Re: Road to Redemption: Coach Jeff Callahan and the Colorado Buffaloes (NCAA 14/XBOX
RECRUITING UPDATE The Colorado Buffaloes have added to their 2014 recruiting class by signing two more prospects over the weekend. The two signees are; WR Bradley Moses *** 6’2”, 210 lbs Albert Lea, Minnesota HB Carlos Johnson ** 6’0”, 203 lbs Allen, Texas These additions are sure to boost the Colorado offense. Moses will join a unit that has become one of the Pac-12 Conference’s elite receiving corps, while Johnson will help boost a rushing attack that has been easily stopped at times. With these news signees, Colorado’s 2014 class is currently ranked 23rd nationally and 4th in the Pac-12.

GAME PREVIEW
Colorado Buffaloes Overall: 79 Offense: 83 Defense: 78 #23 Washington Huskies Overall: 91 Offense: 91 Defense: 90 Predicted Winner: Washington Predicted Score: 41–24 Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian In the 2006 Rose Bowl, which served as the BCS National Championship Game for the 2005 season, the USC Trojans and the Texas Longhorns traded touchdowns for four quarters. At the helm of the undefeated Trojans was Pete Carroll, while the undefeated Longhorns were (and still are) led by Mack Brown. Yet, in the 41–38 shootout, it was the offensive coordinators rather than the head coaches who ended up with most of the praise. When Texas QB Vince Young ran it in for the final touchdown, it was his then-offensive coordinator Jeff Callahan who called the play. And on the other sideline, offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian called the plays for USC. Now, Callahan and Sarkisian will have a chance to match wits yet again, this time as the head coaches of Colorado and Washington. Unlike their battle in 2006, the two men do not come into this game leading historically excellent teams. Colorado comes into this game at 4–4 in Callahan’s first year at the helm. It is surely an improvement already over last year’s 1–11 record, but the 1–4 conference record so far leaves much to be desired. In Washington’s case, it is Sarkisian’s fifth year at the helm, and the Huskies are looking for improvement. After going 5–7 in his first season, the Huskies have finished 7–6 three seasons in a row. Now, they stand at 5–3, ranked in the Top 25 by all three major polls, and in second place behind Oregon in the Pac-12 North. A 10-win season is within reach, but the final four games present some challenges. Colorado is likely going to be Washington’s easiest game for the rest of the season, so a loss here would be catastrophic. It is very easy to see how the offensive gurus have molded their teams this year. Colorado’s strength is its passing game, ranking 13th nationally in yards per game, while Washington’s is its rushing attack, also ranked 13th nationally in yards per game. In Washington’s case, the star player is junior HB Andre Williams, who has rushed so far this season for 790 yards in 130 attempts for 7 rushing TDs. He averages just below 100 yards per game and just above 6 yards per carry. He is not a highlight reel back, but he is reliable and effective. And considering Colorado’s rush defense is among the five worst in the nation, he should be able to have a field day. In terms of the quarterback situation, the Huskies are in a bit of a bind. Fifth-year senior QB David Martin, the starter, went out with an injury in their last game, against California. He will be out for seven weeks. In his place will start redshirt freshman QB Mike Brown, who has thrown for 286 total passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns and 1 interception as a backup so far this season. The offensive line is questionable, and they need to step up in a big way to protect Brown for his first career start. The Washington defense, meanwhile, should stack up well against the Buffaloes. Despite redshirt freshman QB Danny Roberts having a surprisingly solid year starting for Colorado, his effectiveness is limited by the weak offensive line. With such monsters on the defensive line as LE Mario Donaldson, DT Will Logan and DT Andre Johnson, Washington should have the men in place to sack Roberts early and often and disrupt the passing attack. Colorado has proven to be laughably easy to stop on the ground, so backup HB Robert Duncan will likely have a long day in Seattle. The Buffs have the advantage in terms of turnover differential, but that has proven to mean little when they are up against an opponent with superior talent. If they each had a loaded, elite roster at their disposal, Callahan and Sarkisian could put on a classic. However, this matchup is tilted heavily in Washington’s favor in terms of talent, skill and experience. With it being a home game, the Huskies can be expected to make out just fine. Expect some early trouble breaking in the new quarterback, but the strength of the Washington rushing attack should overwhelm Colorado and bring the Huskies bowl eligibility. |

