COACH CALLAHAN ADDRESSES PAC–12 MEDIA DAYS

Hollywood, CA – Pac-12 Conference head football coaches, along with some star players, assembled in Southern California to discuss the coming season with members of the media. Representing the University of Colorado Buffaloes were head coach Jeff Callahan, redshirt freshman quarterback Danny Roberts and senior defensive end Reggie Tolbert. Below is the transcript of Coach Callahan’s opening remarks:

“Good morning everyone. It’s my privilege to be here with you representing a great university and an outstanding group of young men. I came to Boulder in March and I didn’t know what to expect. These are guys who’ve been told that they’re no good, nothing’s to be expected from them. But I found a group of guys with character, determination and heart – and those three things are what we need to become a championship program.

When I first started coaching, Colorado was an elite program. There is no reason why we can’t get back there. This year’s team is young. Danny’s going to be our starting quarterback and he’s yet to take a snap in a college game. We’ve got guys like Reggie here who are upperclassmen, but most of them are on defense so while we’re going to rely on them, we need new leaders to step up on the offensive side of the ball. We need to create a foundation which can benefit the program for years to come, and that will be done this year.”

As part of the event, members of the media annually vote on projected conference standings for the coming season. The journalists assembled chose Stanford to repeat as conference champions, with Oregon receiving the second most votes. UCLA was picked to win the South Division. Colorado was chosen to come in last in the South Division.

Projected Conference Champion
Stanford Cardinal

Projected North Division Standings
1 Stanford
2 Oregon
3 Oregon State
4 Washington
5 California
6 Washington State

Projected South Division Standings
1 UCLA
2 Arizona State
3 USC
4 Utah
5 Arizona
6 Colorado

COLORADO BUFFALOES 2013 SEASON PREVIEW
EXPECT MODEST IMPROVEMENT IN CALLAHAN’S FIRST YEAR

2013 PROJECTED RECORD
5–7 (2–7 Pac–12)

Game-by-Game Projections
vs. Colorado State – WIN
Central Arkansas – WIN
Fresno State – WIN
at Oregon State – LOSS
Oregon – LOSS
at Arizona State – LOSS
Arizona – LOSS
at UCLA – LOSS
at Washington – LOSS
California – WIN
USC – LOSS
at Utah – WIN

The beginning of the Jeff Callahan era in Boulder is giving many Buffalo fans a reason to be excited. That’s warranted, but their expectations need to be tempered: Callahan has a very tall task in front of him. With his reputation as one of the best X’s and O’s coaches in the game, improvement can be expected. But with a youthful roster and challenging schedule, the best that can be hoped for is the laying of a solid foundation that can be built upon in seasons to come. A strong defense will keep the Buffs in a lot of games, but the talent differential is too vast for them to contend in the South Division.

The one nice aspect of Colorado’s schedule is that the Buffaloes are allowed to ease into conference play. Of their three nonconference games, only Fresno State is more talented than them on paper. Colorado State and Central Arkansas are the perfect games for Coach Callahan and his staff to work out some of the kinks. However, what comes after is brutal.

After a merciful bye week to prepare, the Buffs run the gauntlet. Their next five opponents all won 8 or more games last season, and while that is not a perfect indicator of future success, it gives all of those teams a head start on Colorado coming into the year. The easiest conference game on the schedule, a home game against California, is sandwiched in between games against the offensive coordinators who were on the other sideline in Callahan’s most famous game: the 2005 national championship between Texas and USC. Undoubtedly, Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian will relish the opportunity to match wits with Callahan yet again.

A glance across the depth chart tells you what you need to know about this team. It is young, especially on offense. Most starters are freshmen or sophomores. Callahan’s designated starting quarterback, Danny Roberts, has never played in a college game. The offensive line looks very soft. On defense, the situation is substantially better. Upperclassmen compose the majority of the starting lineup and the few sophomore starters are very talented. This defense is strong, but whether it can match up against the high-flying, loaded offenses of the Pac–12 remains to be seen.

