Illini Storm Back in the 4th to Steal One from the Knights
McLaughlin's Game Winner as time expired was right through the uprights

Back in Champaign for the Big Ten opener and what a wild ride it was. The game started out very slow both teams using a heavy run attack throughout the game. The Illini started it off with a field goal on their first drive. Rutgers moved their way down field with a heavy running attack before finishing off their drive with a 1 yard TD pass from Rescigno to Grant in the back of the endzone. After that it was a rough one to watch.

Rescigno made this jump pass to the back of the endzone look easy

Chayce Crouch couldn't complete a pass to save his life. The once heisman hopeful had fallen off against the tight Rutgers defense. He went just 5/20 in the first half including throwing his first interception of the year. On the Rutgers side it wasn't much better. Rescigno couldn't move the ball much better but the Knights managed to score two field goals. The score at halftime was 13-3.

Blessuan Austin is blessed with the first INT of Crouch's season

The second half started the same way the first ended with a Rutgers drive and field goal putting the score at 16-3. Coach Lovie gave Chayce Crouch another chance to quarterback the team in the second half. Relying heavily on the run, Crouch was able to finally get going completing passes and toss a 15 yard pass to Palmer with a little less than three minutes left in the 3rd. Back in forth the defensive titans would go forcing three and outs until early in the 4th.

Palmer tiptoed his way into the endzone

The fourth started off with a Rutgers field goal putting them up 19-10. Coach Lovie put his faith and the ball into the hands of Crouch. After a tough three and out. Patrick Nelson got an interception to give the Illini a chance late and Crouch would help them drive down the field and throw a 19 yard pass to Turner for the touchdown with 3:22 left on the clock. But then the Rutgers would drive down the field and be knocking on the door when Rescigno would throw a pass across the middle into the endzone and it was...PICKED OFF...by Nelson again! It went through the hands of the receiver and into Nelson's. This is the Illini's chance. Crouch drove down the field and into field goal range. The three headed monster running attack of Foster, Corbin, and Brown would put them into position and run down the clock to 0:03 left. Rutgers would try to ice McLaughlin. But it wasn't enough. McLaughlin would put the 35 yarder through the uprights and the Illini had did it! They stormed back and won 20-19. What a win headed into their game against 3-0 Minnesota.

The second of Nelson's INTs

Game Notes
A top offense against a top defense. Two early undefeated teams in the Big Ten battling it out. The Illini pulled out a close one against Rutgers to open Big Ten play and Minnesota have pretty much dominated their non-conference opponents. Can the Illini run through the Gopher defense? Or will Minnesota shut them down?

Herbstreit Advantage: Illinois

Re: Hail to the Chief | Illinois Fighting Illini Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Illini Do It Again!
Carmoni Green was one of the lone bright spots for the Illini

Battle of two undefeated Big Ten teams in Champaign. Nothing could be bigger for a week 4 matchup. This game was very back and forth neither defense had an answer. The Gophers would have more stops on the Illini but Illinois would have the more important stops. The game started out with both teams making rushing TDs to make it 7-7 early. Minnesota would drive down the field again and score another rushing TD before making another defensive stop and start a drive down field.

Kendrick Foster's early TD run

Illinois would finally hold the Gophers to a field goal and respond with a quick drive and TD pass from Crouch to Green. But the Illini would continue having trouble stopping the Gophers as they would drive down and score again with 2 minutes left. The Illini would be able to drive down and respond with a TD of their own before half to keep the score close 24-21.

Demry Croft ran all over the Illini

To open the half things were going well for the Illini they had the Gophers pinned deep in their own territory on a third and long play. And then a blown coverage left Holland Jr. wide open for an 86 yard TD pass from Croft. It wouldn't be until the end of the quarter when Illinois finally responded with a short 2 yard TD pass from Crouch to Turner to Make 31-28.

Blown coverage led to this 86 yard TD

Croft broke a tackle from the defensive lineman on a 3rd down play to run in for a score to start off the fourth quarter. Crouch would respond with a rushing TD of his own. Illinois seemed to be one step behind the whole game. It was 38-35 with less than four minutes left when Illinois finally gave themselves a chance. Deep in their own territory Minnesota tried running the ball out of their own endzone when Smith was taken down for a safety by Crawford Jr. Illinois was now only down one and got the ball back. And Illinois started driving putting themselves in scoring territory when Crouch found Smalling across the middle and he fumbled! With a little over a minute left it was Minnesota's ball. Luckily the Illini still had all three timeouts and were able to force a three and out. Register would make a catch before stepping out of bounds too soon and forcing them to punt. The punt went to about the Illini 35 on the left side and Mays MUFFED IT! But he was able to recover and run it toward the middle of the field close to midfield. The Illini had 45 seconds to get in field goal range. Still down 38-37. Crouch would find Griffin Palmer down the middle of the field on a 3rd down and long play to keep the drive alive and they would run up and spike it with 10 seconds left. McLaughlin, from 40 yards out, would hit it right through the uprights and send the Illini into the bye week with a perfect 4-0 record.

Poor tackling was a problem for the Illini all day

Game Notes
The top team in the Big Ten West facing the bottom team in the West. Illinois has won 2 straight games by a last second field goal and is coming off of a bye week. Nebraska is coming off of a 25 point win over a mediocre Indiana team and has only allowed 16 total points in their wins. Can the Nebraska defense play a winning game? Or will the explosive Illinois offense scorch them?

Herbstreit Advantage: Illinois

Re: Hail to the Chief | Illinois Fighting Illini Dynasty (NCAA 14)

You're off to a fantastic start to the season...long way to go though still. I'm intrigued to see what you can do with the powerhouse Big 10 teams later in the season. These box scores for Crouch look more and more impressive with each passing week too.

Yeah i've been really surprised by this season but the last 5 or 6 conference games are gonna be tough and if Western Ky's offense explodes on us like they can in real life (right now i have the worst ranked passing defense) we could be in trouble. Luckily only a couple more wins for bowl eligibility and thats all i expected out of this year.

Illini's Win Over Nebraska Help Them Crack Top 25
The only one of Palmer's catches was a big one in traffic

Malik Turner comes up with the touchdown catch

Watkins first quarter INT unfortunately didn't turn into any points

Dunlap has been underwhelming as the #1 CB this year, overrunning this ball leading to Morgan Jrs long TD

James Jr. got this INT to seal the victory

Game Notes
The Illini are coming off of a dominant victory over Nebraska and where Kendrick Foster ran all over the defense. Iowa is coming off of a 20-13 victory over Michigan State where the defense led. Can Iowa's defense stop Illinois on their 5 game winning streak? Or will Illinois continue their reclaimed glory?

Herbstreit Advantage: Illinois

So what I do is put all this in a word document and then copy and paste it over. Somehow I lost all my write up and the most of the boxscore for this game so the stats aren't there and honestly I was just too lazy to do it all again. Sorry guys!

Re: Hail to the Chief | Illinois Fighting Illini Dynasty (NCAA 14)

I'm sorry guys, my capture card is completely shot now. And idk if the EA Sports Photo Highlights thing isn't around anymore but I can't find it for the life of me. So these next 4 games will not have pictures. Only short write ups and the box scores.
