Wyoming at Texas State

Wyoming smothers the Texas State offense

Cowboys Corral The Bobcats

San Marcos, TX -- Tyler Jones threw three interceptions as they fell to the Wyoming Cowboys 28-23.

"I was definitely feeling a little off", said Jones. "I've faced much better defenses this season, but I couldn't get anything working."

It looked to be another easy win for Texas State as their defense scored a safety on Wyoming's opening drive. But the Bobcats couldn't capitalize on the next possession, and Wyoming got the ball back. They scored with a 1 yard run by Brian Hill, who scored two touchdowns on the day.

Texas State would keep up with Wyoming for the most part, but too many turnovers kept Wyoming in control of the game. Cowboys quarterback Nick Smith ended up with a 154.5 quarterback rating, throwing for 258 yards and two touchdowns. By comparison, Jones ended with 183 yards and three touchdowns, but it was too little too late.

"We can't start this sort of trend", said Bobcats coach Everett Withers. "We have the means to win these games, but we need to stop with the turnovers."

Next week Texas State begins conference play against the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana, and they'll need to fix these problems ASAP.

Texas State Lands Another Recruit

Another Texan committed to the Bobcats. This time a much needed fullback.

Greg's Opinion

Bobcats Show True Colors
By Greg Tolbertson

We got a much better idea of how good Texas State's football team is when they came back down to earth and followed their two game winning streak with a two game losing one. After Wyoming took care of the Bobcats, it's safe to say we didn't see the best of Southern Miss on opening day. And dare I say, Texas State football is developing an identity. But it's an identity they don't want. We've got a head coach who is learning that this is going to be much tougher than he wanted to believe, a quarterback who seems to telegraph his passes, and a defense that can't perform while playing from behind.

Is it already time to hit the panic button? Maybe not. We haven't even begun Conference play and that record is still 0-0. But if this team is going to continue with this level of play, we may be looking at a conference that is set to chew them up. They open against the Ragin' Cajuns of ULL, a team that can do just that.

My hope is that the Bobcats turn this around, because we don't deserve to endure yet another handful of lean years. Let's all pray that the Withers era is better than this.

Matchup Preview *|* October 5, 2016
@
Texas State Bobcats
(2-2, 1-1 Away)
Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns
(2-2, 2-0 Home)
Game Notes
Both teams are 2-2, But Louisiana has a big home field advantage. Texas State needs to step up their run game, or else it could be a long day in Lafayette.

Texas State at Louisiana-Lafayette

Elijah King finds the end zone for one of Texas State's many scores.

Ragin' Bobcats!

Lafayette, LA -- Texas State went into a hostile Cajun Field Saturday and destroyed the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns by the score of 41-18. Bobcat quarterback Tyler Jones seemed like a rejuvenated man as he went 24-35 for 301 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.

"We didn't do anything different this week", said Jones. "But coach O'Bradovich told me to settle down, focus, and don't try to do too much out there. The task at hand was to play our game, but not try to force anything."

Halfback Stedman Mayberry also had a big day with three touchdowns.

"I trust my offensive line", said Mayberry. "If we need a first down on short yardage or a touchdown at the goal line, consider it done."

The offense was clicking so well that eight different players caught passes for yardage, with P.J. Anderson leading the way with 115 yards on the day. But the unsung heroes were the defense. With the exception of ULL scoring on their opening drive, the Bobcat D had an answer for everything, and the Cajuns had lost all momentum early in the game.

"This is a good way to begin conference play", said Bobcats head coach Everett Withers. "We can now look to next week and build off of what worked here and apply it to our next conference challenge."

That next challenge will be at home against Louisiana-Monroe.
