Texas State at Texas Tech

Douglas Coleman recovers a fumble by Texas State's Elijah King

Texas Tech Holds On

Lubbock, TX -- The Texas Tech Red Raiders handed Texas State its first loss of the season, mainly on the arm of their quarterback Patrick Mahomes, winning 28-21. He threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns.

Things looked good for Texas State as they scored on the opening drive with relative ease. Stedman Mayberry scored on a 2 yard run. But the same could be said of Texas Tech, who would answer on the next drive with a touchdown run of their own by Justin Stockton. Then Texas State answered that with another score by Mayberry. Texas Tech looked to tie things back up and start a classic shootout, but Mahomes was intercepted. The Bobcats almost capitalized on the turnover and pull ahead comfortably, but Elijah King fumbled near the goal line.

The next score came in the 3rd quarter, as Stockton ran in for a 4 yard touchdown and tied it 14-14. After a Tyler Jones interception, one of his three on the day, Texas Tech scored again as Mahomes found Cameron Batson in the end zone. After the 14-0 run, things looked bleak for Texas State. But Jones hit P.J. Anderson on a 56 yard bomb for a touchdown.

With the score tied 21-21, Mahomes led another successful drive and scored on a 40 yard screen pass to Stockton. This would prove to put too much pressure on Jones, as he threw his final interception and sealed a Red Raider victory.

"I feel like we had a good chance to go 3-0 tonight", said Bobcats head coach Everett Withers. "But we didn't finish our job and the result is what you see."

Texas State beat the Red Raiders in yardage and time of possession, but all that matters in the end is the scoreboard.

Next up, the Bobcats host Wyoming in San Marcos.

Enjoyed reading this so far. Texas State isnt a very good team (based on their record this year and when I watched my Cougars beat them 64-3) but its cool to see them 2-1 on the season. Will be following.

Thanks for the support! Yeah Texas State is one of the lowest rated teams in the 2016 season. It'll get tough this season.

Matchup Preview *|* September 28, 2016
@
Wyoming Cowboys
(2-2, 1-1 Away)
Texas State Bobcats
(2-1, 2-0 Home)
Game Notes
Texas State looks to bounce back from their road loss against TTU. Wyoming is rated higher than Texas State, so a road win is quite possible for them.
