RETURNING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS USC LEAD THE WAY IN 2005
USC will looks to repeat in 2005, but can the nations Heisman favourite really make it three in a row?
USC finished last season atop the college football world after beating Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl to retain the National Championship. The Trojans have a strong chance to end this season in the same spot and lift their third National title in a row. That's the best explanation for why the USC is No. 1 in our preseason rankings. Coach Pete Carroll's crew will face plenty of competition, though, starting with SEC powerhouse, No. 2 Tennessee, then there is a Big Ten heavyweight on the rise (No. 3 Iowa) and a familiar Big 12 face in No. 4 Oklahoma and to close out the top five is ACC foe Florida State.
All of those teams look like safe bets to factor into the National Title conversation, but the national pecking order is less clear after that. Will Texas (No. 6) emerge from the Big 12 to make another appearance in the national championship? Can LSU (No. 9) reload and make a real run at it?
There are more questions than answers right now, but don't worry: The start of the season is just a few weeks away.
Going into the 2005 season, the USC trojans are the odds on favourite to threepeat, and it isn't even close. Heisman winner Matt Leinart passed up a chance to be this year's number one pick in the NFL Draft to make a run at another title and another Heisman. Both sides of the ball lost three starters, but with a team this loaded, they likely won't be missed. This team boasts a Heisman winner, a Heisman candidate and the top receiving corps in the country. If their defense has an off night, then they will just outscore you. Reggie Bush is the key to this high powered offense. He can beat you on the ground, through the air and probably on defense if they would let him play it. The Pac-10 will be stronger this year, and the Trojans may have to squeek out a few wins, but aside from their showdown at Arizona State, they should go undefeated again.
This season's "Quarterback U" has an ineresting predicament. Will it be veteran Rick Clausen, or the one two punch of Eric Ainge and Brent Schaeffer? Ainge is the favourite because of his play last year and Schaeffer's recent suspension. Gearld Riggs performance in the SEC Championship Game may have won him a starting tailback job, but don't tell that to redshirt freshman Arian Foster. The biggest loss for the Vols will be All-American punter Dustin Colquitt. His younger brother Britton will try to provide the field position advantage and carry on the legacy. The defense returns a complete linebacking core and a backfield with all-SEC safety Jason Allen. Games at Florida and at LSU may be too much for this team to reach the title game.
A team that was once famous for its Kirk Ferentz built defense will now have to lean on its offense. Last year the running game caught the injury bug and star quarterback Drew Tate was forced to carry the team. This year with a healthy running game, TAte should put up Heisman numbers. The loss of defensive end Matt Roth and defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux will hurt an already deteriorated defense. Lost players from last year's defense accounted for 22 of 30 sacks and 55 tackles for a loss. The secondary got burnt one too many times last year and forcing Tate into shootouts. The Hawkeyes have one game in mind, September 24 at Ohio St. If they can win that game then they will have the right momentum for the rest of the season leading into a possible conference championship.
Another quarterback controversy. Who replaces Heisman winner Jason White? And that's not even the biggest problem on offense. The line is all but gone, both receivers and a quarterback. The answer...Adrian Peterson. If there is one man who can carry an entire offense on his back it's him. The defense will rebound like they always do, even with the loss of co-coordinators Mike Stoops and Bo Pelini and seven starters. Junior linebacker Rufus Alexander is the next in a great line and defensive linemen Dusty Dvoracek and Davin Joseph will be Lombardi Award candidates. The road schedule is weak, except their trip to UCLA (Upset Special?) This should be the year Texas beats the Sooners, but don't ever count out Bob Stoops. Three losses in a down year would be respectable.
This school, which was once a superior offensive machine, is in desperate need of talent at the quarterback position. Wyatt Sexton looks to be the favorite to start, but Xavier Lee and Drew Weatherford have greater upside and brighter futures. Leon Washington returns from an injury plagued season and the wide receiver core has been totally rebuilt starting with blue chip recruit Fred Rouse. The offensive line has a hole, a big hole. Alex Barron created pocket protection that made Chris Rix look good at times. The defense will be one of the nation's best as usual, even with the loss of defensive tackle Travis Johnson. Opening day against Miami at Doak will tell the tale of the 2005 Seminoles. If they get past the Canes, the only thing standing in their way is a battle with the Gators at The Swamp.
2005 Conference Winner Predictions:
-- ACC: Boston College
-- Big XII: Texas
-- Big East: West Virginia
-- Big Ten: Ohio State
-- Conference USA: Tulsa
-- MAC: Bowling Green
-- MWC: TCU
-- Pac-10: USC
-- SEC: Florida
-- Sun Belt: Arkansas State