Statistics can always be manipulated, but some numbers do tell us something. Every team in the Pac–12 had at least one player named to the preseason all–conference 1st or 2nd teams – except one. Colorado is seen by the virtually every outside observer to lack the talented needed to compete for a conference title. Conventional wisdom is proven wrong quite often in college football, but this just doesn’t seem like a season where Colorado can realistically aim for anything more than bowl eligibility.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOP STORIES

ALABAMA TO OPEN SEASON AGAINST VIRGINIA TECH
The 1 Alabama Crimson Tide, the reigning back-to-back national champions, are set to open their 2013 campaign against the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta. The Tide are considered by most observers to be the runaway favorites to win their third consecutive national title, which would be head coach Nick Saban’s fourth in Tuscaloosa. Pacing the other sideline will be another iconic coach, Frank Beamer. The longtime head man in Blacksburg specializes in scoring touchdowns through the defense and special teams, and may have some surprises in store for the overwhelmingly favored Crimson Tide.

TOP TEN TEAMS CLASH IN WEEK ONE
The 9 Clemson Tigers host the 5 Georgia Bulldogs in Death Valley this Saturday. Both teams are coming off strong seasons, with each finishing in the Top Ten of last year’s Coaches Poll, and both are expected to contend for their conference championships yet again. A loss to Florida State kept Clemson out of last year’s ACC Championship game, while Georgia narrowly fell to Alabama in the SEC Championship game. The loss – which occurred as the Bulldogs had the game in their grasp – was made excruciating by the fact that the winner was guaranteed a spot in the BCS National Championship Game since Alabama and Georgia were ranked second and third, respectively, in the BCS standings. These two proud programs will begin the season facing a worthy opponent, but only one can come out with the kind of win that can power you through an entire season.

LSU TO FACE TCU IN COWBOYS CLASSIC
This year’s kickoff game in Arlington, Texas will feature two teams who are trying to break through in their respective conferences: the 12 LSU Tigers and the 17 TCU Horned Frogs. The Tigers are looking to reclaim the SEC West after losing out on the division crown to Alabama, who one year earlier avenged a regular season loss to LSU by managing to still make it into the BCS National Championship Game, where they shut the Tigers out 21–0. Meanwhile, TCU managed to finish their first season in the Big 12 with a winning record, but 7–6 won’t cut it this year for Gary Patterson, who has set a high bar for himself after many successful seasons during his time coaching the Frogs. This should be a fascinating matchup that could give significant momentum to the victor.

Predicted Winner: Colorado
Predicted Score: 30–23

This Saturday, the Colorado Buffaloes begin a new era. Coach Jeff Callahan has instilled a new sense of confidence in a program which has been downtrodden as of late, but now is when we will see if his players are buying what he is selling them. Matched up against the Buffs in Denver are their in-state rivals, the Colorado State Rams, led by second-year head coach Jim McElwain. The Rams, too, are looking to prove a point a year after going 4–8.

Last year’s game was close, with the Rams winning 22–17. That win came largely on the back of running back Reggie Moore, who returns this year as a Preseason 2nd Team All-Mountain West honoree. Expect McElwain to put a good chunk of the load on Moore’s back, especially with capable center Xavier Chavis – also a preseason honoree – blocking for him. The Rams boast some experience on defense as well, with two seniors – defensive end Bobby Gibson and cornerback Will Kramer – leading the way.

But the Buffs have players on defense too. Expect Callahan and defensive coordinator Alvin Gresham to have players like senior defensive end Reggie Tolbert ready to defend the run and junior cornerback Charles Hall in the secondary prepared for the passing attack. Offensively, there are serious question marks for Colorado heading into this game. Quarterback Danny Roberts has never played in a college game, and sophomore running back David Robinson – the likely starter – doesn’t have a much longer track record. Roberts is aided by a few talented receivers, but both he and Robinson will be relying on an offensive line full of players who haven’t given much reason for confidence.

