlighted.

Coaches Corner:
Here, Penn A&T Head Football Coach Tim Keyser will do a quick (honest) breakdown of last week's performance followed by a rundown of their upcoming opponent.

Tim Keyser:
[On blowout loss to Auburn]
I know most of you did not expect much from this one, if anything you're probably shocked we scored 21. That's a sign of things for our future. Look, that game was scheduled late for both teams and I'm sure many ask why we would play a team of that caliber. We're the new kids on the block, we understand we're going to take some thumps early, it is part of the process and we learned a lot from last week. Our defense is definitely better than our numbers show, guys just need to work on being in the right position. We will be better.

[Midseason thoughts]
I'll be honest with you. I don't have many thoughts for you thus far. It is hard to gain an identity when you are playing from behind in the first quarter. We make mistakes like every team does, we just seem to make them at a consistent pace; again, growing pains of a new program. I am in course impressed with how our guys have not quit in an any game this year. Being that we are so young, it can be difficult for guys to buy in when we're getting pounded week in and week out. This group has gone above and beyond in not questioning us and our decisions. Even when we're down late, we still run our offense. Run to setup the pass. It's a simple process and while we struggle at times (most of the time), we as a staff have seen progress for the most part.

[On Temple]
Through six games, we have had one game where I was truly happy with how we performed. We'll we're on the downhill for the rest of the season and after last week, we are starting off with an opponent more to our level. Being in state with Temple, this is a meaningful game for us. I see this as our "statement game."

Matt Rhule is in his first year in charge at Temple but before being the boss man, he was their offensive coordinator. He was the second person, besides my parents, to call me an congratulate me on getting this job and wished me luck, goodness that was three years ago already and now he is in charge of the Owls. Being that I was previously at West Chester, me and coach Rhule have a previous friendship and this one will be fun. Their multiple style offense is based on the run and they have a work horse of a back. Stopping Harper will be essential if we want a chance at being competitive. As you've seen, stopping the run has been our downfall early. Unfortunate for them, they are out their stud wideout Jalen Fitzpatrick but they certainly have other weapons we will need to watch in the passing game.

On defense, they have arguably on the best linebacking cores on the east coast. Caponegro, Nate Smith, and Tyler Matakevich are all fast and smart. It will be tough to get around them. All in all, top to bottom I could see why we are the underdog here. However, I like our chances to compete and thats all we as a staff have asked for out of our guys and they've given it to us at this point.

Re: Pennsylvania A&T (NCAA 14 Teambuilder Dynasty)

Conditions too much for Penn A&T, Temple wins 48-28

Floyd Wilson got the scoring started after beating the defense over the top

LANCASTER, Pa. - Temple defeated Pennsylvania A&T 48-28 in a rainy contest on Saturday.

The Temple Owls put up 543 yards of total offense, led by running back Kenny Harper who rushed for 161 yards on 21 carries, while scoring two touchdowns. Quarterback Connor Reily complete 23 of 31 passes for 286 yards and three scores to go with his 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The visitors had a methodical drive to open the game, taking off nearly two minutes of the clock before Harper scored from four yards away; however Jim Cooper Jr. would miss the extra point, making it 6-0.

Penn A&T used their next drive to make a statement and take the lead. Quarterback Ritchy Teague used a play-action to fool the defense when he found tight end Floyd Wilson over the top giving them the early 7-6 advantage.

However, the Owls did not seem phased, marching back down the field scoring less than two minutes later when Reily hit Brett Pierce on an under route and he walked into the end zone.

To start the second half, Teague led the offense down the field. He got sacked for a seven yard loss and had to leave briefly after getting the wind knocked out of him. So entered former starter, Tyler Ruberio. After his first pass fly incomplete, the sophomore found Arthur Dorsey in the back of the end zone all-alone to regain the one-point advantage, 14-13.

Temple again would lull the Dutchmen defense to sleep, pounding the rock with Harper before he eventually scored from five yards away to give them the 20-14 lead.

Clifton Moss had other plans, returning the ensuing kick for a touchdown again giving the Fighting Dutchmen the lead, this time 21-20.

The Owls knew they had nothing to fear, this time using the pass to make Penn A&T feel depleted. Reily found Pierce for a 37-yard connection early in the drive before the quarterback hit tight end Alex Jackson from six yards out to regain the lead, 27-21.

After Temple forced a punt, Penn A&T used the bend not don't break enigma. Allowing the visitors to get down to the Dutchmen two yard line, the hosts defense came up big forcing their opponents to turn it over on downs. Nothing doing for Penn A&T in the final minute and they would trail by six at halftime.

The constant rain that fell during the first half increased over the break and seemed to have seriously tampered with Teague’s ability to lead the offense. Before being benched in the fourth quarter, he went 4-15 in the second half, including an interception.

That pick would come in the Dutchmen’ s second drive of the half when the ball noticeably slipped out of his hands and into those of Temple linebacker Nate Smith. Five plays later, highlighted by a 49-yard scamper from Harper, the back would score from five yards out again, giving the Owls a 34-21 lead. The hosts would never get any closer.

The Fighting Dutchmen are idle next week before returning to action when they travel to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Kentucky Wildcats for a 2:30p.m. kickoff. The Wildcats are currently 3-3 and will be the second of three SEC opponents that Penn A&T will face this season.