GROUND AND POUND DOMINANT RUSHING ATTACK EARNS HUSKIES 59–17 WIN
Players of the Game Colorado Offense: WR Bobby Thornton Colorado Defense: MLB Sam Reed Washington Offense: QB Mike Brown Washington Defense: LE Mario Donaldson The Washington rushing attack gashed the Colorado defense The Washington Huskies have reached bowl eligibility by handing the Colorado Buffaloes their worst loss of the season. The Huskies defeated the Buffs by six touchdowns, and that included two late Colorado touchdowns against the second-team Washington defense that made the game seem closer than it really was. Washington dominated defensively, and their rushing attack absolutely gashed the Colorado defense. The Buffaloes were unable to stop a Washington drive until there was less than a minute left in the first half. Everything the Huskies touched turned to gold. After forcing a Colorado three-and-out to start, the Huskies rushed the ball down the field swiftly and effectively, with QB Mike Brown rushing it in 5 yards for the first touchdown of the game. After the Buffs went three-and-out again, the Huskies repeated, this time with HB Andre Williams rushing it into the end zone from 10 yards away. Colorado finally managed to move the ball a bit, but missed a 48-yard field goal. Washington came right back and capitalized with another Williams rushing touchdown which put them up by three scores. For the second game in a row, the Buffs have gone into the second quarter down 21–0. There was a slice of promise to start the second quarter, as a Colorado goal line stand forced a Washington field goal. However, the Buffs continued to fail at capitalizing on their possessions. And the Huskies only seemed to get better as the game went on. The Buffs were stopped, and then a 41-yard rush by Brown gave the Huskies another score. On their next drive – after stopping Colorado yet again – Brown tossed a 34-yard beauty to WR Shane Bailey and the Huskies were now up 38–0. Unfortunately for them, running back Williams went out of the game with a strained bicep, putting backup HB Joey Thomas on the field. Thomas ended up bruising his elbow two plays in, and the third man up was HB Daniel Ferwerda, who was solid but not spectacular for the remainder of the game. But the Huskies didn’t need him to be when their quarterback Brown rushed for 173 yards in the game, 9.6 yards per rush for 4 touchdowns. On their final drive of the game, the Buffaloes managed to score via a 22-yard field goal, a necessary step to avoid heading into halftime with a zero on the scoreboard. What they ended up with wasn’t much better; Washington led 38–3 going into halftime. Washington’s pass defense had Colorado QB Danny Roberts down early and often While the Huskies to some extent took their foot off the gas offensively to start the second half, their defense remained fearsome. LE Mario Donaldson was a monster, setting the new NCAA record for sacks in a game and severely impeding the Colorado passing attack. Nevertheless, the Buffaloes did have some highlights. QB Danny Roberts threw for 492 yards (a school record), but shockingly only one touchdown (though he also rushed for a touchdown). His lone passing touchdown came by virtue of a 67-yard bomb to stud WR Bobby Thornton, whose 5 receptions in the game earned the team 232 yards. Unfortunately for the Buffs, that wasn’t nearly enough to keep up with the Huskies. Though Colorado scored via two passing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the Huskies kept up with two more rushing touchdowns. There was nothing Colorado could do as they sunk further and further behind. 59–17 seemed merciful; Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian could’ve named the score. This was an impressive win for Washington. Though Colorado is a definite cellar dweller in the Pac-12, domination to this degree always makes a team look good. The victory keeps the Huskies alive in the race for the Pac-12 North, though they still need to be rooting for Oregon to lose twice more for that to even be possible. For Colorado, this loss means that the Buffaloes have to go 2–1 in their final three games to go bowling. With USC and Utah closing out the season, next week’s game against California is crucial to keep those hopes alive. Coach Jeff Callahan and defensive coordinator Alvin Gresham must find a way to plug the holes on defense for this team to have any hopes of reaching 5 – let alone 6 – wins. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Urban Meyer started his tenure as Ohio State’s head coach by reeling off 20 straight wins, but now the Buckeyes have suffered their first loss since 2011 – and it was a bad one. The Michigan State Spartans were 3–5 going into the game, and the Buckeyes traveled to Spartan Stadium as the heavy favorites. The game was competitive throughout: tied 14–14 at the end of the first quarter, Spartans up 28–24 at halftime, Spartans up 35–32 to close the third and finally pulling out the win 42–37. The upset loss has all but killed the Buckeyes’ national title ambitions, and the team fell from No. 2 to No. 12 in both the Coaches and AP polls. The team has a chance to rebound against 18 Illinois, who is undefeated in conference play. If Ohio State can down Illinois, then beat Indiana, they will enter the Michigan game with a chance to wrap up a division title. This time, the top spot in the SEC West was on the line yet again. LSU fought hard and were ahead of the defending national champions 10–7 going into halftime. Late in the fourth quarter, Alabama was up 14–13 and LSU was driving down the field. Just when LSU was about to toss the ball into the end zone, a Bama 95-yard pick-six sealed the game for the Tide. Now, the team is 9–0 and preparing to travel to Starkville to face 14 Mississippi State, who was barely beaten by Texas A&M in an overtime shootout over the weekend. If the Tide survive the Bulldogs, they will have officially won the SEC West.OTHER UPCOMING GAMES Wyoming at 2 Boise State 4 Georgia at Auburn Iowa State at 5 Oklahoma Utah at 6 Oregon 23 Northwestern at 7 Michigan 10 Georgia Tech at Clemson Oregon State at 11 Arizona State Oklahoma State at 13 Texas Wisconsin at 16 Nebraska TCU at 17 Kansas State Washington State at 19 Arizona 20 Washington at 21 UCLA Maryland at 22 Virginia Tech 24 Miami FL at Duke Stanford at 25 USC California at Colorado |

Re: Road to Redemption: Coach Jeff Callahan and the Colorado Buffaloes (NCAA 14/XBOX
CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVE presented by ESPN Week 12, 2013 Note: Championship Drive uses the BCS standings rather than the Coaches Poll. Welcome to ESPN’s Championship Drive. We’ve now got a new Top 2 in our BCS standings. Thanks to Ohio State’s loss to Michigan State, the Boise State Broncos have moved up to No. 2, right behind Alabama. We had a feeling that one of our undefeated teams would go down, and one of them did. Now, the Tide and the Broncos seem decently secure. Bama has a tough game this weekend against Mississippi State, and potentially tough games against Auburn and in the SEC Championship. However, the Tide have proven more than able to meet every challenge that has faced them this season. It would be foolish to predict them to lose. Boise State, on the other hand, hasn’t been extremely impressive but has a very easy remaining schedule. Their only difficult remaining game is likely to be the Mountain West title game, and they’ve already beaten their likely opponent – Fresno State – by three touchdowns earlier this season. Meanwhile, the race for No. 3 has heated up. If either Alabama or Boise State were to go down, Notre Dame and Georgia are waiting. The Fighting Irish made it into last year’s BCS title game by virtue of an undefeated record. Now, the Irish stand at 9–1 and both of their remaining opponents have losing records. The Irish get a bye week to prepare and then should have no trouble getting to 11–1. Yet, Georgia has two major chances to jump the Irish. If Georgia can beat No. 9 Georgia Tech and then take down Alabama in Atlanta, it is very likely that the Dawgs could make the national championship. But that depends on avoiding upsets against Auburn and Kentucky, which is concerning for an upset-prone team like Georgia. Elsewhere in the standings, Oklahoma has moved to No. 5 despite two losses. The Sooners face upset-minded Iowa State this weekend but should survive. It is difficult to see a 10–2 team competing for the national championship this season, especially with capable one-loss teams still being in contention. No. 6 Michigan, for example, stands at 8–1 and has the potential to beat four ranked teams in their next four games. They face Northwestern this weekend, 8–2 Iowa next Saturday and close with Ohio State. There is then a potential Big Ten Championship game to consider. The Wolverines haven’t been elite the past few years, but have come out strong this season and have a chance to surprise a lot of people. At this point in the season, it seems pretty clear that Alabama and Boise State control their own destiny. With Alabama being so talented and Boise State’s schedule being so easy from here, it is likely that the two teams will meet and compete for it all, which would probably be very good news for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