Because the Buffaloes are more talented – at least on paper – and because the wildcard nature of a new coach’s debut game makes preparation more difficult, expect Colorado to narrowly win this game. However, be prepared for a slugfest as you witness two coaches and two teams trying to prove their mettle.

Nick Singleton rushes into the end zone for the final go-ahead TD

The Colorado Buffaloes started their season (and new era) off with a win over Colorado State on Saturday, edging their in-state rivals in an offensive explosion. The Buffs registered 626 yards of total offense, quite a showing for a group that had not inspired a lot of confidence in the offseason. Their attack was balanced, with both quarterback Danny Roberts and running back David Robinson, who was Player of the Game, having their time to shine.

The game started very well for Colorado. The Buffs marched down the field on their first drive, with Roberts completing 7 of his first 8 passes and finally running it in for the score. On Colorado State’s first possession, sophomore cornerback Fred Jamison picked off quarterback Travis Smith. Colorado exploited the opportunity, turning the turnover into a scoring opportunity via a 7-yard Robinson run. However, things began to turn after that. After the teams traded 3-and-outs, Rams running back Reggie Moore’s motor started to run.

There were several costly turnovers between both teams

The Rams gained 457 yards on the Buffaloes, and Moore’s 192 yards were a huge chunk of that. A 38-yard touchdown run got Colorado State back in the game, and by the second quarter, they had the ball again after stopping Colorado in their own territory. The Rams scored, stopped the Buffs in their own territory again, and then scored again – this time through the air, putting them up 21–14. Colorado then moved the ball almost the entire length of the field before Roberts threw his only pick of the day, missing his man in the end zone for what could have been the game-tying touchdown. Not to be outdone, however, senior Buffao safety Jared Butler notched a pick of his own, giving his offense a chance to tie it up before halftime, which they did via another Robinson rushing touchdown. The game was tied 21–21 at the half.

Both teams started the second half sloppy on offense, with the Rams getting the ball on the kickoff and earning a 3-and-out. The Buffs made their way into Rams territory but failed to convert a 4th down. Colorado State was more successful on their next possession, with kicker Eric Ford landing a 57-yard field goal to go up by 3. Colorado responded with a drive that included three huge third-down conversions and ended with a 16-yard Robinson run to put the Buffs on top 28–24. On the next possession, Colorado State got started with a 36-yard run by Travis Smith, their quarterback. He followed it up with a touchdown pass to Jesse Williams to put the Rams up 31–28.

Both teams had huge days rushing the football

Colorado then moved the ball and threatened to score, but a fumble by Roberts cost the Buffs dearly. The Rams took advantage of the opportunity, marching down the field at lightning speed to go up 38–28 shortly into the fourth quarter. Down by 10, Colorado needed some magic to happen, and it did. The first touchdown was a 24-yard pass from Roberts to receiver Brent Harris that brought the Buffs within a field goal. Then, after stopping the Rams at their own 31-yard line, Colorado stormed down the field with one huge rush after another. Backup running back Nick Singleton was the one who put the team over the top with a 2-yard touchdown run. With one chance to steal a win, Colorado State could not deliver as the Buffalo defense forced them to punt from deep in their own territory.

Neither team was embarrassed in this game. For Colorado, some questions went a long way toward being answered. Roberts’ 26-37, 339 yard passing performance and Robinson’s 33 attempts and 204 yards with 3 rushing touchdowns were good signs for the team moving forward. However, the defense – thought to be more experienced and talented than the offense – was not nearly as good as advertised. While overall they ended up making the big plays they needed to win the game, they were gashed for most of the game. The exception here is of course Jared Butler, who registered two interceptions.

Regardless, head coach Jeff Callahan was a happy man. “This wasn’t a perfect game, no game is. But to come back from a 10-point deficit and win a rivalry game is a hell of a way for these guys to start the season.”
